About the outages (July 1st and 2nd 2024)
  • Good morning and happy Canada Day. Thanks for working tirelessly to get things running.

Seems like the API, apps and other frontends were working but the main web frontend wasn't? I wonder if it is anything similar to what happened to the unfortunate feddit.de

  • 1 boater found dead, 2 others missing on Lake Winnipeg, say RCMP
  • My free advice for Lemmings:

Alcohol and water mix well at home, in the park and at the bar, alternating helps with hangovers.

They do not mix well outside. Do not go swimming or boating while drunk. It will be much harder to stop people from doing stupid shit that you and your drunk friends might think of doing on land.

  • Cash transactions are way down. These advocates say the feds need to do something
  • I carry cash and I give it to people in need, I don't mind cashless payment being the default but at least some of the following things need to happen before we can fully move to that:

    • Canada Post needs to open a savings account/credit card so that it is not profit motivated and accessible to disadvantaged people. Most poor people can't afford the annual fee for cards with decent benefits, and to get it waived you need to have significant deposits with your bank/credit union.
    • We need a public option compared to Visa/MC/Amex, even if it's only usable domestically. Letting a handful of non-Canadian companies make a percentage of all Canadians' transactions is ridiculous and if there was no cash then they would look to jack up rates to whatever they wanted.
    • We need regulations in how credit card companies can charge merchants and customers.
  • Sleepers of lemmy, do you have your cell phone in your dreams?
  • I had a nightmare one time when I was video calling my family from my phone who were on a plane that was falling out of the sky... since then I started checking flightradar once or twice whenever they go on flights.

Link is a 1h42m video interview between Louis Rossmann, FUTO and Immich developers with a introduction to Immich by Louis.

Immich is an open source self-hosted in-development tool to manage image libraries from a central server, and sync/distribute them across your devices, as an alternative to Google Photos. Also see: https://immich.app

The important news here is that FUTO has funded full time development on Immich for 3 years.

When the Virginia high school teacher recently visited the fast-food chain, the food alone without a beverage cost double that amount. Roberts, 38, now only gets fast foo...

Where Driving Consumes the Most of Your Life (And the Least) - CityNerd

    >In 1974, Ivan Illich wrote that the typical American male spent 25% of his waking life either driving a car or working for the income required to pay for one. 50 years later, is this true? And, which cities consume the most -- and least -- of our time with driving?

    • Les Entrepôts Presto
    • Extra Foods
    • Fortinos
    • Freshmart
    • L'Intermarché

Yes there are other big oligopoly chains like metro, Sobeys/Safeway, Pattison, but I think it's best to start with one major chain to see how much coordinated action can affect them.

Has anyone bought from here before? Looking to upgrade my NAS drives.

    12TB for $80 - serverpartdeals.com - Infosec.Pub

Costs I estimate to be typical for 1 HDD, about 120USD which is about 170CAD

For 5 HDDs, I estimate about 485USD which is about 685CAD.

Ymmv, and these drives are if you just want bulk capacity at the lowest price over all else.

Freight railroads must keep 2-person crews, according to new federal rule first proposed under Obama

    cross-posted from: https://lemm.ee/post/28549386

    > >“As trains — many carrying hazardous material — have grown longer, crews should not be getting smaller,” said Eddie Hall, the president of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union. He praised the FRA for taking the step President Joe Biden promised. Hall said keeping two people in the cab of a locomotive is crucial now that railroads rely on longer trains that routinely stretch for miles.
