Grade school literature was depressing
Specifically thinking about The Little Match Girl and To Build a Fire
I believe "The Giver" has been overlooked.

But he didn't freeze to death. There are sequels to The Giver. Gathering Blue isn't a direct sequel but in the same universe. I forget the name of the actual sequel.
I learned something today. What I remember was him pulling up a pleasant memory as he was slowly freezing to death.
Wait till they read winter reports about poverty and houselessness.

I had to read hatchet, which comes close if I recall.
Hatchet was great! Still a favorite to this day! Sort of, MC was in a plane crash and has to do survival stuff and basically learn it all ad-libbed.
I had to read a book about rape in school called "Speak" it was pretty messed up and I don't think it had all that good an ending either

To build a fire is so good! Would highly recommend it to anyone that is familiar with 'The Cremation of Sam McGee'
Where the red fern grows, tuck everlasting, z for Zachariah; a ton of suffering and death in so many lit books but don’t say it too loudly or they’ll ban them too for teaching folks how to deal with loss and painful endings.
