The blue sky through a gap in the trees
A momentary lapse in background noise so it's unexpectedly quiet
The feeling of wind tugging at your clothes
Rain on the roof
Kids running home from the school bus
Starlings in the tree out my office window singing
The sun on my back, the wind on my front
Sore muscles from hard exercise
The twist in a short story I read, and the wow moment
My room being tidy
Why is the word bird required? A kiwi is a kiwi, it's literally the name of the animal. You don't say pigeon bird?
Do you have a 401k?
In terms of focussing, no.
I will sometimes listen to specific music to build concentration but more than one input and its a distraction.
I think people who spend a lot of time focussing on their devices find it easy to piggyback that focus onto something else.
It has ever been so.
How many people who could have changed the world were too tired, poor, hungry, or ill.
I don't live in the us so I can't comment on any change that has been or not been.
I do know that privilege itself obscures experience. Compassion and empathy are built on experience. Therefore expecting someone who is privileged to have compassion or empathy to those without the same privilige is unrealistic. They have to be shown, or brought to a point where they can align their experience with others.
exclusively cishet white population who are financially well off.
...there's your problem.
Why would they care? At worst they're unaffected. At best they're benefitting. What is their impetus for change?
Yes. Welcome to the UK. You will need to adjust to small aggravations such as this. Good luck.
I had a look at the list and they're not on the list, just like all of the other countries that aren't on the list.
I hope that helps? Just reiterating, the list that you're looking at doesn't have all the countries in the world. It's a short list of countries.
I mean you could look at it and say oh wow that's six of the G7 countries, which are considered the countries which largely steer 'western" democracy and have done for the last 50 odd years, plus sweden, which is widely considered to be the most progressive western democracy, and try to work out why one of the countries on that list is so ass backwards in its social welfare.
But maybe it'd be easier to draw a comparison between that and Russia, which is a thinly veiled dictatorship and was booted out of the G8 10 years ago when it annexed Crimea, and China, which is literally ruled by the Chinese communist party. Those are two very valid and worthwhile comparisons to America, the world's leading liberal democracy, with regards to entrenched workers rights.
After the black Saturday fires in Australia, many home owners who were insured discovered to their horror that they were under insured
The value of their possessions and the repair value of their home had increased but they hadn't increased the level of insurance coverage to match. Despite suffering total losses, many have been unable to afford to rebuild.
This has been in the back of my mind seeing the LA fires. This is just the beginning. It will take decades for some of these people to re establish.
