Evolution.
They said shitty not awesome
Dude, Where's My Car? is so much better than it had any right to be. And while the main characters are stoners, most of the humor isn't stoner humor. Not that there's anything wrong with stoner humor, but movies that consist entirely of stoner humor tend to drag after a while.
I will die on the hill that Kung fury is peak cinema
I’ve literally never heard a bad word uttered about Kung Fury.
Any movie where the protagonist is offing nazis is a great movie.
Last Action Hero. I know the editing is pretty bad and the rhythm is a bit messed up in the last part but it's the most meta movie ever and an homage/parody to classic action movies. Having Arnold play the main part is the cherry on top.
True lies was a better executed tongue-in-cheek send up of the action movie genre, but Last Action Hero is a good and interesting movie.
True Lies is a fantastic movie, doesn't belong on this thread at all!
Rubber baby buggie bumpers!
Where I live, this is being aired on TV on Christmas every year, as a tradition.
Rubber. An anthropomorphic car tire. If that doesn't describe a masterclass in directing I don't know what does.
I own this one! An homage to the no reason.
Rubber is fucking brilliant!
It's pretty rare that I haven't heard of a movie, but this is only the second time I've heard of this movie, and the first time was on reddit yesterday. Was that you?
I definitely wasn't commenting on Reddit yesterday lol. Refugee here.
I'm not going to call Rubber one of the best undiscovered indie flicks out there, but is IS an experience every movie fan should have. The storytelling is unlike any movie you've seen. The fact that you understand the emotional motivation of a friggin car tire is unreal.
The cable guy. Scary Jim Carey is scary. And the ending was visionary.
I blame the marketing for that movie not doing well. People went expecting a "wacky Jim Carrey flick" and what they got was a surreal and frightening thriller.
Eddie Murphy's "Holy Man" suffers that bad marketing issue as well. They plastered so many ads making it out to be a loony Eddie Murphy film and the movie itself is more of an uplifting drama about believing in one's self and not seeking external validation, with a few gags in it making fun of television shopping networks and the stupid shit people buy from them cause yeah, it's Eddie Murphy of course they're gonna have fun with it. But that's only like 1/3rd of the film.
Tremors 2 is peak cinema IMHO. I only wish they had spent a little more on the CGI, or replaced it all with practical effects.
I think Tremors 1 just edges 2 out as the better film, but Tremors 2 is very, very good. I wouldn't change a thing about it, it's an example of a truly well-done sequel.
My biggest disappointment with Tremors 2 was it was direct to VHS, and the movie deserved better.
Came here to mention tremors. It's my favorite cheesy 90s scifi.
All four of the OG Tremors movies kick ass.
Killer Klowns From Outer Space needs no defending. It's just a terrible great time.
It’s worth it for the theme alone!
Absolutely masterful movie! Soundtrack is (big)tops too!!!
The Last Starfighter is not a shitty movie. Now go back to sleep, Louis, before I tell ma about your Playboys.
Wait, people think it is?
How do... YOU do?
Big Trouble in Little China
Not shitty. An absolute classic. One of Carpenter's finest.
it's so much fun watching Kurt Russell clueless-white-guy-ing his way through the plot thinking he's the hero when he's the sidekick.
People don't like this? Come on, a classic
Void, yes; absolute perfection.
I never liked those quilting bees or the bingo parlours. I wanted to live life to the extreme.
—-
The sound track and voice acting punched well above the movie’s aesthetics.
Treasure Planet. There's weird plot choices, but I loved the mixed animation, the music, the characters.
An actually bad but amazing movie would be Miami Connection. Karate rock band sings about friendship fights motorcycle drug ninjas. Fuck yeah bro.
treasure planet is a criminally underrated masterpiece of a film with a great deal of heart put into it that i would never for an instant consider describing as "shitty".
Yeah I don't really think it's shitty, but it completely tanked at the box office. Like, Disney cancelled plans for sequels and a theme park ride kind of tanked.
Kung pow enter the fist. Screw what the critics and rotten tomatoes score says. The movie is goated!

No war but class war.
Gutter is a tool!
Can you blow me where the pampers is?
It's like.... if you're nice to them... they bring you things?
