If you are born in a small country, you're stuck in a small geographic area out of a massive world. I mean sure you can travel, but its really hard to permanently move somewhere unless you have special skills or something.
If your country goes through autocratization, you kinda fucked.
I wish the future just have one "Worldwide Schengen".
I mean, right now we have: visas, passports, citizenships, like wtf. So tribalistic...
Nationalists: No! You should sit here! And to make sure that you will stay, we will do everything possible to make sure that you know only the local language used only in this tiny country.
When it comes to immigration in the US I feel the exact same way. As some privileged pasty white guy born here I just couldn’t give a rat’s ass if someone crosses the imaginary line illegally. Sure, if they commit a crime they might have to go to jail — but the way the current regime I mean administration is handling things is way off base.
I bring all this up because I kind of thought most of the left here thought the same way as I did but I’ve seen over the past couple years that even my side of the political aisle is in support of fucking over immigrants too.
We do, but our government has decided in all wisdom to reinstate the border patrol because of Islamophobia. Germany did the same thing earlier, so we're slowly going back to pre-1992 days.
I'm all for free travel across borders, and simpler ways to support legal emigration/change of citizenship. But I'm highly suspicious of any whole-world government. Because even if it's founded in decency and humanitarianism, there will come the inevitable day when it falls into the hands of the corrupt, who will exploit, undermine, and finally countermand all its wholesome measures. And there will be nowhere to run.
As an Irish person that spent summers in USA on a work visa, and loved in the UK for years and no love in Australia, of disagree. I do think less borders would be good, but small countries can offer options of they have agreements with other countries.
Ireland is part of the eu, which automatically opens lots of options, visa free.
Every disadvantage offers opportunity. Living in Lichtenstein, Vatican City or a pacific island state probably has something going for it. Find the advantage and use it.
