It's a tricky one, because a lot of ML these days is transformer-based, because transformers are unreasonably effective, and many things a transformer can do well, an LLM can do okay at. (e.g. translation, transcription, OCR ...)

A lot of people are super convinced by an impressive demo. We have computers you can just talk to now! That's legit amazing, actually! The whole field of NLP is 80% solved! The other 20% is where it's a lying fuckin idiot and that's probably not fixable ...

ooh good, i'll add that generative AI will likely become as radioactive to the public as crypto is.

basically. Nvidia sometimes has off years, where a processor generation doesn't work out. Unfortunately, this one's coincided with a stupid bubble. So they're shoving out number cruncher cards which are at the limits of what you can do with stacking up the previous generation of chips, and the cards are crappy and have a likely lifetime in months - because they correctly estimate their market doesn't care.

AI fans are people who literally cannot tell good from bad. They cannot see the defects that are obvious to everyone else. They do not believe there is such a thing as quality, they think it's a scam. When you claim you can tell good from bad, they think you're lying.
