I still don't get why Temu is so popular... Sure everything is like $0.49, but it's all junk that is either already broken when it arrives or will break within a week of using it if it works at all. What's the point?

  I was going to say something to that effect. It feels like people are more into the experience of shopping rather than the actual product.
  I’m starting to feel old-school in that I’m happy to pay more (sometimes much more) for a quality product that will last.
  It frustrates me that it’s hard to find answers to questions about products before you buy them and that most information seems to be scammy affiliate links blogs.

  But what's the point of getting $0.49 worth of junk that doesn't work? That's the part I don't get. It's like we're paying them to send us their garbage so they don't have to deal with it lol
  
  It's cheaper to ship products into the USA from China than it is to send a package to a neighbor. This is because it is subsidized with US tax dollars because China is a "developing nation."
- The app is designed like TikTok + scammy ad type deals + gambling. You are supposed to get addicted to using it, not to buy the things you want
  
  Ah, you just described average chinese ecommerce app. Fuckloads of ads, check-ins, roulette and sometimes straight up prompting fishy microcredit deals. They even put live streaming into food service app, some merchants in meituan(chinese uber eat) has a popup of live stream when you enter their page... Chinese apps are just TERRIBLE.
- I could understand getting some cheap crap occasionally. Maybe once or twice a year. Sometimes I don't mind something that's really cheap if it's cool enough.

- Temu itself I don't recommend but Aliexpress has been around for over 10 years and I buy lots of electronics parts from it. I have a collection of Pi Pico clones I got for $3 each. I do use them up semi frequently because I make controllers with them. Other things I get are momentary switches, LEDs, wire etc.
  People use these marketplaces wrong IMO. They look for the listing with the lowest price and complain when it doesn't last as long as something 4x the price. You can absolutely buy perfectly good parts and products but you have to buy from reputable sellers and Chinese brands, and people seem to prefer buying the cheapest junk they see.
  
  Just don't buy anything of value. I thought I'd save $30 buying a mtb dropper post direct from aliexpress instead of resellers on amazon. Fedex delivered it to the wrong address and the seller refused to file a claim with fedex and I couldn't because I was receiving not shipping. Customer support sided with the seller because the label was marked 'delivered' and I was out $70.

not really related: lifted truck in our neighborhood randomly caught on fire

No idea how, my guess is the cold weather caused static electricity, but I'm not a truck engineer so that could be totally wrong lol
- Lifted truck owners are not exactly the most safe folks when it comes to doing their own work, and I've seen a lot of videos of the wiring these people do. I'd be willing to bet the cause was unfused wiring done by the owner.