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and/or Time Bandits.
Anything Terry Gilliam is great
Gilliam was almost picked to direct the Harry Potter movies.
Well duh.
If I were the Supreme Being, I would have started with LASERS! Eight o'clock, DAY ONE!
David Warner is good in literally anything though.
Chronicles of Riddick. Not sure it's considered a "bad" movie, but I definitely like it more than most. Just a crazy entertaining world and system they build in a short 2 hour long movie.
BIODOME
Purple sticky punch
How’d you know what I’m doing right now!?
Iron man, iron man, does whatever an iron can
Stop! That's Spiderman.
What are you some kind of rocket scientist or something?
Well, yeah
Flight of the Navigator
Ehem, Flight of the Navigator is neither little nor shitty.
He failed geography. That's a pretty shit navigator......
How dare you. Flight of the Navigator is a masterpiece.
He failed geography. That's a pretty shit navigator....
I unironically enjoy the old 2005 Fantastic 4 movie. It was cheesy as fuck, I don't deny that. But it was fun. And the comics themselves can be as bad or worse sometimes.
Also I like Julian McMahon.
Also also, Chris Evans towel scene.
I unironically enjoy the old 2005 Fantastic 4 movie. It was cheesy as fuck, I don't deny that.
I hated it when it came out, because all super hero movies were cheesy as fuck, and it felt bad seeing another.
But in hindsight, Fantastic Four movies are better when they're cheesy as fuck, because so was/is the comic (more often than not).
My only remaining complaint is that the sequel was too chickenshit to give Galactus a giant purple fork hat. I noticed happily that the shadow of the fork hat made it into the trailer, for the new movie.
Now imagine that.... but all over
I’ve always enjoyed them, but my one complaint specifically for the first one is that everything feels SO MUCH like a set. Every exterior city scene feels like an SNL sketch
I unironically love Armageddon and The Core. Yes, they're both stupid and unrealistic movies, but that works in their favor about as often as against. Something about the way they play with the core concepts makes me love them.
+1 for The Core, seeing Rat’s antics in that movie sparked my passion for computers that blossomed into a tech career
I'm just here for Core support.
Armageddon > Deep Impact
I remember the audio commentary on The Core, where the director acted like the movie was very serious. I loved that.
I DON'T WANNA CLOSE MY EYES
Heh. Core concepts. That one hits deep.
Hudson Hawk. Criminally underrated.
Mine's gotta be "The Brothers Grimm" starring Matt Damon and Heath Ledger. It's the same camp vibe as the "Van Helsing" movie starring Hugh Jackman, but there's no badass super hero to save the day - there's just a bunch of imperfect people trying their best, and it's almost entirely by luck or destiny that they snatch victory from the clutches of defeat. It's also one of the most morbid depictions of childish horror i've seen on-screen, where it gives no fucks about being realistic.
Dredd (2012) is a near perfect 80s/90's style, over the top action movie made 25 years too late.
Well shot action scenes.
Excellent soundtrack.
Pretty darn well paced.
Good helping of action hero one liners.
Plot is simple enough for idiot, explosion go boom, brain to follow, but also takes itself seriously enough to present the horrors of its world via interactions with minor characters.
Karl Urban manages to do more acting with only his mouth and chin, and line delivery, than many other actors do with their whole face.
Olivia Thirlby is also very, very good, I do not understand why some other director has not cast her in an action oriented role since... now that Nintendo seems to actually allow their IP in films: Make her blonde again and she is Samus Aran.
EDIT:
In case you haven't seen it... this is a bit spoilery, but here's a decent 4 minute representative sample to give you an impression of the movie.
“Who Framed Roger Rabbit”.
An absolute masterpiece in terms of blending and transitioning between live action and animation; plus the whole Disney/Warner Bros character crossovers.. just 👌🏼
This won three Oscars my guy. Far from shitty.
But that’s not a shitty movie
Death to Smoochy
This is a fantastic movie, and not in a "it's so bad it's good" way. Great writing, hilarious acting, phenomenal cast.... It's just underappreciated.
Psychotic Robin Williams
He was magnificent
I love this fucking movie and noone else understands why, it's nearly perfect. Even John Stewart is there with truly terrible acting.
