Bomb science 101
  • It doesn't have to be this way. My grandparents and extended family were war refugees and on the receiving side of bombings. Fortunately they and their children made it, but they lost everything else -- their homes, belongings, friends, neighbors, possibly relatives. Took them maybe 25 years of group effort to emigrate, resettle, and generally rebuild to a modest life. To my best knowledge they have never bombed anyone or participated in other violence.

So yeah, be like them. Get the fuck out of danger, take care of each other, and don't perpetuate the cycle.

  • Always loved this one. Watterston did an amazing job making the faces and postures so incredibly expressive. Likely a good study for other aspiring artists.

  • What are your favorite switches (and what spring resistance?) and what are you using right now?
  • Oh cool, glad it helped. I don't know the current key models but if you want to get even closer, try to find something with the same mechanism but a slightly heavier spring. Or swap the springs yourself if you're dedicated.

It still won't be perfect. When buckling springs actuate they pull the key downward a tiny bit (not to the bottom), and when they de-actuate they push the key back upward with a small force. That satisfying bouncy feeling just can't be replicated by linear springs. But the Kailhs come the closest IMO to matching the actuation force, press and release timing, and tactile clicky feeling.

There is also Unicom and ModelFKeyboards.com for true buckling springs, but those are all expensive and ugly IMO.

  • What are your favorite switches (and what spring resistance?) and what are you using right now?
  • I used a proper IBM Model M as long as I could. Nothing felt as good (except maybe the rarer Model F). But eventually I had to replace it.

So I got a sample pack at one point and was easily won over by Kailh bronze. Those are the next best thing to the buckling springs.

My partner hates the clicky sound though so I also got a set of the quieter purples. Those are almost as good.

Eventually I switched to Holy Pandas because I wanted something even better. They were expensive. Honestly, I think I prefer the Kailh bronze, for both work and gaming.

Just checked the Kailh website and looks like they have totally different models now so oh well, maybe this is no help.

But fuck Cherry. Their switches are inconsistent garbage.

  • What's better? KDE? Or GNOME?

    Cinnamon.

Nah just kidding. What happens is that you use enough different OSes and DEs for enough time and you start to see through the matrix. You realize they're all just visual wrappers for the underlying systems that do the real work, and the DEs don't really matter. All the major ones are good enough. And when they don't work, that's when you use command line. Then eventually, after doing that enough times, you say "fuck it all, get this GUI out of my way" and just start using CLI for everything.

  • Do you think Lemmy has a culture separate from Reddit or is it basically the same?
  • That's an interesting question and one that's worth exploring. Reddit certainly has been the source of many homegrown memes, common retorts, and witticisms used across the web. But here, you can try switching to Linux. Download various distros for free and try out combinations of release cycle, built-in apps, and desktop environment to find your favorite.

  • A company, that not only immensely obstructs transparency, but also falls into the jurisdiction of foreign / non-EU institutions.

In the US, companies contracted by the federal government must comply with data storage location requirements that DO keep the data strictly within their territory and under national jurisdiction. i believe this falls under FedRAMP regulations. I'm 95%+ certain that major EU countries have equivalent policies (probably even better ones, considering the GDPR and so forth).

That correction aside, I completely agree with the larger concern here.

  • If Trump orders soldiers to shoot Americans, he seems to have a willing ‘yes man’ at the Pentagon
  • Yeah, that's exactly what we should be concerned about. These problems aren't going to get better by killing people.

Are we really going back to this shit? I guess this country learned nothing.

  • How do I stop my partner from taking over every Bluetooth connection?

My partner keeps the Bluetooth antenna of her Android Pixel 4a (5G) on because she wears a Fitbit. On the occasion I want to use Bluetooth (e.g. in my car or via portable speaker), devices will ALWAYS connect to her phone over mine if she's anywhere nearby. Sometimes it even steals the connection when I was already connected.

Why is this? Is there some way to steal the connection back?

It happened when I had a Pixel 4a (non-5G) and with a Pixel 8a. It's especially maddening when it's the audio stream in my car. I believe I've tried unpairing both phones, pairing mine first and then hers, and hers still ends up taking priority.

EDIT: Tech Support answers only, please. If I wanted to get trolled there are plenty of other places for that.

What Android apps are worth paying for?

What non-game paid apps do you use that are worthwhile and still relevant in 2023?

For context, I have a decent amount of Google Play credit thanks to Opinion Rewards and a gift card. I'm not looking to start a book or movie collection there, nor sign up for subscription services. But I'm happy to buy the paid/pro version of useful apps.

I'm excluding games just because that's a whole topic on its own.

Here are some one-time paid apps I've been happy with:
