They have really good sales almost all the time, their spices are extremely high quality, and they are politically active as anti-fascist leftists....what's not to love?
Oh, Penzeys has been my spice provider since it opened! Well, my mother's since it opened, and mine since I could cook. That was a bit later.
I do get their emails which are something else. Amazing combo of "Hey these things are on sale also fuck the right". Also sometimes pictures of pets with bandanas.
Wish we had a physical store near us. My mother went to one when traveling and got me some very nice vanilla once.
Their spices are great, and they have some really good blends they've created. Used to live where they had a shop in town, miss being able to go in and browse. Now we just mail order every few months.
Love Penney’s! No physical store nearby, so I put in an order a couple times a year to restock the essentials. Their 4/S seasoned salt is the bomb and makes breakfast potatoes next level. They also always send free little goodie bags of various spice blends in our order that, if I was a more adventurous cook, I’m sure would be awesome.
Thank you for posting this! There is a local spices place I really like, but they have stopped producing almost everything. They're down to a couple of blends.
Is there a go-to herb, spice, or blend from Penzeys you'd recommend for holiday gifts?
The boxed sets are great gifts. The pie and baking boxes are good for the holiday season pastries and whatnot, but the general cooking/grilling box sets are very good gifts for people who do those kinds of cooking. I use a lot of their herbs and the granulated garlic (both roasted and plain), but my favorite blends are Northwoods, Greek, and the Creamy Peppercorn (it's listed as a dressing/dip mix, but I use it as the seasoning for pork chops).
Penzey’s is great. Fantastic selection, great quality, reasonably priced for the quality.
The Chicago steak seasoning is a hilariously flexible “savory smoky spice” go-to, if you like that sort of thing. Its also fantastic on steaks if you can’t be bothered to go through the whole song and dance of sous vide prepping your meat with a bunch of shaved garlic, rosemary, thyme, and various dried spices.
