I'm sure we can watch them invent lightsabers, hyperdrives, and discover midichlorians. Maybe they can crossover and find the Planet of the Apes—that would be a wizard Easter egg.
Maybe we'll find out the Dark Side comes from anti-midichlorians instead of just human nature. Someone get me Hollywood—I'm sitting on a goldmine of ideas here!
Yeah but the ideas Lucasfilm/Disney want to use are more in the line of:
The Force will originate from a group of pastel colored beings called Care Bears combining their magical powers, and their handler, called Captain Planet, loudly proclaiming "by your powers combined, I declare the force created!"
Then we'll have the illegitimate brother of captain planet, lets call him Darkstepper, wanting to harness the new magic for himself, devises a way to extract it from the Care Bears, and turn it into dark magic.
But Captain Planet comes to the rescue and makes the Care Bears agree to release all combined magic into the air to prevent misuse, unbeknowst to them they will dissolve from this action, but in the end they see they will live on in the stream of all encompassing magic created from their being.
Oh, we'll also need a throwback, so they give us "Horses in Space"... somehow.
...
This is what we will get when they proclaim "screw the lore/we're not bound by lore"
In closing: Why create something within an exisiting IP if you feel you don't want to be bound by the existing ip in the first place?
Mangold told io9 last year shortly after his involvement in a “Star Wars” movie was revealed that his project would center on the origins of the Force and how it was “understood, wielded and harnessed”
Yes, things like that have never caused ire in fans before...
The problem with lore is if you use it when it makes sense it's great and when you disregard it when it makes sense to make a better story and it's good no one really notices. Taking from the star trek world the trill was a cool concept and they wanted to reuse that species to tell a cool story with dax but didn't want to cover up Terry's face and wanted the joining to be a blending rather than the Symbiote be the dominant consciousness.
So you know how they resolve the changes... They didn't and it was good and almost no one cared and at most it was fun for nerds to try to come up with headcannon to resolve the two but should never brought to the screen as it would sound like fanfiction as it always does.
From trying to fix the parsec goof to why do klingons look different in TOS. It never turns out well unless you have a compelling story driven angle then like I said we don't notice. As you as a writer are driving the lore not letting the lore drive you.
Just going back in time doesn't change the lore requirements. If anything back in time is harder as you have to show a less advanced society that can become the one that exists.
That's probably a good way to go, though I hate the idea of doing "the first Jedi." That being said, if the movie fucks everything up, 25,000 years is a lot of time for whatever they break to be fixed and covered up.
They filled up every single gap from episode 1 to 9 (well except that whole emperor returning thing), so it makes sense to do something completely different.
I think they had something about force sensitive clones. Bad Batch also showed the emperor starting the project. They've been pretty active in trying to tie in their trilogy while staying at a distance.
Did any Star Wars movie ever care about "lore"? It is a fairy tale (not even Fantasy) set into a futuristic setting. It has as much lore as Cinderella, if at all.
