In case anyone’s wondering, it’s probably because you learn that even really old computers are still really powerful and work fine under Linux especially if you’re gonna use them as a small home server.
Having the right motivations behind design decisions is everything.
I use Linux Mint Cinnamon, which is very full-featured and turn-key. It is not designed to be stripped down and lightweight; it is designed to be a drop-in replacement for windows. And it still feels like greased lightning in comparison. Windows just feels like a bad product now, even if we ignore the spying and the non-free nature of it.
Alright, ive watched this anime twice and i guess im clearly missing something. What's special about it? The animation was okay. They could have thrown in a couple of jokes to spice it up. Maybe toss a pie at the floaty girl once in a while, huh?
the reason it looks to you like it's just part of the crowd is because it helped define that crowd, in a direction that was distinctly different from 80s cyberpunk and far more rooted in our modern reality - which is impressive considering it's approaching 30 years old now and the internet was in its infancy at the time. it was a pioneer in visual elements and aesthetic vis a vis the web, and it's ingrained in counterculture as its initial popularity spread on 4chan.
i've heard it said that lain is to autism as neon genesis evangelion is to depression, so it may also just be that you're not the target audience.
For the era of tech shown, you'd also have tons of clicking and whirring hard drive noise as well. Old Hard Drives are noisy. You can hear all the seeking and read/write operations.
Personally, I find that noise comforting, but the inconsisent nature of it would make it hard to tune out.
Fair warning, it's a weird one. I had to read a few short essays after I finished it to really get it. Highly recommend, it's only 12 episodes so not much of a time investment
This reminds me of a relatively early Real Life Comics, wherein a character is introduced to Linux and, shortly thereafter, is seen to be building Beowulf clusters.
