What do you use on desktop for your youtube frontend?
Not OP, but I personally use FreeTube. The design is not perfect, but you can add subscriptions and separate them between multiple accounts (those are all local), change themes and it even has support for SponsorBlock. If you prefer web apps, there's Invidious.
I use WSA to run NewPipe on my Windows tablet - it's a bit of effort to install everything, but it works better than using the website in Firefox. I haven't tried it yet, but it should also be possible to use it with Waydroid on Linux.
Thanks for the NewPipe recommendation, I used to have vanced but then it got... confusing keeping up which one is the real one lol
I use Syncthing to sync my phones photo library with a Google Pixel running on my server rack. If you didn't know, the first model of Google Pixel still gets unlimited full quality photo uploads to Google Photos for free, so its a great way to keep those backed up, even if I don't particularly enjoy the company they're hosted on.
SyncThing is amazing! I mainly use it to synchronise Obsidian markdown notes between devices, plus general file sharing. It's great how fast it updates
There are quite a few of them:
Ooh! Nice picks!
I love AntennaPod, it's a real gem.
I've been loving LibreTube recently. It doesn't seem go get nearly as much love as other YouTube clients
I recently switched to KISS launcher; it's a bit unorthodox but I like it a lot now that I'm used to it. AntennaPod is good for podcasting too
Love KISS too! Perfect for phones.
KISS is the best launcher. Fast and light.
There's so many:
KeepassDX, newpipe, tusky, open board, Firefox, infinity(not for long sadly), jerboa, jellyfin, si gnal, f-droid, exodus, binary eye. All that on my phone. My computer runs fedora and I'm not changing anytime soon.
edit : forgot KDE connect on the phone as well.
Updater for apps released through GitHub, F-Droid, GitLab, etc.
Patcher for YouTube which adds AdBlock/Sponsorblock/Other various features. Also supports other apps, such as YouTube Music. This is a must if you use YouTube on your phone.
GUI for yt-dlp, which supports so many websites. It can download videos and/or audio, implement sponsorblock to skip intro/outtros, and much more.
Installer for modded Spotify. Includes AdBlock, unlimited skips, and the ability to play any track on demand, using a free Spotify account. (The installer itself includes an ad that plays when downloading the patched APK, but this can be disabled in the settings of xManager)
Feature rich manga reader that can pull from various sources. Some people may recommend using one of the various forks.
Non-root/root system-wide AdBlock solution
FOSS & Privacy friendly call blocker that includes support for blacklist/whitelist with wildcard support.
Storage utility/manager that's actually good, unlike 99.99% of cleaner apps on the play store. Pro version is free on GitHub, make sure to support the developer if you like the app.
Feature rich 4chan app
Feature rich ebook reader. Pro version is free on GitHub, make sure to support the developer if you like the app.
Thank you for all the great recommandations !
Honestly, too many to choose from. My phone is 99% FOSS right down to the icons.
I was very surprised when I came upon this comment. My first thought was when did I write this
Pretty similar names indeed. I did make an account for myself here on Beehaw but I clearly messed up the password. I might send a message to someone to sort that out.
What hardware is your phone?
Firefox - browser Signal - messaging app
Helix? on your android phone? is it a comfortable experience to use a modal text editor on a phone screen ? i kinda wanna try it now. i’m using helix on my desktop.
Oops In didn't read the description, didn't know it was for android specifically 🤣
Yeah I don't use it on android.
I use helix to edit stuff in termux on my phone, I think it's actually pretty usable once you get used to it
Though, it's still text editing on a phone, so I don't know if I'd recommend it
Almost everything what I use is already listed here (Termux, NewPipe, Joplin, etc), so, here's a few small apps that no one has mentioned yet:
ViMusic - a tiny accountless app to stream music from YouTube music.
HTTP Shortcuts - an app that allows you to create home screen shortcuts that execute arbitrary http requests, it supports JavaScript, so, you can write even something pretty complicated.
ViMusic's design looks so cool and creative from the screenshots! I will have to give it a try.
I'll second HTTP Shortcuts. Excellent (and Open Source) app.
Antennapod, KDE Connect, ... way too many to name. F Droid (in my case Neo Store) is a great place to search. If I search for a certain use case, I check out this Github Repo that lists very good FOSS apps
On Windows:
Android:
Probably missed some, but the above are essential to my everyday use.
For sync a la Dropbox, check out Syncthing! I run it in Windows, Linux, Mac, my Synology NAS, and Android. Works amazingly well.
Sounds good, I'll check it out - thanks!
OsmAnd for maps and navigation
I won’t be using Android for a few years till my Apple device dies (best phone is the one you have, right?). However, there is one app that you can use cross platform that I endorse completely: KeePassium .
Has a simple interface, supports password sharing between self hosted servers via standardized KeePass libraries, and has TOTP which eliminates the need for a second app. I use keepassXC on Fedora and it syncs wonderfully. Took a second to setup, but it’s the best password experience I’ve had thus far.
