The return of Trump means Britain must rethink its defence strategy – and role in the world
  • You'd also need a separate type of sign for kph, but one that still adhers to the current standard (white cirle with a red border and a black number). Or put a separate rectangular sign under it with "kph" to denote that the number in the circle is kph rather than mph.

The problem is that you can't just replace one, you'd need to replace them all on the road due to the repeater signs. It would be confusing to see some say 60 and others 30 on the same stretch of road as some repeater signs have been replaced but others haven't.

There'd also be the issue of cars understanding the signs with their sign recognition software, and drivers having to switch their digital spedo, as you usually only see one unit rather than both like on older anaologue speedos.

  • Russia suffers worst month for casualties as Ukraine's Western allies would be resolute for "as long as it takes", says UK defence chief
  • 1,500 dead and injured “every single day

No idea how many of those are dead vs injured, but to put that into context, the UK lost 457 people in Afghanistan in a 20 year period, and 179 in Iraq. 255 were lost in the Falklands.

I'd take the figures coming out of Ukraine with a pinch of salt but even if they're half of what's being said, these numbers are crazy. Such a crazy waste of life on all sides.

  • Why do people on reddit seem to hate Lemmy/Mbin/other federated link aggregators?
  • It is. Go into your account settings -> blocks and at the bottom is a section for blocking instances.

I've got Lemmy.ml in there. You'll still see comments from their users and posts from users in other communities but you shouldn't see any of their communities in your feed.

  • NHS-branded baby formula could prevent parents paying too much, watchdog says
  • I'd doubt the NHS would go for this. Our experience is that they heavily promote breastfeeding and seem to put as much resistance into using formula as possible.

This would seem at odds with their current approach of trying to get more people to breastfeed.

  • Somebody moved UK's oldest satellite, and no-one knows who or why
  • "It's still relevant because whoever did move Skynet-1A did us few favours," says space consultant Dr Stuart Eves.

"It's now in what we call a 'gravity well' at 105 degrees West longitude, wandering backwards and forwards like a marble at the bottom of a bowl. And unfortunately this brings it close to other satellite traffic on a regular basis.

"Because it's dead, the risk is it might bump into something, and because it's 'our' satellite we're still responsible for it," he explains.

So basically, you can't park there mate!

  • Garmin watch users: Do you use the suggested workouts?
  • I hadn't even thought about creating an event and have it create a program for me!

I've heard setting the daily suggested work out to be based on heart rate instead of time or pace is supposed to be much better but I haven't tried it yet. But from reading around the suggestions are apparently really beneficial. I've been following them for a couple of weeks now so still too early to tell.

I think I read that it takes elevation into consideration but it might depend on the device.

  • lemmyf.uk shutting down
  • Monthly Active Users (MAU) is probably the best metric for the health of Lemmy. A lot of these instances that are shutting down may be single-user instances or ones that people spun up just to mess about with them.

However, please donate to your instance if you can, it doesn't have to be much :)

Garmin watch users: Do you use the suggested workouts?

I've had my watch about 6 weeks now and I've just started to try to recommend workouts to see if they make any difference.

Just wondering if people use the suggested workouts or whether they're just a bit rubbish? How do I know if the suggestions are accurate for what I need?

What does your ideal Sunday look like?

For me it would be where the sun is shining, the house is tidy and there's no chores to do.

Start off with a decent breakfast and a decent mug of coffee. I'd have had my run the previous day so can rest a bit. Maybe head out for a walk, grab some lunch at the local garden centre. I've just redownloaded the game Ingress after not playing it for years, so maybe play that for a couple of hours.

Get home and watch the F1 while I prepare and cook a lasagne in the afternoon. Smash said lasagne with a glass or two of a nice red wine and then spend the evening playing Minecraft for a few hours, then an hour or two of reading before bed.

The reality though is far different as I have two young kids!

Do you wear underwear under your running shorts?

Apologies if this is a bit too much information!

I realised recently that my shorts have a netting like swimming shorts do and decided to ditch the boxers and see how it was. What an absolute game changer! I don't know why I didn't do this a year ago when I started running.
