Apparently they ditched Gates because she had personality clashes with key members of production staff, so bringing in Diana as a 'female bones' was what they decided to do.
At the time it aired, I wasn't a Pulaski fan and wanted the hot doctor back. As a fully grown adult I far prefer Pulaski's morals and reasoning and detest pretty much any Dr. Crusher focused episode simply because I've come to expect a combination of cognitive dissonance and hypocritical thinking from her character. PIC s3 didn't change my opinion on that.
I think the Pulaski character could have been incredible if they had stuck with her, although on my first watch, I was already attached to Dr. Crusher and was upset that she had been replaced. Given some time and perspective now, I think I would have preferred Pulaski from the start. Diana Muldaur would have knocked that role out of the park.
Credit where it is due, however, I appreciate that they tried to show family dynamics on the Enterprise in TNG. It adds some grounding and realism to Roddenberry's vision of the future (even though the Wesley-focused episodes still make me roll my eyes).
i felt like she was a more mature version of "beverly" with more knowledge, and no-nonsense kind of person.
i heard about gates behind the scenes problems, im not surprised. most of her episode were very gates-fanfictions. i was discussing this a while back on the subs that were talking about the actors, and they dint like "thier Fan' was being badmouth so i recieved a ban from the sub. you can clearly tell by her interview on rosebaums podcast she was up to no good with the set, she still seemed bitter. although shes not too much like the rock, where she was not likeable at all, and cant act. PICARD series did not do the old cast any justice.
im guessing thats why they dint want to seem sexist towards her and gave her " beverly centric episodes" to stroke her ego.(the sleeping with the ghost, her own "universe")
Doctor Pulaski, what a babe!
Dr Pulaski Seekritly Rulez Gang represent
I was one of the few (at least in my irl circle) that actually really liked Pulaski. Obviously we didn't have her for very long, but I felt like her character had actual convictions that she was willing to face consequences over.
Further, she had an actual character development arc, esp re relationship to Data, that I think could've been on par with O'Brien / Bashir if allowed to run its course.
My mild heat take is that the people who (still!) get huffy over the Pulaski character don't understand foils, and probably grumbled over Skyler in Breaking Bad, too.
She was the only main character that didn't ride Picard's dick the whole voyage. Everyone else essentially worships the guy, but Pulaski would tell him to stfu, he doesn't know dick.
beverly's characther just became kind of wierd overtime.
Yeah she was interesting and she challenged the crew while still being on their side
This is kinda off topic, but I need to get it off my chest.
I recently rewatched Breaking Bad again, and my god did I feel sorry for that poor woman. Yes, she made terrible choices and fucked up sometimes, but only because she was lashing out due to the situation Walter had pushed her into.
People who grumble over Skyler either have no heart, or no brain, or both.
Yeah I feel like her behaviour was more relatable, if you actually thought through the situation logically or emotionally.
Just to continue veering dangerously off topic, I thought it was kind of fucked up that so many viewers saw themselves in the Walter White character (notably later in the series)—to the point where they got mad at other characters for reasonably trying to talk him down from his pointless quest for power.
Do love me some Brian Cranston though. Actually, wasn't he supposed to play a villain in a Star Trek movie? Did that ever happen?
If memory serves the only people who did grumble about her on Reddit at the time were deeply misogynistic incels who were very bitter about being told to clean up their room by their mom and channeled all that hatred at Skyler. Also deeply related to Walter white without acknowledging he was not that great of a person some pretty severe ego issues.
Yeah, she really grew on me throughout the season. Yet another really well-written and well-portrayed character.
The number of losers in the comment section of BB video clips hating on Skylar for standing up to Walter is kinda disturbing.
Skyler was the most relatable character of breaking bad. She embodied the ‘not a victim’ mentality to boot.
beverly eventually came back, and dint allow her to develop her actor. im one of the few that actually like her.
I ultimately liked her but that interaction did make that hard for a bit
She hadn't really developed enough as a character to pull something like that off without coming across as a grade A bigot, but I eventually took it as just a blunder on her part and her growth arc was at least well done, and I loved that she ultimately wound up being one of the first to stand up for him and they clearly became friends
Picard he’s also hard in the beginning. He started out way more crotchety grouchy than he ended up being
Yeah the character was bigoted, and as we learned had a chip on her shoulder for a very real reason (she suspected Data of being somehow complicit in the death of her son).
I personally found it refreshing to have a character dealing with trauma in an uglier way than the usual (since everyone else are such upright goodies, the worse they did was self-harm or get depressed), by actually lashing out for once.
But I understand having a bigot in space on the crew somewhat pierces the fantasy of best friends in space solving problems with science and ethics.
