  • [Advice] On Home Server Hardware

I'm looking into to building a small media server. I will be th only user of it. So I don't need the ability to do simultaneous streams. I am planning on running Jellyfin.

Sense I am on a more limited budget I was thinking and older desktop and transcoding my files (on my powerful desktop) to be best supported and play smoothly.

Are there any specific recommendations you guys have for hardware I should keep a look out for that's cheaper or other recommendations for cheap hardware?

  • Think that pisses me off the most is how you can't uninstall it. First of all, I don't even really need a mail app on my computer. If I do, I'll install one I actually want to use.

  • Nearly 300 apply as French university offers US academics ‘scientific asylum’
  • I was hoping a European country would do this but it also does not boad well for how unstable America is.

  • Bluesky has started honoring takedown requests from Turkish government
  • That's so dumb of Bluesky. They should provide ways for poeple to get around it or point to resources that explain how.

I STRONGLY disagree with this move. Once you give into one country it can way to easily lead to others (with more power) also trying.

  • LG TVs’ integrated ads get more personal with tech that analyzes viewer emotions
  • If they ever make this a standard feature in all TVs and make it where I can't just disconnect it from the internet, I will be using old TVs for the rest of my life.

My TV is there to display a visual output. It does not and should not do anything else.

  • Blahaj Zone matrix space for gender diverse folk (now with corrected links)
  • It functions in about the same way. It won't look exactly the same but it is as you said the best "decentralized" alternative to Discord. Besides initial setup, it shouldn't be hard to use.

  • Says the guy from the party who made decisions that led to Trump getting elected.

  • You probably use an iphone too, don't you?
  • I do that especially on Android. If I didn't have to use certain apps for work/school I would be set. I have found that so many FOSS apps work better, are smaller, don't sell my data, and just work.

  • Donald Trump signs order to 'make America's showers great again'
  • I have a few thoughts. First I feel like he just has issues with HIS shower I haven't noticed my showers being "woke". Second can Trump focus 100% on this nothing else? This is one of the much less damaging things he could do

  • "4chan is a simple image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images anonymously."
  • Funny you say that. I despise Nord VPN and consider them HIGHLY unethical. Also they aren't truly private because they want a bunch of infromation when signing up.

Any VPN that I see a lot of ads for and other content for makes them come off as sketchy.

  • Bluesky has started honoring takedown requests from Turkish government
  • I don't get why they listened to the Turkish government. There not (to my understanding) registered there or have any kind of assests there.

  • "4chan is a simple image-based bulletin board where anyone can post comments and share images anonymously."
  • TBH, if you just use a decent VPN (thats truly private) then this doesn't matter. Which is something you should be doing anyways.

  • What do you think will the tech bros jump on next?
  • I very sadly don't see it going anywhere because of how much money has been invested by big tech corporations such as Google, Amazon, and Microsoft.

Reason they're willing to put so much money into these corporations is because they're being built on their cloud infrastructure, which the different AI companies pay for. So either way, they end up getting more money and becoming more influential, even if the AI hype eventually dies out.
