The problem is that he stacked the Supreme Court; they all knew that the SCOTUS would side with him.
So they didn't challenge the issue with the probable intent of avoiding a supreme court precedent making him completely untouchable.

I'm pretty sure he would still be running for president because imprisonment is not a disqualifyer for candidacy, and that would still be his only shot at a pardon for at least 4 more years.
Would his voting base even care? I have no idea.
They'd be putting themselves in prison to own the libs.
If he was found guilty of participating in an insurrection, then Trump would be constitutionally prohibited from holding any federal office.