Titan A.E. Is a masterpiece.
Buckaroo Banzai
upvote for Mr John Bigbooty
Big-booTAY
That theme song is a legit banger. And my god the quotes... "No, no, no, don't tug on that. You never know what it might be attached to." or "It drives like a truck." "Good. What is a truck?" or "I've been ionized but I'm ok now." or my favorite "DAMN JOHN WHORFIN AND THE HORSE HE RODE IN ON!"
Reign of Fire.
Who said this movie is bad? That's the hill on which there is dying.
Six String Samurai. It's not good. But it's soooo quotable!
Nice shoes. Nice shoes to DIE in!
Holy crap. I haven't thought about that movie in 20 years.
Have this movie on the to watch list,my other half is not so interested
Okay, I've got one that no one has mentioned.
Without clicking the link, just imagine what it might be.
Crank."5mls? no 0.5mls! Elevator explodes"
Peak ADHD movie
The first one was a masterpiece. The sequel was horrible.
I loved them both so much. Super self-aware movies. Best action movies ever.
Agree, left a real sour taste.
The Core. The perfect dumb movie that's fun to watch.
I thought for sure no one else was gonna say The Core, get out of my head!
Hot Rod! I can quote pretty much the whole movie. It’s such a fun ride.
Dude Hot Rod is cool beans! In fact it's legit. Maybe even too legit. To legit to quit. I think it's pretty popular; could be wrong though.
Damn, you could be the next Douglas Bubbletrousers
I'd watch it for the Europe-heavy soundtrack alone, but the film is a damned masterpiece.
Ice Pirates (1984): A bunch of A-Listers before they were big. Great practical effects. Spaceships, Pirates, Time Travel, 'robots' It was magnificent.
Close second: The Cat from Outer Space (1978). It was a Disney flick, but really great for the time.
I absolutely fucking love how in pretty much the entire 3rd act you can tell the whole cast is having fun and barely trying to stay serious even in the takes that made the final cut.
But you want to know the kicker? It’s not even my favorite Stewart Raffill movie. But it is part of his holy trinity for me.
I can't wait to watch Ice Pirates. Thank you.
Cat from outer space! One of my favs. Star studded cast too.
Lost in Space
This is a perfect example for this thread.
So much of that film officially cannot work:
The pacing is frantic and weird.
It relies on familiarity with the source show while being stand-alone and released too late. (Well, maybe it realizes that "Swiss Family Robinson in space" isn't rocket science.)
Various wild science fiction elements are slammed together, some very late with little foreshadowing.
But - the cast carries it off (particularly Garry Oldman and Lacey Chabert).
I have the hardest time explaining why anyone should watch it, but it's solidly enterainting, and all the bits that shouldn't work still somehow work.
Office Space all day
Mortal Engines!
Elrond commanding motorized london for the win
I’ve never watched the movie but I’ve probably seen most of the big action moments in clips on YouTube lol
I'm going to get impaled for this but The Rise of Skywalker. It's my guilty pleasure.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi for me. I don't remember details, but I remember liking it and thinking it was nice to bring original things to the saga (especially because episode VII was almost a tribute to episode IV). Then fans complained and they reverted a lot of themes and things 💔.
TLJ is easily the best non-OT Star Wars movie.
Most of the whining about it is either shit people made up (Luke drinking milk directly from the alien's udder and smiling erotically into the camera*), shit they didn't take two seconds to even try to understand (like how the "Mary Poppins" effect is actually a realistic portrayal of how things move in zero-G vacuum, or how humans don't just explode in space like they do in shitty B-movies**), or criticisms that could be equally leveled at basically any Star Wars movie (weird pacing, minor plot holes, inconsistent "rule of cool" logic for tech and magic).
Once the typical reactionary fanboy-didn't-get-exactly-what-he-expected dies down I think it'll be recognized as one of the franchise's higher points. TLJ's worst sin is being situated between two JJ Abrams hack jobs.
*no I'm not making this up someone unironically described it to me this way with a straight face.
**not making this up either, people i've talked to legit seem to think one atmo of negative pressure turns the human body into a meat bomb or something.
