US accuses Germany of 'human rights issues' in new report

The report itself has been accused of political bias, with the Trump administration softening criticism of Israel and El Salvador.

Human rights, such as freedom of expression, are under threat in Germany and other European countries, according to the 2024 Human Rights Report by the US State Department.

The report, which in former years has been seen as a reliable point of reference for global human rights advocacy, has been criticized by human rights groups as containing numerous omissions and mischaracterizations to fit the current US administration's political aims.

Let me get this straight:
Silencing nazis (instead of straight jailing them) is an issue with human rights.
But killing tens of thousands of palestinians it's fine.

Germany certainly has plenty of human rights issues. Nazis being oppressed is not one of them.

But sure, even thinking about doing something about a right-wing party that has been classified as extremist by multiple courts and explicitly lists several human rights violations as their goals... that's a step too far...

- That's far from the only issue. Of course all of the things I'd name (systemic racism, horrible prison conditions, gaps in our "universal" healthcare, dismantling of the social state) are also things the current US administration would be in favour of.
  
  Half of the things you list are things which Germany is one of the best in the world: prison conditions, healthcare, social state. It's not perfect, sometimes is worse than it was 10 years ago, but hardly worth of calling it a "human rights issue" .

Germany is making AFD's life more difficult –> JD Vance is unhappy –> USA concludes that Germany has human rights issues and the issues are that AFD has become more active and Germany should have prevented that from happening. Okay.
Maybe USA should decide whether it's a problem to let AFD do its stuff or if it is a problem to not let AFzs do its stuff? 🙃
