  • Decaf beans

  • I only recently discovered them but I’m sorta hooked on them now. I definitely want to try all their offerings. Unfortunately they’re just a bit too far away for me to drive to them, so I have to get them shipped, which is not my preference, but from what I’ve tasted it seems to be worth it. My local grocery store does also sell their beans for about $2 cheaper, but they’re not as fresh usually. I did get lucky once though and found some that were less than two weeks old, but since then everything’s been at least two months old. I do still keep an eye out though every time I get groceries.

  • I’m not as educated as some folks here but in my experience, most places just don’t treat decaf with the same respect as regular, both roasters and cafés. It seems to be a bit of a snowball effect, where people don’t get decaf as much so the café doesn’t have as fresh of decaf beans, which makes people less likely to order them, so they’re even less fresh, and so on and so on, and then that in turn affects people’s perception of decaf, making them less popular to order from roasters, which then don’t prioritize it as much. There seem to be some places that really focus on decaf though, which is great to see. In my experience, most decaf tend to taste notably worse than their regular counterparts. Usually less clarity of flavour. The current top comment on this post explains it quite well though, I’d recommend reading that to get a better idea.

  • Decaf beans

  • Very informative, thank you! Frequent Coffee looks quite nice, but I don’t like buying from American companies so I’ll try to find a comparable one in Canada. My current favourite roaster, Hatch, does offer a decaf bean so I may try that first, but I’d like to find someone that specifically does decaf in Canada.

  • I do both, but more espresso than V60. I also enjoy manual grinding for courser grinds, it’s just espresso I don’t like grinding for. So the plan is the DF54 would be for espresso and the manual (Timemore S3) would be for V60, french press, moka pot, etc.

  • Will do. I’ll make a post in this community when whichever one I decide on shows up in the mail. I’ll probably go with the DF54 with upgraded red titanium burrs but we’ll see. It’s definitely the better value for money.

  • I love Jesse Welles. If anyone here likes the sound if this cover, check out his original music. He’s a lyrical genius.

  • SBA #204 is

  • Yeah the first few were called adventures before being abbreviated.

  • Not that it should matter much but that’s a very nice looking bag. I always appreciate a well designed bag of coffee.

  • Well, a couple reasons. Firstly, I don’t usually drink my espresso right away, usually I’m doing both coffee and breakfast at the same time in order to get out the door in time for daycare and work, so sometimes it’s 5+ mins before I can drink it and in my single walled glass it gets cold. Another reason is I like to see what I’m pulling while I’m pulling it. It’s good to see the side profile while it’s being pulled so I can see how much crema, and the colour of the liquid itself. I like to see as much as I can, personally. As a third, but much less important reason, it does just look the coolest. And I like to take pictures of my espresso pulls, both to post here and to send to my wife. She then does the same and we compare to see who pulled the nicer looking shot. It’s a fun little game.

  • I’ll have to try this one for sure. Probably won’t be my daily coffee recipe but maybe a good weekend brew. Thanks for writing it out!

  • I’m still mostly playing with my espresso machine, but I did do a couple pour overs too. I’ve got new beans from a roaster in Quebec, they’re a lot darker and more oily than I was expecting but they’re pretty good for espresso. My pour overs are with a bean from a New Brunswick roaster and are more of a medium roast.

For equipment, I’ve been thinking a lot about grinders lately. My current grinder really is barely fine enough for espresso and I want to get a proper espresso grinder but we’ll see. I’m leaning towards a DF54 at the moment. dfgrinders.ca sells them with an upgraded red titanium burr set that seem well reviewed but I don’t know who makes the burrs.

I was thinking DF64 so I had the option for SSP in the future, but I don’t know if I really want to spend an extra $250 for the thought that I might spend another $250 after that for something I’m not even sure I’ll appreciate the difference with. The DF54 is really attractive due to the price, and while the DF64 is a really good price for 64mm flat burrs, I’m not sure it’s worth the extra cost for the extra 10mm. We’ll see though, I’ve still got lots of research to do yet.

  • IP68 only specifies water resistance below 1 metre, but exactly how far below 1m depends on manufacturer. Walking into the pool and then realizing, or having it in your pocket when you jump in, probably won’t cause an issue, but if your friend is holding their phone when you push them in, when the phone hits the water it’ll likely have water pressures above the equivalent of 1m and may potentially cause damage. Not saying it will for sure, and in most cases it’ll probably be fine, but it’s just worth noting. 1m of water pressure really isn’t very much at all. I know for watches, 30m is the bare minimum in most cases, because anything less than that isn’t even rain proof for heavier rains. A shower is around 50m of pressure I believe, though it’s been a while since I researched it. I’ll try to find a chart later today if I remember.

Edit: below is a generic guide for water resistance for watches. Obviously a watch is going to be more likely to make contact with water than a phone, and if your phone’s in your pocket, the fabric will obviously buffer a lot of that water pressure, but still.

  • Very detailed! I’ll definitely be trying this one soon. I’ll also check out his other recipes too.

  • Huh, can’t say I’ve ever heard that before but I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’ve always heard when it’s fully open it acts the same as a V60. Maybe I’ll try opening it only slightly and see if I notice a difference.

  • Lance Hedrick’s recipe has water before beans too I think. I’ve done it a few times and it turned out excellent, but the recipe as a whole is a fair bit more complicated so I usually stick with the one I wrote about in the post. Maybe I’ll try your recipe for my afternoon cup today. I haven’t had a good iced coffee in a while.

  • I get 2 per year so 36 would feel like unlimited.

  • I don’t mind doing dishes (or anything else in the kitchen), it’s the laundry I fucking hate doing. Seriously, the absolute worst chore ever. My mother is the exact opposite, she genuinely enjoys doing laundry but hates dealing with the kitchen (except cooking, she loves to cook). So my dad always cleans the kitchen every night, I haven’t seen her clean the kitchen (or bathrooms actually either) since I’ve been alive. I’m trying to be similar, I try to always clean the kitchen every night so my wife doesn’t have to, because that’s her least favourite chore. Unfortunately her second least favourite chore is laundry, so we both struggle to get it done.
