It's weird to me that vanilla and chocolate have a similar history and applications but vanilla got designated as plain and boring at some point.
It's because the way most places and brands did vanilla WAS super plain and boring back when there was like two or three flavors.
It's like John Oliver described Neapolitan ice cream: "vanilla for the squares, strawberry for the perverts, and chocolate for the rest of us."
Those and sometimes nougat (which was actually just vanilla with small pieces of nougat) if you were lucky.
