[SOLVED!] On an Android phone is there an open source method of compressing files?
  • Any photo editor will do. Just load it in and export as JPEG or smaller resolution.

    On f-droid:

Pocket Paint is crashy for me, but it gets the job done.

Imagepipe has a bit clunky interface but just to load and export it works fine. Its primary advertised purpose is to remove metadata from photos, so not a bad thing to have on hand anyway.

  • Archiving Lemmy instances
  • Well since posts are numbered sequentially, you could archive all of them by generating the links. Tiny issue is, this would include every post that was federated with the server, which is almost 2 million it seems. A bit overkill for a relatively small instance.

I think if you filter by local on the main page and click next until you get to the end, there aren't that many pages. You could save those with outlinks.

Also, I believe, the posts will live on on other instances regardless.

  • Can I skip updates?
  • Sources vary, and admittedly I didn't research this thoroughly, but even old articles say that flash memory (which is what almost all smartphones use, I think) is expected to work for 10,000 or 100,000 complete writes. That is just sooo much data, even if your phone only has 16GB or something

You should research more on this, and decide if it will be fine for you for the next X years you wish to use this phone.

  • Can I skip updates?
  • AFAIK LineageOS updates supply the whole system every time, that's why it's always so large. You should be fine skipping a couple. (fine in this way anyway)

That being said, I really doubt you could ever write enough data to harm the mass storage or RAM of your device before you have to switch phones because it stops being supported, or you drop it on concrete, etc.

  • [Poll] What should be Lemmy's default way of displaying votes?
  • A smartass and wrong! You obviously messed up thinking OP's initial upvote wouldn't count towards the percentage. The correct formula is n + 2 upvotes for n downvotes, which makes 0.5 < (n+2) / (2n + 2) < 0.505, solve for the smallest possible n₀ = 100, giving us 102 + n upvotes and 100 + n downotes

  • Have you ever had a phone's flashlight LED just fail?

When the phone was otherwise in a working condition.

    how to use putty

Hello Windudes. I have a friend I want to play minecraft with. He said he would host the server. He's great like that. It's also good because my machine is pretty old and only has 32 gigs of ram so it's running really slow now. Anyway he said he didn't want to get hacked by porting the forwards or something so he said I would need to create a tunnel or sometginh. He said I have to open up "cmd" so I did and this window popped with all this text. This is when I said fuck no. I am not a prpgrammer or something. He was being a real asshat saying I just needed to copy paste in this one line or whatever so I ended the skype call right there. Anyway I went to bing.com and typed in the stuff he said "ssh tunnel" to see if a real program existed that could do it for me (i think he was just trying to flex on me with his computer skills trying to make me do all that shit) so there the microsoft ai told me putty invented that tunnel so I went to the first result putty.org that site looks like ass guys I think it's scam so I just went to the next one softonic to download it. I got through the wizard and now I have it installed. I think it's glitchy because now my nvidia card is always really loud but whatevey I just want to play minecraft. can someobe please tell me how to connect to my friends server

    What's up with her?

Yeah she's a bit eccentric and really, really horny, but does she really belong with the others? She's never shown to be unstable like the rest.
