YSK there are plenty of European alternatives to USA big tech, the GDPR applies to non-Europeans if they are using services offered by companies that are based in the EU
  • Except Lemmy. I wish luck to anyone trying to get rid of their comments when they could have been federated to any number of known and unknown servers throughout pretty much any country in the world. The legal nightmares to get it enforced basically make it a non-starter.

  • GameStop’s CEO celebrated Trump’s victory and stock has been climbing ever since
  • Something isn’t adding up. I bought them in 2021, and the split was in 2022. But the qty it says I bought matches my current number. I’d expect that to be quadrupled . I need to look through my documents to verify

  • D-Link refuses to patch a security flaw on over 60,000 NAS devices — the company instead recommends replacing legacy NAS with newer models
  • you can't really blame the manufacturers for this, either. They can't reasonably continue maintaining software for their products for an indefinite period of time.

Shh, anytime I say this about Windows I get people coming out of the woodwork that say Windows 7 should be supported 15 years later.

  • Did the concept of 9-5 included a 30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks?

You always hear the phase “9 to 5” and also the song with the same name. Assuming you include 1 hour worth of breaks (30 minute lunch and two 15 minute breaks), you’re only working for 7 hours a day which comes up to 35 hours a week.

Now it feels like you have to work 8 hours a day (for a total of 40 hours of actual work), plus your other time off meaning you’re really there for 9 hours each day (for a total of 45 hours). Am i looking at that wrong, or did expected times change, and if so, when?

Anyone having trouble with Zotify and the like?

I know that recently Spotify requires a credentials.json file and not just a user name and password. I can’t seem to find a method though that works in creating that file. I’ve tried librespot and librespot-auth, both of which should expose themselves as a speaker on my network for Spotify to cast too but it doesn’t show up. I’ve tried them both in a WSL instance and compiled directly for Windows with no luck.

Is there another way I’m missing to generate those credentials? I have a valid account, so I know there’s not an issue there.

(Religious) What would i be labeled?

I’m curious if there’s a name to the belief I have. I wouldn’t exactly call it atheist, though i generally lean that way, but I wouldn’t call it non-theist. The thing is, I just plain don’t care if God exists or not. They could, or they couldn’t, it really has no bearing on how I live my life. For that reason along I think I go in the atheist camp, but I always thought that was used to describe people who don’t think he exists.

What causes a CFL to suddenly start working again?

I have a CFL in the bathroom that went out on me. I’ve been too lazy to change it because there are other bulbs that are working. Well after a couple weeks, it magically decided to turn back on. It’s nowhere that it would be jostled or anything, so I found that weird.

WYR: Be Invincible, Immortal or Invulnerable?

Invincible - Live a normal life span, can get hurt, but won’t be killed, still feel things

Immortal - Live forever (stop aging in your mid30s) still capable of being injured and dying via unnatural causes

Invulnerable - Live a normal life span, can’t get hurt or killed, but in return can’t feel anything (emotionally or physically)

Took a little liberty with some of the definitions to provide enough separation for the question.

How do historical parts of active cities end up so far underground?

I was thinking about Rome and there is one place that’s a 17th century church, on top of 14th century monastery on top of a 1st century apartment. And if you go to the Forum section it’s visibly below the surface of the current city.

For the fact that the city has been active for thousands of years, how do things end up getting buried? Does that mean the elevation of the city is higher now than it was in 0 AD?

Prank calls don't really exist anymore with caller ID and everyone sending unknown numbers to voicemail.

I was listening to a Weird Al song about prank calls and realized you can’t really do them anymore now. Also it was funny that he mentioned dialing 7 digit numbers instead of 10

Women of Lemmy, do you mind being called cute?

Or do you prefer other adjectives? Do you consider it to be insulting or do you take it for a compliment if it was meant as one? (Assume an amenable relationship between the two people, not a random stranger or creeper)

Texting has probably enabled more affairs recently

Due to its asynchronous and discreet nature, people don’t have to be in physical proximity or expect immediate responses.

I don't like sleeping in dark rooms

I don’t like to sleep in near pitch black rooms. It just feels unnatural to me. It may be more the fact that it prevents the gradual transition to daylight unless you’re using an artificial light, so that bothers me more because you don’t know when morning is. But even when traveling I love to keep the curtains open through the night and sleep to whatever the natural light level is around me even if it’s in the middle of a city.

    Hidden Photos available via USB

Well this is interesting. I plugged my phone into my computer to pull some photos off of it and I just happen to start browsing it via Windows Explorer since the device shows up there. Imagine my surprise when I saw things that were in my Hidden folder show up clear as day. It seems that lock is only at an application level and just browsing the file system it’s there to see.

Does anyone else experience something similar? Is there a note I missed that it’s still be available via other means?

[Bug] Feed blur settings no longer per account

In previous versions I could set the nsfw blur settings (Settings > Apperance > Blur NSFW) for my feed on a per account basis. This was good for having a nsfw and a sfw account that I could easily switch between. As of 2.12.4, it seems this setting is now global forcing me to have to switch it each time i switch accounts. This can also be problematic if i forget to re-enable the blur when switching back to my sfw account.

See all communities on another instance?

Is there any way to see a list of communities either on the instance you’re subscribed to, or better still a remote instance? I can go to Local and New posts to see what’s been posted, but that’s really about it. Even if there’s a way to see communities of an instance you have an account on, I wouldn’t want to sign up for multiple instances just to get a list on each one, then flip back to my main account to subscribe to them.

Does different parts of the world use different standards for water pressure similar to voltages?

In the US for example the standard is 110V for voltage and 80psi for water. In Europe, voltage is 220V, is water pressure different there too?

Tourists (and tourism) are a good thing.

Quite often you see people saying “tourists need to go home” or “we need less tourists” and there are some valid issues with how people can be, but overall, having tourists is a good thing. It shows that the middle class actually has means of traveling. It also tends to stimulate a local economy with additional revenue and can offset taxes for locals through hotel and other tourism fees. Those that do travel also tend to develop a broader world view then being in their own little sphere.

A reduction in tourism means that only the rich will end up traveling, and everyone else will be stuck only in the place they’re born, relegated mainly to pictures and videos “of a far off land” and will foster deeper divides of “well that’s just them over there” instead of getting to experience it firsthand.

How quickly do changes get pushed to the ActivityPub protocol?

Let’s say I hit submit on a post or reply, and then immediately notice a typo and edit it. Or I accidentally mis-swipe and downvote and then change it to an upvote.

In both cases, do both actions immediately get posted to the feed, or does the Lemmy instance wait a minute and combine (or overwrite) the actions so that only a single action gets published?

People who still wear masks (and aren't immunocompromised)...

How long do you plan on wearing a mask for? Will it be for the rest of your life? What will change your view?

This isn’t meant to be inflammatory. There’s someone at work who wears one everyday and I’m too afraid to ask them.

    Men who shave...

How often do you shave? How long does it take you? How do you do it?

Just curious as it feels like a chore for me. I usually do a with the grain shave with a safety razor and no product since I don’t have a lot of time and that gives the least irritation, but it’s not a close shave. I see guys that get stupid close shaves and I often wonder how much time they spend on it.
