I'm guessing most of the Beehaws at least have duplicates since they cut themselves off.
Do you have the ability to request new books in your library so that that way you could get things you are into? There's also always shadow libraries.
Dude I had no idea implants for chickens existed that's insane. If I ever got chickens we would be matching.
You're probably right - the inflation rates were low for a long time so to get that high from indexation on a 100k loan would be pretty unlikely.
Heresy but I'd eat them if I had rescue hens that weren't interested in eating them. Would probably feed them back their shells though.
Probably medical degrees etc. However, if I were to do a masters in CS it would be 70k so my total debt would be up to something like 110k. Thus, if I do a masters it will be a cheap US-based one I can cashflow because that's just a stupid amount of debt.
Yeah I assume the reason there isn't is because the general ones are US-centric by default and then everyone else has to have somewhere specific to go. But I guess if they want their own dedicated place too why not?
National pride ✨
Cool the world
We're paying them to produce this pollution.
Just read reviews?
A lot of romance novels. Not too surprising I guess.
For the reasons you mentioned about the quietness of it it wasn't really for me. I went into the movie hoping not necessarily for action but for a little more sciencey stuff and it didn't really have that or explain anything. As you said, the sci-fi element is just dressing - it could easily have been set in any other sort of world.
I've read both but Animal Farm was for school so naturally I didn't like it. 1984 was great not just as an interesting read but to understand all of the cultural (and culture war) references to it.
That should definitely be illegal.
I don't think they'll stop until they have the whole historic area of Israel (which includes more than just Palestine.) Crazy that this is allowed.
I feel like Niven just couldn't write people at all (especially women.) He had some cool concepts but I won't be going back to his work.
Blasphemy but you can always Google if you just wanna know one thing but can't finish. I did to the WoT and don't regret it.
The British public’s trust in the political system has fallen significantly since the pandemic, potentially as a result of recent political scandals, according to a report from a leading think tank. Just 6% of the public have full trust in the current political system, while 89% support constitution...
Britons’ trust in politics has fallen significantly since Covid, report finds.
Can't say I'm shocked.
(Cover for the 1967 edition of vol. 1 of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (1965), Robert A. Heinlein) The Portuguese painter and illustrator Lima de Freitas (1927-1998) created a vast number of covers …
The WoK was a 5 star read for me, WoR a 3 star and now I'm struggling to get properly into Oathbringer. I think I'm on chapter 10. Anyone else have this problem? Does it get more interesting or am I just not a Sanderson person?
Sometimes a post will say on Jerboa that there is one comment but on the post none is visible. Is this a problem with Jerboa? Is it because the commenter may not be federated with my instance? Or is it a problem with Lemmy?
Currently in Egypt and they just asked us to pay in USD cash for an added activity but, not being American, we don't have USD. We have the local currency and the ability to get that out at ATMs, but no way to access foreign currency. So annoying but they accepted local in the end.
How would you like to see this place differ from Reddit/TikTok/YouTube etc. as a place to talk about books?
Hi, my X280 just suddenly won't turn on. It was left on a bed alone so no physical damage. When plugged in the charging indicator is solid white after flashing white 3 times. I've tried turning it on with the battery out but plugged in. I've also tried draining the CMOS battery (unplugged CMOS and the battery and held the power button down for 10 seconds before plugging everything back in.)
I'm wondering now if it could be a problem with the power button? The laptop is dual booting Fedora 38 and Windows 11 if that helps and wasn't powered off but went into sleep/hibernation before this behaviour. Is it somehow stuck in sleep mode? I have had some issues with sleep to wake being slow/finicky before.
I have access to a screwdriver set and isopropyl alcohol. What would my next steps be?
Beehaw has decided to defederate from lemmy.world and sh.itjust.works. I believe it was already separated from lemmygrad. I think this makes this community the largest one accessible to the most instances whereas before Literature@beehaw.org was. I guess we'll have to make the most of it!

It's not quite as full-featured as The Storygraph or Goodreads but it covers all of the most important functionalities and it's federated which I appreciate. Something that it is missing Vs either The Storygraph or Goodreads at the moment is volume of reviews (ie. Volume of users.) Unlike many other large subreddits r/books has not made any statements about the API changes. I did try and post something about it but it ended up getting deleted. At 22.1 million users this would be a pretty significant addition to the protest.
Does anyone know why there hasn't been anything official?

For me in SciFi I've been trying to hit some classics so I've read 'The Iron Dream' by Norman Spinrad, 'A Time of Changes' by Robert Silverberg and also the (recent release) 'Out of the Ruins' anthology.
Of those three I enjoyed 'The Iron Dream' the most since I didn't enjoy Silverberg's potraryal of women (and it doesn't seem to have literary intent like in 'The Iron Dream'.) 'Out of the Ruins had some bangers but it was a fairly inconsistent collection for me that mostly hasn't been memorable.
So, what are you currently reading or have recently read?
