The issue isn't federation, it's the onboarding and "style" of social media.
Also I don't think there is a Facebook equivalent is there?
If people weren't on Reddit they aren't gonna care about Lemmy. The Facebook crowd need a good alternative before they will migrate.
My queer FB friends have been moving to Bluesky, which is frustrating because I've been on Mastodon for a year. But, whatever. I can deal with two accounts.
As-is, no, but an app with a slick dumbed down interface that all we nerds already here despise and equally slick on-boarding flow that hides all the "technical" details could
yeah, lemme just sit on friendica all by myself because im the only person in my life that knows what any of this is, no one is moving to these that has a large presence on the meta versions
Okay, but if you're Friendica user you can natively interact with ActivityPub services like Lemmy or Mastodon, and there are addons enabled on some instances adding BlueSky and Tumblr as well, so if you know anyone using them, you'll be able to interact with them
Also if you're interested in following people you don't know, there's Friendica directory, so you'll not be alone
Thankfully, mine are too old to ever give a shit about anything on the internet. Sadly, my mother watches fox 24/7... my father doesn't care for any of it at least and also pokes fun at her for watching that garbage. He still thinks Trump is good because, in his views, he made his stock the highest it ever was, and that's all that matters. I'm only grateful we never talk about any of it when they see my kids or on holidays.
