Canada quietly probing citizens over alleged war crimes committed while serving in the IDF during Gaza war; launched in 2024, investigation remains unannounced; Jewish community voices concern: 'Canada is becoming more hostile toward us by the day'
Canada’s federal police have launched a criminal investigation into several IDF soldiers who also hold Canadian citizenship, on suspicion of crimes against humanity allegedly committed during their military service, Canadian media reported Tuesday.
The report, first published by the Toronto Star, marks the first time Canadian authorities have formally opened a war crimes investigation against dual Israeli-Canadian nationals. The move has triggered concern and controversy within Canada’s Jewish and Israeli communities.
According to the report, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) are investigating Canadian citizens who served in the IDF, whether in active duty or as reservists, during the war in Gaza. The probe reportedly began in 2024 but remained under wraps until now. It could include evidence collection, information sharing with international bodies and potentially even indictments on Canadian soil.
Jewish communities are not monolithic. This, like the genocide itself, is a wedge issue. People are being forced to confront the reality and scope of these past 20 months, and the occupation writ large.
A third said it’s causing Israeli families to reconsider sending their children to serve in Israel as lone soldiers
It's already working as intended! I'm glad to see that there is accountability for Canadians who go out of their way to participate in war crimes and crimes against humanity
Killing children, hospital patients, doctors, humanitarian aid workers, journalists and people who are just trying not to starve in Gaza are not behaviours we can tolerate as Canadians, so we should investigate if our dual-citizens took part in it. If not, then it's fine.
Kinda. We've been hearing about our WW2 misdeeds quite a bit. There is probably multiple reasons, none good, as the narrative seems to be "Canadians aren't good".
We 🇨🇦 have a terrible history of being inhumane in war. We don't want to be culpable in MORE barbarism. If Canadians who served in the IDF did NOT commit atrocious acts like murdering babies, pregnant women, and aid workers, they have nothing to worry about.
Being a particular religion/ethnicity does not exempt someone from being investigated. It is not racist/bigoted/anti-semitic.
