Peertube's moment might come soon
  • If you have a bunch of people guess how many M&M's are in a jar you can average the guesses and you'll come very close to the correct amount. A recommendation system can be very democratic in that way. When reddit still had their public API I would take advantage of this fact and use it to decide if something was a "deal" or not on PC parts. I was tracking the prices of computer ram at the time as an experiment. It worked very well. If they are federated properly, then their content can be filtered and appear on an instances front page.

  • Mastodon Is the Good One
  • I can definitely see certain brands doing well with their own forums. Sports teams would be a very good niche for hosting their own instances. Another one would be the entertainment industry. It's just not feasible for companies that aren't interesting to talk about. Like there won't be a Coca-Cola instance worth a lot of users.

  • France has banned pro-Palestinian protests and vowed to protect Jews from resurgent antisemitism
  • The easiest way to deflect criticism is to claim it's racism or antisemitism. China does the exact same thing. It's obvious and lazy. I can't believe people still fall for it. Israel is not the representative of Judaism. They have a far right militant dictator running their country right now who is killing many innocent people. The fact that they are still recognized as a country is beyond reason at this point.

  • How do you feel about financing a genocide?
  • I think most people are qualified to say that killing is bad regardless of the reasons or intent. If the goal of Israel is to put a stop to Hamas attacks then they certainly aren't going to get there by killing random Palestinians regardless. That is only going to create more people who hate Israel in the long run.

  • How do you feel about financing a genocide?
  • Israel is retaliating against civilians for an attack carried out by Hamas. This is what America did in Afghanistan after the attack on the world trade center in 2001. It was dumb and it's dumb now.

  • How do you feel about financing a genocide?
  • It's giving me Iraq war vibes, except my friends aren't getting involved. The escalation doesn't make sense at all unless you consider Netanyahu needed to distract from his aspirations of becoming a dictator.

  • The worst part about plastic bottles is the energy required to make them.

They go through a 2 stage process where the plastic is melted and injection molded into a "pre-form"

Then they get fed into a blowmolding machine where they are heated in different areas by many 2k watt halogen bulbs. Once they've been heated properly they go into the blow mold where they are pressurized with ~500psi air.

The molds are liquid cooled through an industrial pipe system with an extremely large refrigeration system. The energy required to run all of the equipment is insane. A factory can consume as much energy in one hour as a standard home will in an entire year.

This doesn't include all of the energy required for moving materials around since performs can be made at one factory and shipped to another and empty bottles are often shipped to warehouses and then off to the plant where they will be filled, then warehoused then distributed etc.

  • I'm looking for the best way to recover data from an android phone that isn't unlocked or rooted.

Long story short, I was arrested for disorderly conduct and "resisting arrest." The police took my phone and arrested me when I told them I was recording. They took me in a car, and we waited for about 15 minutes, then they brought my phone back. When I got out of jail, the recording only went up to a few seconds before a key moment and then ended before the time the police arrived.

Under file properties, the time 'edited' does add up to the length of the recording after another short recording had stopped. I started and stopped recording, and the started again shortly afterward. If you trim the end of a video, does it also change the time it was edited?

The Trash folder on my phone was empty, I have never emptied this folder, perhaps I've never deleted anything in 1.5 yrs? I still have 40 gb left in storage.

    One of three things happened:

    1. I bumped the phone, and it stopped recording, I wasn't looking at the screen at all and was just holding it against my chest.
    2. My phone overheated and stopped recording. It is a pixel 5a 5g, it has overheated on me from just sitting in the sun, so I can see it overheating while recording, it was very hot out at the time.
    3. The police officer trimmed the video down and then emptied my trash folder to make it harder to recover.

I've tried several different apps and haven't been able to recover anything relevant, only old files that I deleted (Again, I don't remember ever emptying my trash folder)

All the options for copying a full disk image require root, which requires unlocking the bootloader, which requires wiping the entire phone. I might still be able to recover data that way, but who knows.