I'm so sorry for you
The 90% of star wars fans who didn't like it need your sympathy more urgently. Thanks, though?
hot take, almost all of the star wars movies and shows are objectively pretty damn shitty, RoS is just the newest bad movie in a series with far more misses than hits.
why are you high horsing over someone liking a bad movie, from a series of mostly bad movies, in a thread about liking bad movies?
upvote for actually understanding the prompt and naming a shitty movie.
My dad pulled me out of school just to wait in line for Phantom Menace tickets. I thought the prequels, while enjoyable, were the last time I would be disappointed by Star Wars.
I was so fucking wrong holy shit.
i don't bother myself keeping up with what's "canon" anymore because nearly every screenplay addition to the canon since the OT has been hella stupid, and most of the time retroactively makes the existing story worse. disney's starting to ramp it up to kingdom hearts levels of convolution and pointless tie-ins that go nowhere but inexplicably contain huge plot points because... money i guess?
the OT is great but star wars as a franchise is generally fucking awful with some good bits here and there.
lmfao
Robot Jox
Hudson Hawk
Hudson Hawk is just great. Everyone else is wrong.
It's one of my most favorite movies to quote. And of course no one ever gets the references, which is even better somehow.
My cat is named Courtney and I'm fond of telling her "Stop it, Courtney, you're embarrassing your country!"
I know Richard E Grant fucking hates that movie but I don't care, he is iconic in it.
Bunny. Ball ball.
1-900 hotdog just did a robot jox ep recently you might enjoy
Kung Pow
George and the Christmas Star
Kung Pow
I, I, I, I, weweeuuuwuuu wuuuuu wuwuwowu hehehewuwuwuwoooo
The whole movie is masterfully stupid, and I would argue ahead of its time. If it came out in the late 2010s/2020s would have been a ton more popular with the GenZs "lol so random" humor
Kung Pow is one of the funniest movies ever made.
But is picking a movie that is trying to be shitty actually fair?
Kung Pow is one of the rare few movies to do the whole "we're intentionally making a campy, so-bad-it's-good movie" and actually succeed in emulating that aesthetic and also making something enjoyable to watch.
Kung Pow is the world's best example of a transformative work. It took some obscure kung fu film, and fucked it up in all the right ways.
What do you get when you cross an owl and a bungee cord?
Myy asss!
Kung pow is one of the least funny and most miserable times I've had watching a movie ever. Congrats you found something actually horribly shitty to defend.
Wild Wild West baby! You know, the movie Will Smith turned down being Neo in The Matrix for lol
Office Space.
The faculty? Oh that's a good one.
2012
i think the 1998 movie launched me into puberty.
I had a crush on Jordana Brewster after that movie. I love that movie.
I've also been keeping an eye on Josh Harnett and he kinda disappeared off the face of the Earth and then started in a few random flicks again all of a sudden.
Superman 3 beats almost ANY action movie out there. It literally has everything you could want in a movie... it doesn't take itself too seriously so it's funny as hell, has actual character development unlike anything we've seen before or since in an superhero movie, cool but believable fight scenes, morally grey characters, and RICHARD PRYOR.
If you'll notice the arterial nature of the blood coming from the hole in my head, you can assume that we're all having a real lousy day.
Velocipastor and Alien vs. Predator
Star Trek IV: The Journey Home is way the hell better than any movie with "IV" in its title has any right to be.
Not a movie, but Konosuba. Yeah, the show is trash, but it's my trash. I will ride Aqua until the day I die
I would also like to ride Aqua until the day I die
It's way funnier than it has any right to be
It starts out pretty decent but obviously gives in to the fan service demons
One I love and haven't seen mentioned is Equalibrium, I've probably seen it 5 times, which is a lot of times for me. I see its ham fisted metaphors and raise you gun karate.
Chocolate. Taiwanese movie about an autistic girl who goes around beating up gangsters in the styles of famous martial artists she saw on TV, followed by her repeatedly demanding they give her an unspecified amount of money.
Once Bitten, Joe vs the Volcano, and Mortal Kombat are all way better movies than they should have been.
