[Meta] How do y'all post clips/animations on Lemmy? Only GIF seems to work.
[Meta] How do y'all post clips/animations on Lemmy? Only GIF seems to work.
So I had a clip I wanted to upload to a lemmy comment:
- Tried it as an (avc) mp4... Failed.
- OK, too big? I shrink it to 2MB, then 1MB. Failed.
- VP9 Webm maybe? 2MB, 1MB, failed. AV1? Failed.
- OK, fine, no video. Lets try an animated AVIF. Failed. It seems lemmy doesn't even take static AVIF images
- WebP animation then... Failed. Animated PNG, failed.
End result, I have to burden the server with a massive, crappy looking GIF after trying a dozen formats. With all due respect, this is worse than some aging service like Reddit that doesn't support new media formats.
For reference, I'm using the web interface. Is this just a format restriction of lemmy.world, or an underlying software support issue?
Are you trying to upload?
Have you considered using markdown?

EDIT: Seems to work! Didn't realize I could embed videos like that, there's no shortcut in the browser UI.
10 0 ReplyI’m on Mlem (Mobile) through lemmy.world and you post looks like this:
Everyone else’s in this thread looks fine though.

msg "Resonse body larger than size limit"
*on sopuli.xyz
It works on my lemmy.ca account tho, but only after I enable java scripts for the video embeds.
5 0 ReplyYou mean you can't see the embed in the above comment? What client?

Upload it to catbox.moe instead and then hotlink it to here
5 0 ReplyYeah, I guess a link is fine, but can I embed them somehow?
EDIT: Embedding seems to work.
4 0 ReplyYou generally can embed them the same way as you would a gif with the

formatThat's how I just embedded this mp4.

Works fine on desktop/web, is a bit broken for phone apps, depending on the app.5 0 Reply
For reference, here's an example
A quick VP9 webm video, 1920x1080, 2.8MB: https://files.catbox.moe/l5yvor.webm
A smaller webm, 1920x1080, 1.1 MB and still looks fine: https://files.catbox.moe/foodzx.webm
The GIF. 400x225, 12FPS, 5.6MB, optimized as best I can yet looks like a can of spam. But it's what Lemmy would take:

3 0 ReplyYeah, Book 3 of The Legend of Korra. That whole season is solid gold.
A longer clip with sound: https://files.catbox.moe/8z5ggp.webm

I had no problems uploading animated webp so this is propably Lemmy.world limitation
2 0 ReplyInteresting. That's what I was afraid of.
I guess I need to make a Lemmy.world support thread for that?