RedReader - a fantastic Reddit app, that hopefully will support Lemmy in the future.
Kubernetes / OKD. Since, via OpenShift, it pays my bills.
screen. Rather helpful for long running stuff if I drop VPN form work.
This is going to be a long list.
VLC, for playing videos and other media.
Auxio, for playing music and organizing playlists and such.
ConnectBot, for SSH.
Shizuku, for apps that support it.
RootlessJamesDSP, for audio stuff. Powered by Shizuku.
aShell, for stuff that requires root permission.
Aurora Store, for the few apps I need from the playstore.
KISS Launcher.
Droidify, for everything I need from F-Droid. Also powered by Shizuku.
Feeder, for RSS feeds.
FTPClient, for SFTP connections.
LibreTorrent, for torrenting and such.
Mull, for web browsing.
Aegis, Bitwarden, OrganicMaps, VLC, Jellyfin, Signal, Infinity, Jerboa, StandardNotes
Aegis is amazing for authenticator codes! I love the backup/restore support. Never going back to Google Authenticator ever since my Pixel 3 bricked itself overnight and I lost all my codes
I like Voice for my audiobooks. Also Newpipe and of course Signal :).
Antennapod for podcasts.
I have lawnchair and the Papirus icons and I also have some of the Simple App suite to replace the propietary file manager, camera, etc.
I also have a reminders app called Habits as well as Revanced, Infinity for Reddit (RIP), and Jerboa.
And for games I have Lichess, Mindustry and Shattered Pixel Dungeon
Oooh, Habits is great! I've been looking for a simple habit tracker for years!
Analyser and display of phone storage space. Extremely useful for me as I tend to take a lot of stuff with me everywhere.
Many of my favourite apps are already listed here, so I won't repeat them
My Expenses: pretty much the best expense tracking and budgeting android application I've had the pleasure of finding, It has some paid plans to enable cloud hosting, a local web server, among others, but the free one was more than enough to me for years.
an open source notes app of course, an opensource keyboard app, there are a lot of good things in those categories. also, back when i read ebooks on my phone i found a really good app called comfort reader that automatically reads books for you and stuff, and there are also other great reading apps
which app for notes and which keyboard ?
Personally I use Orgzly for longform notes because you can easily set a custom repo to have backups sent to, and I use Notally for short notes, to-do lists, and grocery shopping lists.
My most useful is probably ntfy & my matrix client, Element. I self-host ntfy & a matrix dendrite server with some bridges. I am able to receive notifications from all of my chats without Google services installed, as well as notifications from Tusky thanks to Element and Tusky's support for UnifiedPush.
I've been looking for something like this. Looks like I have some reading to do.
Right now, Infinity for Reddit, but with the Reddit API debacle, I guess it's either Jerboa for Lemmy or Firefox Focus.
The one I am using and not already mentioned :
Out of interest why do you use syncthing-fork?
not op but I use the fork too because there are more options and more control when it's running. I have mine set up to turn on for 5mins every hour
OONI Probe
Great for detecting censorship on public WiFi
This is a fascinating project!
On my Android tablet, my most used app has got to be either Mull (web browser, based on Firefox), NewPipe (YouTube client), or Tusky (Mastodon client).
My favourite app, however, is probably UntrackMe.
Phonograph - Music player
Newpipe - Youtube frontend
Husky - Pleroma client
KDE Connect - Desktop connectivity
Tachiyomi - Manga reader
Simon Tatham's Puzzles - Pen and paper-style logic puzzle collection
Tachiyomi is clutch for manga. Best manga app across Android and iOS.
Little File Explorer - It just works.
undefined> Little
This got to be the lightest Android application I ever install. 40Kib... Unbelievable number in the realm of bloated mobile apps.
This is crazy yo! Never heard about it until now and it shocks me!
Standard Notes, if you're ok with just text notes it works good
Also I really like Joplin for open source note taking if you need some richer text
Android
They're both pretty basic but honestly upon switching I realized how many superfluous features I didn't use in my old apps.
My most used is probably Lawnchair, but I don't really use it as much as see its work. Also Notally for notes.
Probably Open Note Scanner OsmAnd and Password Store.
AdAway for Android via fDroid
Wow. I used to use soulseek about 15 years ago. Is it still very active?
Simple Gallery (and the Simple Mobile apps in general), AdAway, SDMaid, Magisk, Firefox.
Nextcloud Notes for notes
Revanced for YouTube, Audacity, KDENlive, VLC, OBS studio, and the *ARR suite of applications.
Edit: I did not see that you said Android. Revanced it is then.
vlc has an android app too! try it out !
I didnt know that. What a GOAT the VLC devs are. Cant believe they've not sold out after all this time.
Revanced isn't open source. the patches are, but the base client is closed.
Newpipe for YouTube.
Yes. I especially love the Newpipe x SponsorBlock fork
