There's More to the Reddit Meltdown Than Meets the Eye
  • This is nothing more than an opinion piece with bad takes.

    What a bullshit article.

That's 99% of what gets posted to medium.com

  • Duck Duck Go browser available for Windows
  • I have been using Brave browser with the crypto stuff disabled.

The mere fact that you have to "disable the crypto stuff" tells me all I nee to know about Brave Browser, and it's enough to ensure I'll never install it.

  • First they came for /r/pics ... now Reddit are coming for the individual personal subreddits
  • My personal subs that have been private for ages recieved messages saying they will inform me of "further steps" if I refuse to open them up.

One of them is /r/[myRedditUsername] that I use as a kind of scratch pad that I can access anywhere (I've since self hosted a wiki) that they are demanding I open up. Like seriously, no one would ever be interested in whatever is there.

They can get fucked. I deleted all of the posts and comments on all of my accounts and requested GDPR requests on all of them. reddit can get fucked.

Is it possible to disable image uploading and images being cached to my server from other instances?

I have searched and not come up with the solution, I apologize if it's obvious and I have somehow missed it.

I would like to disable uploading images on my instance, and more importantly, disable the caching of images from other instances onto my server.

It's run on a tiny server, and I simply cannot afford a larger server to deal people uploading large images on instances I'm federated to being cached onto my server.

For an example, this post https://lemmy.ml/post/1450558 was federated to my server and the image was cached on my server automatically (https://lemmy.dustybeer.com/pictrs/image/19336064-e45f-4abf-b5c2-0ce7b69a1b7c.jpeg?format=webp)

It's not a big deal for a couple of images, but I can very quickly see this exploding and using up all of my (relatively tiny) disk space.

It also seems like a great vector for a malicious party to bring down an instance they don't like if they know it's caching images.

Again I apologize if I've just missed this in the docs and my searching, but any suggestions would be appreciated.

Speed up a post that has a lot of images?
  • I just wanted to add, in the official lemmy documentation they say to use a third party as well, not the instance itself.

    https://join-lemmy.org/docs/users/02-media.html?highlight=images#images-and-video

Note that this functionality is not meant to share large images or videos, because that would require too many server resources. Instead, upload them on another platform like PeerTube or Pixelfed, and share the link on Lemmy.

This also served as a good reminder to look into disabling image uploads on my instance. I can't afford a massive server for it to host other peoples images which is both size and resource intensive.

  • How will the July 1st plastic bag ban affect you?
  • Oh that makes sense, the supermarkets I go to removed them ages ago. We have reusable cotton bags we use for supermarket items when they are needed.

I'm super glad to hear about the plastic stickers. I vaguely remember hearing about that before. It's a great change.

  • Speed up a post that has a lot of images?
  • But then, if anything happened to that service (downtime, billing, ending of free services, etc etc), the images could be lost.

If anything happens to the instance you are uploading them to, they'll be gone as well.

My personal opinion is it's much better to offload images into a service meant for images. A lot of lemmy instances are put on very small servers, with very small resources (including drive space). It's not fair to the owners of those instances to upload a bunch of large images to them.

There are plenty of options out there for image hosting. https://imgbb.com/ or https://imgbox.com/ seem to be highly recommended.

  • How will the July 1st plastic bag ban affect you?
  • I honestly thought it was already in place. So no new changes for us here.

  • Patreon is launching a free membership tier — and will let fans buy things, too
  • I give ~$15/month total to a couple of creators I really enjoy. They put a lot of hard work into their videos for a relatively niche subject, and it's not much to me. It helps them a little so I don't mind doing it.

  • Google IS selling all my personal information in Google Domains to Squarespace?
  • They aren't third party. They are buying Google Domains and all of the customers that come with it. If you don't like it, don't continue to use them. It happens every time a company gets bought out, the customers are part of that package.

  • PLEASE help test Lemmy 0.18 fixes, enterprise.lemmy.ml is the testing server with latest code
  • Is this different from voyager.lemmy.ml? If so how, and why should I join another instance instead of continuing to use that one?

  • ATTENTION: If you're actively employed by and working at Reddit...
  • Why is this posted to Technology? This has nothing to do with Technology, and belongs in one of the many reddit threads or communities that already exist.

  • Reddit starts removing moderators behind the latest protests
  • I just got a threat from them on one of the subs I moderate that is private and has been for years. It included this gem:

If this community remains private, we will reach out soon with information on what next steps will take place.

We already know what their "next steps" are. It will be interesting to see if they ban my account as well. I've already nuked all of my comments and posts. Fuck them.

  • 90-plus percent of Reddit users are on our platform, contributing, and are monetized either through ads or Reddit Premium

I wonder how many of those reddit premium members have cancelled their subscriptions. I know I did. I had premium for years as it seemed like a good way to give a little bit back to a site I was using multiple times a day, every day. As soon as Spez started his bullshit I cancelled it and won't be back.

  • YouTube --> PeerTube Next?
  • I've looked at peertube a few times, and everytime I do, it seems to be filled with nothing but videos about the latest cryptoscamcoin. I have zero interest in that at all. Until they get content worth watching, it's not going to happen.

  • Admins, we're about to have a really bad SPAM problem when Lemmy removes captcha support in v.0.18 - You ALL have a responsibility to communicate back to lemmy devs to try to stop it.
  • I disagree, once your open source project “sprouts wings” you enter an unspoken power battle

You've seen Hackers one too many times. Again you can run your instance however you want, and can defederate from instances that don't implement things they way you are demanding they should, but you do not dictate how others (or the developers) run things.

The beauty of open source is you can always fork your own. The beauty of federation is you can block whoever you want or whatever instance you want.

Other than that, you have no right to demand anything of anyone.

  • Admins, we're about to have a really bad SPAM problem when Lemmy removes captcha support in v.0.18 - You ALL have a responsibility to communicate back to lemmy devs to try to stop it.
  • I find myself really ticked off at other Admin’s abdication of duty when it comes to engaging with the developers.

Abdication of duty? Seriously? Do you think this is a job for people? Or that people that want a privacy related instance are "abdicating their duty" by not using captcha? Talk about hyperbole.

Run your instance how you want. Raise an issue with the devs if you want. Throw a fit if you want. But do not attempt to tell others how to run their instances or talk for other people and their "duties" when it comes to their own servers.

  • Which one: Revolt or Divolt?
  • There's probably a matrix instance someplace, which would be my personal preference. Maybe someone has some suggestions.

It can also be self hosted, but I'm sure there are hosted instances out there for this kind of thing already.

  • Mark Zuckerberg goes in for the kill as Elon Musk’s Twitter bleeds ad dollars
  • Zuckerberg’s company is already courting celebrities and influencers to test the app.

Even if it was someone other than Zuckerberg doing this, reading this bit would immediately turn me off to the platform.

I guess I'm old enough to have gone through they heyday of the internet at an impressionable time in my life, but I have zero time for influencers or opinions by celebrities on literally anything.

  • Ok, as a user on lemmy.ml, I'm pretty sure none, or close to, of my posts and comments are being federated.
  • You're showing up on my personal instance.

Things do sometimes take a bit to come across, and I tend to get a bunch of posts from a single instance come in at one. It does make a bit of a pain at times as I won't see anything at all from an instance, then my front page fills up with nothing but posts from one community within an instance (that's how I came across this thread).
