Boeing allegedly overcharged the military 8,000% for airplane soap dispensers
  • Cool I'm so glad I got wildly overpriced soap dispensers on planes I'll never board for the fucking huge chunk of cash our useless fucking government takes from me instead of healthcare, or roads that aren't full of potholes, or properly functioning public transit, I love this country and my life

  • FAA finalizes rules that will apply to air taxis • The Register
  • Agreed. Seems like it's just tech bro clickbait to call them air taxis though. I sincerely doubt that will ever happen with how risk averse the FAA is. All that happened was the FAA released regulations on this new class of VTOL aircraft.

  • /home dir on a separate partition? Why/Why not?
  • People are talking about config issues doing this. When I do a reinstall, I just backup my dotfiles and let them rebuild. I usually don't have to restore many of them, just for a few apps I know I want the config for.

  • X's controversial changes to blocking and AI training saw half a million users leave for rival Bluesky in just a single day
  • I disagree, I just think some kind of engagement algorithm would be better. I haven't used bluesky or threads so I can't speak to them. I'm just saying that back in the day on twitter, I had no problem finding a bunch of very funny and clever posts, and posts were catered to me well. Through both me following people and I assume through the engagement algorithm. I've tried adding a bunch of hashtags, but I'm not finding a bunch of hilarious stuff to send to my friends like I did back then on twitter.

Bunch of spam too, because bots use the hashtags, so I'm often scrolling through a bunch of auto-posted stuff. Idk. Maybe I'm using it wrong. I just feel like your average person isn't going to go through all that crap so they'll cling to twitter until it dies.

And I've tried switching instances around, which is just confusing honestly, and didn't really help with finding lots of content that I want to see. I used mastodon more when I was able to mirror people I know are funny on twitter to my mastodon feed lol. I want to like it, I just find I'm never tempted to go on it. Can't figure it out.

  • Is there a way to completely block users from an instance? Comments and posts? (Technical question)

Howdy, so while I'm able to block all posts from hexbear.net accounts, it seems there's no way for me to block all their comments on instances they're federated with. I'd rather not leave some of the communities that are still federated with them, but I would like to be able to block or hide all of their comments in the threads.

Is there any way to do this yet? Or do I just need to move to an instance that's defederated from them?

Gettin real goddamn tired of dogs

I like dogs like I like toddlers. It's fun to hang out with other people's for a while, but ultimately they're annoying, loud, and make a mess. I feel like in the past 10 years or so, dog owners have become increasingly convinced that everyone thinks their slobbering, untrained mutt is god's gift to everyone, and expects everyone to love it unconditionally. Dogs in restaurants. Dogs in stores when you go shopping. "Oh it's so funny that your dog is jumping on me and getting it's dirty paws all over me while it tries to sniff my crotch." "Oh oops! Your dog ate my food off the counter, fucking again. Guess that's my fault because in this house nothing is safe from the coddled fucking dog." "Hey man can you watch the dog? It's really easy, not like it pisses all over the floor and knocks the trash over or anything. We have to leave the house for 2 hours and it has anxiety/depression/borderline personality disorder and he's a wittle special boy who needs constant attention."

I'm just tired of it. Nobody gives a goddamn about your stupid dog. Stop bringing your animal to restaurants, it's disgusting and inconsiderate. It's not your child, it's a dog. Dog people have made me hate dogs.

Brand new baby DM, just wanted to post somewhere because I'm excited (minor DOSWI spoilers)

I've always been interested in trying the game, but didn't know anyone who could DM. I became really interested in playing a few months ago, and decided, fuck it, I'll do it myself. I just ran Dragons of Stormwreck Isle last night with a few friends, all of us completely brand new to D&D. I hit one snag where a player was prying for more information about Varnoth's history. They rolled really well, and Varnoth isn't necessarily guarded about her past, but I had NOTHING more to give them. The module had no more history, and I don't know the world well, so just trying to make up some lore on my feet was really difficult. I tried to give more jargon, didn't sound great, and just ended up making her tell the player that there wasn't much more to say, and that she'd moved on from that time in her life. This stuck out to me as a failure on my part, but after the session, I told the player about how it looked from my end and they didn't seem to have noticed that I was fumbling. They just assumed I had everything out in front of me. So I guess the improv was decent enough, and least for my completely inexperienced players. Anyone have tips on what to do when a player wants more information that an NPC should know, but it isn't something you'd prepared for?

I'll have to learn the rules a little better (the first encounter with the zombies featured 5 minutes of me leafing through the PHB because I ran into an important mechanic I didn't quite understand), and I should probably prep the story a little better too, but I'm beyond pleased at how successful the session was. Everyone had a great time and wants to keep playing. It was a ton of fun improvising and creating a fun goofy story together with my buds. Just very happy to have this new fun creative thing to do with my friends and want to share that joy. I'd really like to create my own stories eventually, but it does seem very daunting.

Anyway, thanks so much for all of your help! Reading through posts in this community has been invaluable to learning how to play and DM.

[Meta] Hashtags to follow for good shitposting/meme/humor content?

I don't think it's any secret that there's a bit of a stuffy vibe on Mastodon. Does anyone have recommendations for hashtags they follow that pull more lighthearted content into their feed?

Are any tools still available to migrate followers from Twitter to Mastodon?

Or have I missed the train on this? I know services like twitodon.com were available to find users on Mastodon that an account is following on Twitter. But it looks like with the API goofiness, those services are shut down. Is there any way to do this now?

    The Wand is amazing

I've had a model M for a couple years, and I was using the Orion 2 induction heater for maybe a year. I've always been disappointed with the Orion. Heating is too fast and uneven, and a torch has always been superior to it. BUT I just recently bought the omnivap along with the Wand, and good god. It's fantastic. Just as effective as a torch, I can just stick the vape in and let it heat up, it's such a huge upgrade. I've been using the Mighty from Storz and Bickel for years, but the Wand honestly might make the omnivap my new daily desktop vape. Highly recommend.

Are there any Twitter mirrors that still work?

Basically, title. I'm trying to follow some of my favorite accounts on Twitter through mastodon since it would make transitioning much easier, but I can't find a Twitter mirror that actually displays any posts. Did I just miss the train on this?

    Community Blocklist?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I can't seem to find the answer online. Is there any way for the users of an instance to see which communities have been blocked by the instance? I know we can see the instance blocklist, I'm interested in the community blocklist.
