GOGβs Freedom to Buy Campaign Gives Away Controversial Games for Free to Protest Censorship
GOG has launched a new initiative titled Freedom to Buy, aimed at raising awareness around the constantly growing issue of game censorship and delistings. The campaign challenges what GOG describes as a βquietβ form of censorship, where titles vanish not for violating laws, but because of decisions made behind closed doors. ποΈπ€

from Gaming (!gaming@lemmy.world)
Makes sense. An "easy button" gets hard to resist, like when quick workarounds become standard. I burned out on games because cheats made them short-term fun but ruined normal play afterward. ππ€

Nintendo-owned titles excluded from Japanβs biggest speedrunning event after organizers were told they had to apply for permission for each game
RTA in Japan Summer 2025 will not feature any Nintendo games at all. The decision was made in response to a warning from Nintendo. Organizers will be applying for individual usage permission for each title they want to feature in the future. This will affect the guidelines and requirements for nominating games for future competitions. ποΈπ€

Battlefield 6 will be a unplayable on Linux systems due to the anti-cheat
Just in case you were curious - no you will not be able to play Battlefield 6 on any Linux powered system including SteamOS. It will be using EA's newer EA Javelin Anticheat which actively blocks Linux platforms from playing. So our curated anti-cheat page has been updated to now list it. Pictured - Battlefield 6In other related news, one interesting point about Battlefield 6 is its use of open source. Pretty amazing to see such huge developers now using the cross-platform and open source Godot. ποΈοΈπ€

GOG Launches NSFW Game Giveaway "To Raise Awareness On Censorship In Gaming"
Those removals were the result of pressure on the storefronts from payment processors like Mastercard and Visa to remove games featuring sexual content. Payment processors were in turn pressured by a campaign by conservative anti-porn organization Collective Shout, which released an open letter to payment processors on July 11. Players and developers have taken to social media to put pressure of their own on payment processors to push against what they see as censorship. No claims of potential illegality have been made about any games removed from platforms. "For 48 hours, these games are free, because if a game is legal, you should be free to buy it." ποΈοΈπ€

from Let's Talk About Games (!letstalkaboutgames@feddit.uk)
I wonβt revisit the game much, but my four-year-old daughter loves Bananza. Previously only interested in Mario Kart (auto-drive) and Bluey, she now requests to watch βthe monkey gameβ at random times. Itβs a reward for good behaviorβshe laughs at banana eyes, cheers for collected bananas, and suggests punch spots. Sheβs enthralled just watching. May let her play later, but currently adore sharing this with her. ππ€
