I'm sure I've read this headline before and nothing came of it then.
Automattic declined to share a time frame as to when the migration would be complete, given its scale, but a rep for the company called the progress so far “exciting.”
Yeah, they've been talking about this for years now.
I'll believe it when I see it
Why did you link to a Mastodon post and not the actual article?
The article seems well-written, except that:
the fediverse — the open social web powered by the protocol ActivityPub also used by Mastodon, Threads, Flipboard, and others.
Seriously? Flipboard has like one thousand Monthly Active Users and we have like 50 times that, but we're like "and others" lel... I guess they didn't mention Pixelfed either tho and it's a lot "hotter"...
That article is intended for casual readers. These people might be more familiar with Flipboard than Lemmy or Pixelfed.
The same way that people are familiar with Blackberry or Nokia despite none of them even reach mainstream market anymore.
One thing at least is that when you search "Reddit alternatives", most articles that I came across seemed to make out like Lemmy is the best option in terms of amount of users and not being advertised explicitly as a "free speech and censorship free platform", which we all know really means "bigots are welcome here." In fact when I was searching Reddit alternatives, it seemed to me that Lemmy is really the only option.
Wow, way to try staying relevant I guess? They had a huge following and the porn was flowing during the good times. They blew their chance and now it’s a shell of itself. Fuck Tumblr.
of all platforms I didn't expect the hellsite to federate.
They've been recently bought by Automattic (WordPress), so this doesn't surprise me. I wouldn't have expected it if they were still owned by their previous owner though.
We're gonna need a blocking button.
All of you who were making a fuss over Threads had better act the same way about this - after all, it's Verizon.
Verizon sold Tumblr to WordPress in 2019
As long as there's no toxic behaviour from them, I'm more than OK with this
Oh you mean the one run by a conservative who’s a massive bigot? Greaaaaat.
I welcome our colon three posting brothers and sisters

some of us are already here :3
Can anyone eli5?
Will it federate with AP platforms?
It will federate with other AP platforms.
how do you link pixelhub and lemmy to tumblr
Oh hellsite
Tumblr was a lot of fun. Yes it is a microblogging platform, but that doesn't explain what the appeal was. I have no idea what the appeal is today as I left in 2015.
People would share text or image or links of things they liked, and if you reblogged it (shared to your own blog) the comment you added would be retained when someone reblogged your reblog, creating ludicrous chains of conversations that people would build and build on. They eventually became unreadable because they got squashed into one line. There was no way to comment without reblogging.
Tumblr predates influencer culture, and tumblr celebrities were not really a thing (except for pizza by accident being tagged everywhere).
You also had a tag system, where you added hashtags to reblogs that were searchable. This way you would find topics you liked, and blogs to follow. If you followed you would get their reblogs in your home feed.
The blogs had custom CSS, with graphics and music playing but less free for all than MySpace. This made some blogs into minor art pieces, along with the things they reblogged. This was a big part of what made tumblr cool when websites all started going uniform and looking exactly the same.
For me the initial appeal was high def images. Instagram had not taken off, and so finding consistent high quality images of art, nature, sub culture and pop culture imagery or artists, porn etc. was not as obvious as it is today.
I loved tumblr but eventually got bored. Eventually they killed custom CSS and porn, and basically made tumblr worthless for anyone who wasn't into fandoms (/s but kind of not. I have no idea what happens on tumblr today).
You are not alone there
Maybe if they did something about their porn bot problem I'd be happier to see this
There's always the block button.
What an amazing concept right? Being able to personally filter out individually what you don't like.
I will applaud tumblr for having a good block button. But it doesn't solve the porn bot problem.
Please no
Heaven forbid an open protocol see adoption.
I've been on Tumblr since the David Karp days and I'll be there for the rest of my life.
Is it still the same SJW hellhole it was a decade ago?
Lol, people are still using SJW as a snarl world in 2025?
No, the word is DEI now.
I mean, come on people, it's current year, not past year.
@Whateley @FlashMobOfOne now expressing any kind of empathy = "white knighting"
As with the fediverse, there are a lot of user curated blacklists to get rid of the problem children.
Just don't trust shinigamieyes, that shit got taken over by terfs a few years back and now lists a lot of innocent trans bloggers.
Wait, what? That's disappointing. I use Shinigamieyes, haven't noticed anything weird yet.
thebadspace has no real rhyme or reason either and lists a lot of folks I think are fine, and also gives (almost) no reason or receipts.
It really would be so much easier to just boost Mastodon posts into a Lemmy community.
Hopefully whenever mastodon gets quote posts we'll see something similar pop up over here.
You don't need to wait on Mastodon to do it.
Obviously, I'm not talking about you specifically -- Threadiverse devs generally.
For example, some of this functionality already exists on Friendica.
Say, are you saying that it's possible to take an existing Mastodon post, and post it into Lemmy? If so can you pliz point me to someplace that says how to do that? So far I've only seen this guide: https://anonsys.net/display/bf69967c-1467-8270-7e3d-48d984455929 and it only says how to crosspost a new Mastodon post, not an existing Mastodon post.
Right now, you can crosspost to a Friendica group by mentioning the group actor handle (ex:
@fediversenews@venera.social
. And because Friendica supports quoted boosts, you can boost to a Friendica group through this method.Lemmy could easily support this feature.
