I stopped watching dragon ball after watching it whilst high and realizing how bmany scenes were a slow zoom on a few repeated frames accompanied by the voice actor sounding like they're aggressively dealing with a stopped bowel.
It's a similar problem with any of the "endless" anime. It's virtually impossible to sustain an interesting and coherent story over hundreds of episodes, so they almost inevitably have those annoying tropes they fall back on.
I know they're popular but I pretty much die on the hill that there hasn't been a good anime that has more than about 150 episodes (yes, that includes Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, DragonBall, etc).
Psyduck is so relatable. Just a simple duck, who's intelligent enough to understand how fucked the world is, but also intelligent enough to know there's not a damn thing he can do about crippling depression, and oppression of the masses into life swallowing poverty.
And he has the empathy to feel how dragged down the weight of the world is around him. He knows that people are having a hard time, and they look to pokemon to feel better. They're looking to HIM to feel better. Oh man. That's a lot of pressure.
People can't buy homes, health insurance is being denied, we're on the edge of world war 3, and all anyone wants is a reason to smile, and now they look at psyduck, to cheer them up. One simple pokemon with anxiety and mental health issues is now being asked to lift the weight of the world, as it comes crushing down on us all. And I can relate to that.
I don't know what it is about this show, but there are moments that cause me to get chills that travel up and down my spine. Like Gohan confidently marching toward Cell with his one handed Kamehameha. Or Frieza realizing he pushed Goku a bit too far. The only other show or movie that has done that was maybe the first Matrix. Which.. if you think about it, contains very similar ideas. That being the only limit to your power is the one you place on yourself.
I can't help but tie this theme to lucid dreaming. In your dreams, you can have all these powers, but first, "You have to let it all go. Fear, doubt, and disbelief. Free your mind."
