[Meta] How do y'all post clips/animations on Lemmy? Only GIF seems to work.
[Meta] How do y'all post clips/animations on Lemmy? Only GIF seems to work.
So I had a clip I wanted to upload to a lemmy comment:
- Tried it as an (avc) mp4... Failed.
- OK, too big? I shrink it to 2MB, then 1MB. Failed.
- VP9 Webm maybe? 2MB, 1MB, failed. AV1? Failed.
- OK, fine, no video. Lets try an animated AVIF. Failed. It seems lemmy doesn't even take static AVIF images
- WebP animation then... Failed. Animated PNG, failed.
End result, I have to burden the server with a massive, crappy looking GIF after trying a dozen formats. With all due respect, this is worse than some aging service like Reddit that doesn't support new media formats.
For reference, I'm using the web interface. Is this just a format restriction of lemmy.world, or an underlying software support issue?

Are you trying to upload?
Have you considered using markdown?

EDIT: Seems to work! Didn't realize I could embed videos like that, there's no shortcut in the browser UI.
10 0 ReplyI’m on Mlem (Mobile) through lemmy.world and you post looks like this:
Everyone else’s in this thread looks fine though.
5 0 ReplyProbably because it’s AV1.
I just noticed it doesn’t work on my IPhone (16) not even through the link: https://files.catbox.moe/foodzx.webm
But the VP9 one does. That's… Disappointing.

3 0 ReplyI figured. Works for me on desktop linux too.
AV1 support is just one more of those things Apple has been dense about.

Doesn't work for me:
No video with supported formate and MIME type found.
code "validate-file-size"
msg "Resonse body larger than size limit"
*on sopuli.xyz
It works on my lemmy.ca account tho, but only after I enable java scripts for the video embeds.
5 0 ReplyYou mean you can't see the embed in the above comment? What client?
4 0 ReplyCertain client work and some don't. Jeroba does not work but Firefox does.
5 0 ReplyI'm on firefox lol, but through Ubuntu snap... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