I'm almost willing to have it sent off to have the data pulled from the physical storage inside the device if I have to.

I feel like I'm going crazy, it would really help to have the rest of the video since it does show someone threatening my life with a weapon.

I already explained this to my attorney. If the police claim they watched the video on my phone, they are lying since my phone would have been locked by the time they got there if it wasn't recording, right?

Trying to install Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 3000

Ok, I know this is outside of the norm for this page, I don't really care.

Backstory: I buy things from estate auctions on hi-bid. Nobody else bid on this so I got it for the minimum bid, $2.50 USD.

It was missing the hdd, and it was in a filthy barn.

Side note: auctions are generally "as-is, where is" that means you pick these items up at the location of the estate, they usually pull things out and organize them, but they don't clean them or anything usually.

I have an extra IDE HDD, so I threw that in and tried to install Windows XP. I got errors halfway through saying "setup cannot copy the file:"

Then I got it to go all the way through, but it won't boot.

Then I got a system error that the HDD is not present.

I tried an IDE adapted SSD, still not recognized.

Then I got the HDD recognized again.

    I figured I would check the ram: 1x 256MB. I threw in 2x512MB, that's a neat trick.

I also swapped out the cd drive since it was having a hard time opening up anyway.

Now I'm back to, "setup cannot copy the file:"

Maybe a bad CD burn? Idk, it's been awhile since I've done this.

I finally got around to putting up some trellis for the cucumbers!

We live around the corner from the farm/home store. They sell 8ft sections of this livestock fencing, they had a pile of damaged pieces for half off!

I just carried it home, I passed a guy who was working on his yard and I said, "just out walking the fence!"

    I created a Lemmy instance!

I can't get email working and I federation doesn't seem to work either, but it's up!

I created an instance for the town I live in as the main form of communication is a fb page. Once I get these issues fixed I will promote it and hopefully get people using it.

Not getting new sign up notifications on new instance.

Installed on Ubuntu Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS Using Ansible. Site is up and running, I have an admin account. I can go through the sign up process, email is required, question is required, no captcha. I don't receive any notifications about new signups.

Is there any way to mark posts as read without clicking them?

I have "show read posts" unchecked, so posts I've clicked no longer show in my feed. I'd like to hide posts I'm not interested in seeing without clicking on them.

What would a federated/ activity pub selling platform look like?

I sell stuff on eBay and FB marketplace. In the vein of platforms that you love to hate. What would it take to build software on the fediverse for the purpose of selling things?

I switched to Cellular home Internet, here are my mods so far.

I live in a semi-rural community with few internet options.

T-mobile become an option so I decided to give it a shot. It's a decent price/performance option between DSL and cable internet.

As you can see I've made a fully custom hanging shelf with a piece of scrap 1/4" plywood and twine for optimal placement.

I then cracked open the unit and installed external antenna adapters. I placed a directional antenna on the roof.

I kept experiencing complete connection dropouts which became worse over time. After some research I found that other users said that the problem was the unit overheating.

I placed a 120mm fan on top. I wired up a barrel jack so it can be plugged into a normal 12v adapter and it just stays on all the time. I might clean this up and use a temperature controller in the future. It's currently held to the unit with scotch tape.

Everything has been stable for now. Maybe I'll find some more ways to tweak it to get better performance.

I like that this is a general instance.

see a lot of discussion about adding more specific communities on this instance and I feel as if it will dilute the community too much.

I personally see Lemmy instances as somewhat similar to old forums, many of those did so well because the community came together under a shared experience.

Lemmy is decentralized after all and instances based around interests will get created and discussion will get focused on certain instances for certain topics. Those instances will be moderated by the people who have passion and understanding for those topics.

Of course the great thing about Lemmy is that we're (mostly) free to visit other instances and if there are redundant communities it is not difficult to participate in them.

I do think it's nice to have a place to call home, a "hive" if you will. Where users can discuss their shared experience on the fediverse.