There's a movie called Unstoppable (2010) with Denzel Washington, Chris Pine and Rosario Dawson. It's about a runaway train causing trouble in Pennsylvania.
I've watched it no less than 30 times.
It's not like I'm into trains or anything. I just think it's a really good movie and every single actor in it is giving 100%.
Violent Night, for 90's kids who thought Home Alone went harder and want the same high from back in the day
Half the reason I love Drop Dead Fred so much is because my wife hates it so much.
Cobwebs
Buddy of mine grew up on it and loves it, so we watched it. No idea what the fuck I watched lol weird movie
No disagreement here! I watched it a few times as a kid. I probably would feel similarly to how my wife does if I had first seen it as an adult.
That Aged Great (YouTube channel) does a two part video on that one. It's fantastic.
My mother used to call me a mean name and tell me she was quoting the movie. She thought it was funny. I've never seen that movie, but I don't like it.
That's plausible (lots of mean names are bandied about in the movie) and your reaction is understandable. I'm sorry for bringing up the memory.
Surf Ninjas
Must Die
I don't think I've ever run into anyone else who has seen or remembers surf ninjas. What a great fever dream of a movie.
DarkStar
So stupid, but if I see it pop up on any of the streaming sites, I know what I'm doing for the next hour or so.
The need for speed movie. It's not bad. I feel like the game they chose to reference is the worst and best choice for it.
My wife's family loves The Princess Bride, but I love telling them that Stardust is better. It might not be correct, but it's a pretty fun hill to die on.
Battlefield Earth
Like many such movies, it's damn awesome if you don't take it seriously. Fuckin hilarious movie.
When YOU were still learning to SPELL YOUR NAME...
Omg, i ‘member! If there was ever a case for separating the art from the artist….
Interstate 60 - a cute quirky B movie with some hella famous actors. Gary Oldman, Christopher Lloyd, Michael J Fox, James Maraden, Chris Cooper, Amy Smart, Kurt Russell. It is a fun and imaginative ride along a made up highway. My favorite scene was the town of Morelaw.
Big Trouble - a great movie shut down by circumstance. It was set for release in late 2001, the end of the movie involves hijacking a plane with a nuclear bomb, but then 9/11 happened so they sent it straight to video and stopped advertising it. Based on a Dave Barry novel, it’s a hilarious story involving a crazy cast of characters you may meet in Florida. Another star studded cast including Tim Allen, The Tooch, Martha Stewart, Janine Garofalo, Zoey Deschanel, Omar Epps, Jason Lee, Johnny Knoxville, and many more.
I have only met a couple people ever who have seen either of these movies.
Suburban commando starring early 90s Hulk Hogan, best enjoyed on the original VHS .
Bonus Points for the Undertaker’s (uncredited?) cameo appearance: you’re a dead man, Ramsey!
…oh, and extra credit for birthing the “I wAs FrOzEn ToDaY!!” meme too!
Drinking anti freeze to resist being sprayed with liquid nitrogen is peak too.
Also I knew I could never be an actor when I tried to do the line "you gotta leave. Now." in the same intonation as Chris Lloyd but couldn't.
Eurotrip ..."Scotty doesn't know.."
Das Millionenspiel.
It's The Running Man except twelve years earlier and a media satire instead of an action movie. It comments on TV phenomena that wouldn't exist in Germany until two decades later (like scripted "reality" TV). Also, it has early appearances of one of Germany's most famous TV hosts (as the show's host, fittingly) and one of Germany's most famous comedians of the 70s to 90s (in a completely serious role, unfittingly). And unlike the Schwarzenegger movie it doesn't construct a dystopian future to introduce public bloodsports but merely gives a terse reference to a "law on active recreation" dated three years after the movie first aired.
To make it even more odd, it's actually a good movie despite being from Germany and made for TV.
That sounds amazing and we can always use more commentary on how media is made and consumed. I particularly enjoyed Network (1976) and Fahrenheit 451 (novel).
Grandma's Boy. If you're a gamer, its a must watch.
Super Mario Bros. No, not the new CGI one, the old live action one. I know I’m not alone in loving this movie, but man is it divisive— those that don’t like it, HATE it, and I think that’s the majority opinion.
