"Free Speech Absolutist" invariably just means "I want to be able to say whatever I want with no repercussions, but believe that nobody else should have that right."
When I protested a couple weeks ago a few people yelled at me at that I didn’t love America… the irony would be hilarious if it wasn’t reflecting a sad reality.
Truth is, Trumpists absolutely do not like free speech.
It’s difficult notion to wrestle with… I never like showing my patriotism and I always read American history very critically (thanks Howard Zinn!) but it’s also the only country I’ve lived in and will probably stay in for the rest of my life. I’m inspired that change can happen (even if it’s bad) in this country and even if is a long and hard path, I guess I can’t say I’ve given up yet. I also have two kids so I gotta try to give them something better.
Some people love their country like a child loves their parent. Perfect, the strongest smartest ever, can do no wrong. Any criticism is an attack and unacceptable.
Some people love their country like a peer. They see their strengths and their flaws, and they want them to grow and improve. Sometimes that means hard conversations and difficult changes. But they do want what's best for them.
I ve been banned from so many social media sites for being critical of capital or defending Luigi that I really appreciate that Lemmy actually cares about free speech
Oh don't be fooled. Lemmy doesn't care about it at all either. If you say the right things they will ban you without a second thought. They just happen to be ok with those things here.
Words doesn't mean anything to fascists. They are perfectly fine with hypocrisy, as long as they see themselves as "winning", then words and reasons doesn't matter. So you can point out blatant hypocrisies by fascists for the rest of your life, because it is baked into their ideology, and it doesn't matter. There is no "gotcha" moment to be had with these people.
