  • I completely forgot "lemmings" 😅😅

I've probably actually seen that one more, I don't know how I forgot it lol

  • I'm also open to thoughts on "lemmites"! Its what I default to but I suppose it may be presumptuous for me to assume its what everyone uses, or wants to use :)

  • Super interesting, thanks for posting!

  • I think this is a fair argument. I'm not sure if I see "being mean to them" as necessarily playing out this way, or being the best way to achieve that end (one can have no respect without being insulted/verbally attacked. Creating a stronger "us vs them" has explicit risks to our communities), but I can see the point you're making

I appreciate the sincere answer :) hope you have a lovely day!

  • There are lots of ways in which modified GNOME is an excellent experience 😅

Its good to acknowledge that lack of customization is a central tradeoff of its design, but if they don't know whether what they need is possible, it's entirely valid for them to ask. Telling them not to do what they need and use something else seems unlikely to be a helpful contribution to the discussion.

For all they know there's an easy way to do exactly what they need, or a well maintained extension that will fill their usecase perfectly. From other replies it seems like they may have already gotten a really useful answer

  • Generative ai sucks ass and I personally hate it, but could we not kneejerk downvote legitimate and incredibly impactful medical technology just because "AI" is used in the headline?

It's not even genetative ai. This kind of tech probably better labeled machine learning to convey its technological distinction from gen ai.

This is a good thing. It's a good thing that will help people. The word "AI" doesn't change the fact that it's a good thing that will help people 😅

  • Tuta free has been treating me nicely. I like the folks behind it and when I opened an issue with the bug I was experiencing with the app they fixed it like immediately, and that was pretty cool.

I believe it was a known issue, so the solution may have been planned or in the works already, but it was a nice interaction with the devs, and I like the ethos with which they run things :)

  • I'm just commenting for engagement, I hope you get a useful answer! :)

  • Absolutely!

  • That depends a lot of what the fears are and how you do it.

It has to be exposure to the stuff you're trying to challenge your anxiety about, and you should work up to it slowly.

A game with heights might be helpful for a phobia of heights if employed correctly, but a game with space monsters jumping out at you is unlikely to challenge social anxiety, or generalized anxiety. It has to be exposure to the thing you're actually afraid of, not just fear itself.

Reading about exposure therapy, especially related to your particular challenges, would be a good starting point

  • I really like this one :)

  • I know no one is going to like this, but sincere question- how does being mean to cops make any of our issues better?

Like interfering with their ability to get things done, recording their interactions with the public, etc seem productive. But empty antagonism seems like a good way to inspire greater antipathy for the public that makes issues worse... At least with being mean to ice (who, to be fair, are also cops) it seems more likely the public disdain for them is a large enough amount of the population to make them feel ashamed of themselves, helped along by that fact their actions are more clearly abhorrent at an individual scale, making it easer for those voices to impact them.

But I think with regular cops it's too easy for them to still think of themselves as good guys doing an important service, and I don't see "being mean to them" as likely to actually have an positive impact on the issues we're facing

I would be open to thoughts on how it would make things better though! Just because I don't how it would help doesn't mean it necessarily wouldn't, but intuitively it seems to me like it'd be counter productive in most cases

  • Rarely do you see something more fitting for this comm 😅

  • I believe futo keyboard might be more "source available" than open source, but it's still a great app! (I'm typing with it now and it's my favorite more open keyboard app I've used :)

If you want to use another keyboard app like the fantastic FOSS Heliboard, you can also just use the futo voice input app as a voice input provider :)

Futo apps are available through their own f-droid repo if you wanna install/update through an f-droid client- I figured I'd mention that just in case you go searching for it and don't see it since it's not in one of the common repos

  • James Edwin Yokeley Jr. — the 66-year-old Republican chairman of the Surry County, North Carolina, Board of Elections — faces serious criminal charges after authorities in Wilmington, North Carolina, revealed he allegedly slipped illegal drugs into his granddaughters' ice cream.

According to Raleigh, North Carolina NBC affiliate WRAL News, on August 8, Yokeley approached a Wilmington police officer and claimed his two juvenile granddaughters had discovered two suspicious pills in ice cream they’d purchased from Dairy Queen on Oleander Drive.

However, surveillance video later revealed that Yokeley himself was seen placing the pills into both of the girls’ treats. The pills reportedly tested positive for MDMA and cocaine, as noted in an arrest warrant. The authorities said they have evidence he slipped drugs into the girls' ice cream.

According to the report, neither child consumed the drugs; the pills were promptly sent to a state laboratory for further confirmation.

Yokeley has since been booked on multiple felony counts, including contaminating food or drink with a controlled substance, possession of Schedule I narcotics, and child abuse. He posted a $100,000 secured bond after his arrest and transport to the New Hanover County Detention Center, per the report.

For anyone else who might be having trouble :)

  • Thanks for the suggestion. I'd wanted something FOSS but maybe itd be better to at least learn on something sensible. I really wanted to make freecad work, but man was it a rough way to try and learn parametric cad 😅

  • I don't have energy to engage presently but it makes me happy to see folks having this conversation here on Lemmy :)

Thanks for taking the time to organize your thoughts and make a discussion post!

  • FreeCAD has made me wanna cry every time I try to learn it. Next time I'm gonna just try a parametric plugin for blender, my needs are pretty basic

  • I think the people who hate the rich and the people who get actually rich usually aren't the same people 😅

    Just my take/perspective

  • Glad I could help 😊
