Gang violence in Haiti has displaced 300,000 children, the United Nations says

Children are more than half of the nearly 580,000 people who have become homeless in the last four months. The spike in violence began in late February after a series of coordinated attacks on key government infrastructure eventually led Prime Minister Ariel Henry to resign in April.

Gangs now control at least 80% of the capital Port-au-Prince and the key roads leading in and out of it, with more than 2,500 people killed or injured across the country in the first three months of the year, according to the U.N.

hi im new to lemmy, some intro and questions
  • Welcome! Lemmy is organized into topics called "communities" which have different moderators and rules, but overall share a lot of culture and the same users.

Within communities, people can create topical posts and comment on posts or other comments. You can also vote up good content and down poor content, and higher rated content will be shown more prominently. If you're familiar with Reddit, it's a similar organizing principle.

There are lots of great apps that are quite diverse, and on multiple platforms. Be sure to check them out here!

Chinese space firm unintentionally launches its new rocket

The rocket was undergoing a static fire test of the stage, in which a vehicle is clamped to a test stand while its engines are ignited, when the booster broke free. According to a statement from the company, the rocket was not sufficiently clamped down and blasted off from the test stand "due to a structural failure."

Video of the accidental ascent showed the rocket rising several hundred meters into the sky before it crashed explosively into a mountain 1.5 km away from the test site.

Alzheimer’s scientist indicted for allegedly falsifying data in $16M scheme

A federal grand jury has indicted an embattled Alzheimer's researcher for allegedly falsifying data to fraudulently obtain $16 million in federal research funding from the National Institutes of Health for the development of a controversial Alzheimer's drug and diagnostic test.

Hoau-Yan Wang, 67, a medical professor at the City University of New York, was a paid collaborator with the Austin, Texas-based pharmaceutical company Cassava Sciences. Wang's research and publications provided scientific underpinnings for Cassava's Alzheimer's treatment, Simufilam, which is now in Phase III trials.

Effort to withhold Mexico funding over water crisis passes second congressional hurdle

On Friday, the House voted to approve the fiscal year 2025 State, Foreign Operations & Related Programs, or SFOPS, appropriations bill — part of which included first-of-their-kind financial sanctions against Mexico, which is failing to abide by an 80-year-old water sharing treaty with the U.S.

But with the next cycle deadline of October 2025 fast approaching, Mexico has fallen so far behind that its reservoirs no longer contain enough water to meet the deficit.

Ultra-Orthodox protest against order to enlist in Israeli military turns violent in Jerusalem
  • Yes aleph posted links to survey data below that shows most Hareidi Jews do not consider themselves "somewhat" or "very" Zionist. Hence that statement. I was basing my statement on government participation. Hareidi Jews vote at or above national voting rates, and their parties (Shas and UTJ) are members of the governing coalition. Anti-Zionist parties (such as Ra'am) would never be willing to join a ruling coalition.

  • Ultra-Orthodox protest against order to enlist in Israeli military turns violent in Jerusalem
  • Thank you for the links. It seems I missed the mark on that one.

  • Ultra-Orthodox protest against order to enlist in Israeli military turns violent in Jerusalem
  • Your definition of Zionism is almost certainly not what the word means in Israel

  • Ultra-Orthodox protest against order to enlist in Israeli military turns violent in Jerusalem
  • They are a minority in Israel, but powerful because they all vote as a block, so their votes are almost guaranteed.

They believe that their prayer and study provides divine protection to Jews in the land of Israel, so is better than military service. Most Israelis consider that bs and say that they are living for free off of the state.

  • Ultra-Orthodox protest against order to enlist in Israeli military turns violent in Jerusalem
  • Hopefully they leave the government in protest and trigger an early election. They are the only parties left keeping Netanyahu in power. (IE if any one of them left, he would lose the majority)

  • Ultra-Orthodox protest against order to enlist in Israeli military turns violent in Jerusalem
  • The vast majority of Hareidi Jews are Zionist. There are small groups totalling a few thousand who are Anti Zionist but live in Israel.

The Ultra Orthodox majority not only supports the state, but are represented by religious parties in the current government under Netanyahu.

Edit: Survey data shown below shows that although Hareidi Jews in Israel participate in the government, are represented by designated parties, and those parties are members of the current government under Netanyahu, the majority of those same people consider themselves either "not too" Zionist or "not at all" Zionist.

  • Ultra-Orthodox protest against order to enlist in Israeli military turns violent in Jerusalem
  • Its not true however. This is Neturei Karta, a small group of a few hundred members that has been denounced by even other Ultra Orthodox groups such as Satmar. Most ultra Orthodox Jews are Zionist [edit: based their participation in the state], although there is a minority who believe that the State of Israel is illegitimate because only God can create a Jewish State in the Land of Israel.

  • Nevada adds proposed constitutional amendment for abortion rights to 2024 ballot
  • Not every law, but there are some policies that create bad situation when they are illegal in some states but not others. Historical examples are slavery, prohibition, voting rights, marriage equality, and abortion.

Slavery being legal in some states but not others led to the Civil War, prohibition led to mob wars, etc. States still have the power to legislate within the law, but setting federal limits is sometimes necessary so the States can remain United.

  • We don't think about it a lot, but part of the cost of buying groceries is also the cost of garbage service. Everybody has to pay for the disposal of their own waste. For most households, it is a minimal cost, and it may even be so minimal that it's rolled into another expense that you don't even see (included with rent, municipal taxes, etc.).

For manufacturing, however, it's a totally different story. Industry produces huge amounts of waste, and often they don't pay to dispose of it properly. The word "giveaway" is exactly right. We are, paying for their cleanup expenses.

Sonia Sotomayor Is Trying to Warn Us About the Supreme Court’s Dirtiest Open Secret

People care when their drinking water is contaminated with lead. They care if their medicines aren’t safe and effective, or if somebody takes all the money out of their investment accounts. Those things don’t make people happy. Yet it’s administrative agencies that are guarding against that and protecting their rights. So when the Supreme Court starts to dismantle important features of these agencies, it matters because it’s destabilizing a really important part of government

Appeals court seems lost on how Internet Archive harms publishers

In an open letter to publishers, more than 30,000 readers, researchers, and authors begged for access to the books to be restored in the open library, claiming the takedowns dealt "a serious blow to lower-income families, people with disabilities, rural communities, and LGBTQ+ people, among many others," who may not have access to a local library or feel "safe accessing the information they need in public."

During a press briefing following arguments in court Friday, IA founder Brewster Kahle said that "those voices weren't being heard." Judges appeared primarily focused on understanding how IA's digital lending potentially hurts publishers' profits in the ebook licensing market, rather than on how publishers' costly ebook licensing potentially harms readers.

Bolivia coup attempt fails after military assault on presidential palace

Earlier in the day, military units led by General Juan Jose Zuniga, recently stripped of his military command, had gathered in the central Plaza Murillo square, home to the presidential palace and Congress. A Reuters witness saw an armored vehicle ram a door of the presidential palace and soldiers rush in.

Tensions have been building in Bolivia ahead of general elections in 2025, with leftist ex-President Evo Morales planning to run against former ally Arce, creating a major rift in the ruling socialist party and wider political uncertainty.

Many do not want a return of Morales, who governed from 2006-2019 when he was ousted amid widespread protests and replaced by an interim conservative government. Arce then won election in 2020.

Zuniga said recently that Morales should not be able to return as president and threatened to block him if he attempted to, which led Arce to remove Zuniga from his post.