I unironically love this movie. It’s not just nostalgia either, though I did watch it as a kid. I also watched the old Zelda cartoon as a kid when it first came out, and I loved it then but I can’t stand it now. No, I’ve watched this movie recently and it still rocks. It’s perfect for what it is, I think.
Hentai Kamen
No, I will not elaborate
Scamper the Penguin.
The Feature Films for Families version, cuz I never saw the original Russian one called Lolo
Wing Commander
Perfect movie.
But I'm biased, because my religion gives me the ability to navigate turbulent wormholes, too. So obviously I found it relatable.
Hackers
Showgirls.
Additionally the VH1 TV edit is even worse. (In a bad way)
But better in a Ms paint kind of way
The version with commentary by David Schmader is wonderful
Oh! I'll have to find it.
I never thought about a commentary track!
Not just one, and DONT GO CALLING The Long Kiss Goodnight SHITTY YOU .. YOU .. MEAN PERSON!
Can I say a film franchise? If so then The Fast and The Furious movies.
Abraham Lincoln vs Zombies. No, not Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, the parody of that film made on the budget of the "plot" portion of a porn flick. I don't know why I like it, but it's some good dumb fun
Year One is fucking hilarious!
Sleepwalkers
Shit wrong movie. Same era. It was about aliens taking over a group of 4 friends.
I Dudditz!
Same era
Over 20 years between them.
Same genre. Both Steven king films.
Loads of classics in this thread, worth bookmarking to revisit later. Let me add one of my own that I haven't seen mentioned:
Babe: Pig in the City (1998) - The first movie I saw in the theater by myself, because nobody could be arsed to come along. In the end I was glad, because I cried so much.
The Golden Child.
I I I I I want the knife...
Please...
I just rewatched Earth Girls are Easy last week and that'd be on my list.
90 minutes of prime Gina Davis in a bikini doesn't hurt either.
I knew a guy who swore that Garbage Pail Kids The Movie was a goddamned masterpiece of cinema.
I can only watch it in 15 minute stints before the nausea takes effect.
The Cat From Outer Space
Mystery Men
Apparently mine is The Long Kiss Goodnight.
I love it. My family hates it.
Good movie. I reference the "Chefs do that." line a whole lot. My wife was disappointed when she learned where it came from.
Yessum miss daisy. I be honkin'
Mars Needs Moms, no idea why, I like it against my will. I have a friend that's hyperfixating on The Electric State, which got something like a 14% on Rotten Tomatoes.
I seriously doubt that it would count as 'shitty', but it wasn't very well received and is not widely known either, for me rather a kind of comfort movie I'll defend till the edges of the earth: the Cohen brothers' 'A Serious Man'
That's a great movie, though.
There's a somewhat obscure Robin Williams vehicle called Club Paradise. Critics panned it but it's a favorite in my family, we quote it all the time.
"Mr. Gundy: As the official represenatative of Her Britannic Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Second, I order you to withdraw at once or I shall be forced to shoot you between the eyes with a rather large bullet." -Peter O'Toole
Monty Python and the holy grail
Geostorm! Pacific Rim 2!
RV with Robin Williams came out at a good age for me, I was like 12 so poop jokes and mean spirited jokes that the movie is full of clicked with me.
Moonfall.
Fool’s Gold. It’s so bad, but gets me in the feels.
Unironically a top-5 movie for me. It's bad, but it's also everything I want from a movie.
Do I though?
Empire Records.
I make references from that movie all the time and nobody ever gets it. Doesn't stop me.
Kalo. A low budget horror movie, available on YouTube for free.
The English first Digimon movie. Well, I won't defend it. But I will quote and reference it probably more than any other movie. I think it's been a couple days since I've done that though.
Lady in the Water
It's a fantastic fairy tale.
Starcrash.
The dude playing the emperor was phenomenal, and the effects team were competent as fuck even if the suits couldn't make a damn choice and stick with it. Plus it has the Hoff.
It used to be Bad Santa, then it got rehabilitated somehow.
Ay lav yu.
It's a pretty funny romantic comedy if you ignore the romance.
in regions with extremely long history like in middle east, you will often have old villages that were never documented. Or documeneted like 5 governments ago, lost to breucracy.
