People doing the 30 days linux Challenge are having several problems because of Mint's old packages and technology. Why people still recommend it when there is Fedora and Opensuse with KDE and Gnome?
  • It usually has something to do with programming. Again, most cases, the versions in the packages included in your garden variety stable distros should cover most use cases.

However, once in a while one would encounter the need of using the cutting edge features on certain compiler or interpreter. Rust comes to mind. I know Python introduced some features that could drastically alter workflow (e.g. switch statement). NodeJS is another one known to be lagging behind from time to time.

In other cases, hardware support might be taken to consideration, especially for newer machines. However, with Mint including the optional newer kernel, it shouldn't be a problem.

  • People doing the 30 days linux Challenge are having several problems because of Mint's old packages and technology. Why people still recommend it when there is Fedora and Opensuse with KDE and Gnome?
  • Because for most use cases, Mint works flawlessly. It changes little from time to time. It has all the drivers to get started with a wide range of common hardware. It has all the codecs to play common media formats.

Of course if the package update is too slow, it's not for you, but then unlike you, most people don't need the latest and greatest. They just need something that works from the get-go with predictable behavior.

  • Could offline physical piracy be good to games?
  • If they come up with some way to make it as hard as possible for the buyers to share these cracked games among them, they could make a lot of money with this.

This kind of thinking is the bane of humanity.

  • I do get where they're coming from with Lua. With luci (the web interface), Lua must be installed as it's a requirement. However, it might be the stripped down version as well (AFAIK). Also, if you know bash & coreutils already, it might be counterproductive to have to learn something new.

I'm just glad that I could help. It's not fun to get stuck in such technical roadblock.

  • [Vent] Please avoid BusyBox
  • Yeah I hear you. While I personally never fell like it's that severe of functional limitations, I am aware on how stripped down busybox is. I'm also aware that some systems lives off 4MiB of flash and 32MiB of memory, so if you ask that question, you might get the answer "yes, it is necessary".

Meanwhile, if you have the luxury to install bash (or other full-featured shell), then that's one option to consider. You seem lime you're familiar with UNIX shell, and Lua is a whole new language. The Lua interpreter that comes by default might be stripped down as well anyway.

  • I got OpenWRT on my home router and I've never had this issue. I guess I just never have that advanced of a use case for its command line.

You're also free to install bash (or other sh) if space allows.

  • XFCE vs LXQt

I'm not trying to start a war here, just wondering what your takes are. They pretty much have the same concept of lightweight desktop, but with different toolkits.

I'm a KDE person myself, but I've had experience with XFCE.

I've tried LXQt in the past but never really gotten into it, perhaps the timing was just not right.

    Note Application

Do we have a default application for Note?

I know it sounds mundane, but we have calculator, sound recorder, music player, even web browser. It just seems a bit strange we don't have a basic plain-text note application.

I usually use Markor. I have no complaint overall except that it would stick out like sore thumb on my front screen due to it not having the themed icon.

Devs & fellow users, what do y'all think?

Show Comment Context (instead of everything)

    Hello devs!

Just a little input from me: when we're showing specific comment (like from profile or from inbox), it would be nicer to be able to show just the parent comment for context, instead of showing the whole thing (only to have the user look for it).

    Quick Home Button

Hi there! Thank you for having this app on F-Droid, and more importantly for creating this app! As a (former) user of Infinity, I'm really grateful to have basically the same app for Lemmy.

I'd like to give a bit of my input. Actually this is a bit of my pet peeve from the old app as well.

Compared to the other apps (e.g. Boost, Jerboa), this one does not provide a homing button (i.e. a clear way to return to top). While the Refresh button in the menu is useful, relying on that is less than ideal. It is awkward at best and confusing at worst.

I'm not sure if the general consensus here would agree (some input here would be appreciated), the general flow on social media app would be to simply press the home button to go to the top of the feed, occasionally swiping down to refresh. This has worked for me not only on Twitter & Instagram, but also on Mastodon apps (both the official app as well as Tusky), the other Reddit apps, as well as other Lemmy apps.

I noticed that the bottom nav bar is identical with the Reddit app. However, the two buttons on the left are redundant as they function exactly the same (due to Lemmy not having the equivalent to multireddit). Could we have the leftmost button as home? I feel like it's the de facto standard these days.

I'd like to know what y'all think!

    Firewire, anyone?

Any Thinkpad user here using their Firewire port? What would you use it for? I read that we can make ad-hoc connection between two computers.

    nouveau driver heat issue, anyone?

Not looking for a solution, really. Ended up installing proprietary nvidia driver because I need the machine for my job. Just wondering if anyone have similar experience.

I have a Thinkpad W530 with K1000M running Linux Mint I am using for work. Was using nvidia driver v390, life was good.

Then came LMDE 6. I was thrilled to have Debian 12 instead of Ubuntu 22.04 as the base, so I decided to take the leap.

Everything went well except for the nouveau driver, which I found to be sub-optimal, particularly with the thermal management.

After the upgrade, the machine became scalding hot especially around the heatsink area. When doing video call, the audio is choppy. It sometimes gets so hot that it restarts itself as I was using it. Almost everytime I leave the laptop on overnight, I'd find the desktop clean even though I left things open, showing it's been restarted.

I've only just installed nvidia-tesla-470-driver, so maybe it's too soon to tell. However, the machine is not scalding hot anymore.

    Anyone had something like this?

    Publishing New Torrents

    Hi all!

I'm working on re-encoding a bunch of TV shows from H264 to H265 as well as making the metadata more uniform (especially between seasons).

As I've completed a couple of shows, I would like to possibly give back to the community by shareing it so that more people could benefit from it.

What would be the best way for this? Since I download most of it from torrent, I am thinking of having it on torrent as well. How to make sure it gets the exposure it needs (i.e. seeding)?

online metadata collection for tv series

I'm just trying to clean up my library of TV series, making my content more uniform. After I was done with the major stuff (resolution, codec, subtitle), I am now into the details.

One of the thing that bugs me is that some of them have chapter times while others don't. I could just remove chapter data from them all, but I want to see if having them is a viable option.

Last time, I had to download the same stuff uploaded by different people in order to extract the metadata. This works, but requires me to download more stuff (they're not small...).

I was wondering if there's like an online library for pirated movie/TV series metadata like we do for subtitles.

    Thanks in advance!
