It's not like they enforced the rule to begin with. In the entire history of the US, only one church has lost tax exempt status because of it.

  Actually, it was in 92 and they lost it for taking out full page ads opposing Clinton.
- That was my thought exactly. Those that will already were but it is sad that it's getting more official.
Tax religion
- Just tax all money-collecting organizations uniformly. The constitution specifies that laws can’t be made respecting religion, so it’s unconstitutional to carve out tax exemptions for churches.

Not that I agree with this, but now that this is possible, could the Vatican (at least for those churches that take orders from it) force a US wide political stance? Don't let individual churches have their own choice as only the pope knows what's best for America?

Just what they needed. The last century of progress toward equality (which seems to have stalled) was feeling pretty oppressive to those fragile bastards.