Literally the most interesting setting for a movie. A village that doesn't exist on the map. There is one single person with an ID in entire place.
Also comedy is basically some modern people from Colorado having culture shock for a whole hour. It works well.
Like? Yes, defend? Nahhh
Did you know Angels in the Outfield has a 31% on rottentomatoes? I'm scared to watch it again because I remember it as a perfect movie.
I’m just going to drop selections from the Troma catalog in here:
These are objectively shitty movies. Most of these movies are irredeemable; hell, some of them are down right an exercise in poor taste. A lot of it hasn’t aged well, and I’m not talking about the cinematography. I haven’t kept up with Troma in the 21st century, though, so maybe Troma has gotten worse-better or better-worse?
However, I find joy in these movies because they are like a time warp back to New Jersey and New York in the 80s and 90s. They were so low budget and always filmed around New York (except for Toxic Avenger II which somehow was filmed in Japan), that they used a lot of family members of the cast and crew or random locals as extras. It is obvious that a lot of people on screen probably didn’t know they were being filmed (or if they did, didn’t realize what type of movie they were in). There’s bad hair and makeup (but not from the effects department), and thick accents and regionalisms that have faded. There are mainstreets and skylines that don’t exist anymore, or if they do, are wildly different. It is amazing to catch a glimpse of an era that doesn’t exist anymore. This exists in all old movies, but the low-budget realness hits differently.
Most of these movies are trash, but they’re my trash. Apologies to Mr. Kaufman.
The Ice Pirates!
Peak Ron Perlman.
George of the Jungle!
The Adventures Of Baron Munchausen. Peak Gilliam, and always a joy to watch. Wish I could find a higher resolution version.
Nacho Libre. Everything about that movie makes me giggle.
Three O'Clock High
It's like someone set it to make the stereotypical '80s movie. It has surprisingly good cinematography and a soundtrack by Tangerine Dream.
Like most '80s movies, it has some things that have not aged well culturally, so be warned. I don't think it's too egregious, but it's definitely of it's time.
The Big Hit
Dirty Grandpa. The critics who didn't like it should be thrown into a river.
Aubery Plaza legit wanted to fuck Robert De Niro and it shows.
Jackass: Bad Grandpa is better than it deserves to be. They should actually do more like that.
The Ice Pirates is magnificent camp
Bunraku, easily. I don't even like noire movies normally.
Warrior with Tom Hardy.
Bawl my eyes out every time.
Beyond the black rainbow
I see a few I haven't seen. Quite a few I have I also enjoyed.
Fiend Without a Face 1958
Vintage claymation
8 Heads in a Duffel Bag.
David spade and Joe Pesci. Amazing.
Home Alone
McHales Navy, one of my favourite Tim Curry roles.
Hoodwinked!
Dolph as he man
The American Astronaut
Galaxina. Low budget space western comedy. Space cowboy wants to have sex with his robot pilot but they have to order the extra parts for her.
Just Troma in general
I, Frankenstein
CGI filled brainless action with demons and gargoyles fighting a secret war. Aaron Eckhart as Frankenstein is stuck in the middle. The whole thing tries to copy the vibe of Underworld and mostly fails. Somehow I still love watching it. It's just the right kind of bad for me.
Nobody else has even heard of my favorite film.
A Pyromaniac's Love Story
Cypher - 2002
Industrial spy movie that has some strange twists. I just loved the whole feel and atmosphere around the movie.
King Fu Mahjongg, and all the rest of that troops movies.
Hackers. Till the day I die…
They're trashing our rights! TRASHING them!
In the same vein:
Johnny Mnemonic is unironically pretty damn good.
The pacing gets clunky in some spots, production quality is a bit off in some sections... honestly not really worse than say Escape from New York... its honestly overall pretty damn good.
This one deserves its own thread fr. Keanu Reeves worked his ass off to try and pull this together and it works in its cheesy way.
Uhm, but Hackers is not shitty.

Hacker is the best !
I can't like that movie because it was so insulting for the culture at the time. Tacky and stupid. No self respecting 90s technology person respects that movie.
