Why I got temporarily banned from, and why I’m not going back to Reddit.
Someone made a post with a picture of a blonde haired blue eyed child. The title was “Would you slap this child for 88 million dollars?”
I said “Slap!?!?? I would eat that child’s still beating heart for 88 million dollars.”
Next day I log in to find out I had been temp banned for 7 days for sexualization/abuse of a minor.
I uninstalled Reddit. That was 11 days ago and I haven’t been back. Context is important. Obviously, no one is going to offer me 88 million dollars to eat a child’s heart. Not to mention, do you really want to make deals with people that can offer that to you? I mean, I wouldn’t.
All this has led me to realize. I don’t want to be part of a community with no sense of humor.
I would post a link but not only was my comment deleted. The thread was too I think.
I once created a LPT post about how rotating different shampoos can help prevent your body from developing tolerance (this is still a great LPT by the way; if you have dandruff or some other bodily condition like dry skin and your shampoo or lotion loses efficacy over time, try buying a few different types and rotating your usage so you don’t develop tolerance). Aaaanyway, my post got deleted for being “medical advice.” Reddit kids are the worst.
I read about a similar situation recently ... a thread where people were joking around about NSFW stuff and someone commented "that guy must be hung" (as in "big member") and got suspended for hate speech / inciting violence because the mod apparently thought they meant "go hang that guy" (as in execute).
So yes, context matters greatly, especially when dealing with snarky comments and reactions to shitposts, where people usually aren't as serious.
Honestly that's pretty bad compared to some of the times I got banned over the years. I got banned once for pointing out that a post about not wanting to talk to men about feminism was toxic and detrimental to spreading understanding of ideas. The mods of some of the subs will just ban you for saying something is illogical.
I used to mod some big subs and saw one of the dumbest ways the admins banned someone.
So one of the mods I knew posted a video of a picture containing a microwave with Alvin & The Chipmunks photoshopped in. The video had audio of a microwave turned on with high pitched screaming too.
That 14 second video he posted on a sub he modded got the admins to permanently ban him across Reddit and then refuses to ever reply to him when he asked why. It was perfectly acceptable for that subreddit too.
Hell I even started a conversation with some admins for some other issues and asked them about it. They ignored that question completely lol.
I don't regret leaving that site. I do regret modding big subs tho lmao.
Most of spacedicks was just stupid stuff (and I think one or two actual space dicks) last time I looked. It was the kind of sub you'd browse once for the laughs and then never have any urge to go back unless someone linked to it. And the warnings were waaaaaayyyy overdone, to the point that when it got banned I remember being shocked that anyone would genuinely be offended by it.
I'll never understand it, lol. But now I don't have to, so there's that. Couldn't pay me to go back now.
I got it to work by opening in my mobile Firefox based browser and going into desktop mode, so clearly r€ddit isn't doing good enough work to block people from accessing it.
This is my second temporary ban. I have a similar username on Reddit. A couple of people were saying that I was a trash human for having this username. So I told one of them “I love you. I unironically hope you have a long and happy life. I hope that all the good things happen to you.”
I got perma-banned for pointing out that if we wanted to find out if ancient execution methods worked there were plenty of child molesters around.
Literally the next day their was a huge thread at the top of the technology subreddit saying all kinds of shit like that about printer company executives. I appealed asking what the difference was and all I got back was a canned response. I checked a few days later and all the comments on that thread were still there.
The only conclusion I can make from this is that Reddit wants to be a safe space for child molesters specifically which seems pretty sus to me.
Weird, I always got permabanned for similar jokes.
They really started cracking down on dark humor right around the time they first told 3P developers just how hard they were fucking them over. My guess is that it's part of the overall enshittification plan - sterilization of all posts in preparation for the IPO.
Ironically, my appeal to my last permaban went through during the blackout in June. I got an email about it, but I never bothered to log back in.
I got banned from multiple subreddit because i wrote a comment in a covid subreddit about the new WHO invistigation that point at Wuhan lab to be the source.
I also got banned from r/blackTwitterPepole or something like that, because I couldn't provide an image proof of my skin that I am black.
What annoying is that the subreddit is featured in r/all and I cannot block it.
Yeah, there is actually a way to block subreddits, you had to go to the old reddit and add some keys to filter it out from the r/all feed. I actually blocked BPT for that same reason. When going into a post I often did not look which subreddits I would be commenting on when I was coming from r/all so naturally unwittinglycommented on a lot of BPT posts. And I would often find messages, all from BPT, saying my comment was deleted and apparently I needed to send a picture of my skin(?!) Weird creepy and racist so I had to block them from my feed because I'm not interested in seeing posts from a community like that let alone interact with them.
Yeah, the whole hysteria behind suppressing speech regarding COVID being a lab leak was ridiculous. And the more you read the worse it is, there were some bad actors in the west with serious conflicts of interests that published and push the narrative of the virus coming from a wetmarket and politically attacked anyone who published any information to the contrary. Then a year later evidence only keeps mounting towards a lab leak. I wish could write more, the whole thing is bonkers and people should be at the very least out of a job.
There are three reasons that I can think of to why my comment is downvoted. One, these are account that Chinese agency runs to downvote anything relating to wuhan lab. Second, these are BPT useres who don't see how racist the subreddit is. Three, and what I think is the most likely, they think I am a conspiracy theorist, white supremacist person with right wing agenda.
The funny thing is I am from the Middle East, have dark skin color, triple vacinated and ware a mask all the time in poorly ventilated areas.
I look at things from an outsider perspective and the more your read invistigation, and then you look at social media and politican you see how things are so fucked up. They gaslight normal people who actually read reports and validate information and label them as right wing, concipricy theorist and flat earther. While they push the others towards believing whatever they want to push as the absolute truth. Although, history is full with corporations, governments and media claims that turn to be deadly.
Thanks for sharing your experience at least I know I am not alone...
I don’t know. The original post was removed. The mods put a note on it saying the the child had actually been abused. So, I don’t know if I was supposed to know who he was or what.
Thing is, the rest of us who abandoned reddit years ago warned of exactly this kind of thing happening. We were called Nazis. You guys are catching up after years of name-calling those who saw what was happening and now want our sympathy.
