First post - what is this community about and is the name suitable?

  • I'd be happy to moderate with others.

I'd like to put to the broader community what name they'd like to call it to see the response and ideas that come along. I'll do a more detailed and clear description/proposal that I could run past you or just put it up on the Australia community. Whatever you suggest. Lemmy is new to me so I'll probably need guidance in the beginning with the admin stuff.

  • I'm fine with that. Let's wait till the admins respond.

Also, once they do, and if they think it'd be worthwhile, should a post be put on the 'Australia' thread to let people know more broadly that this is being proposed? This would be to gauge interest and to see if someone can come up with a great name for the community.

  • I thikk a lot of the warmer ‘heart’ topics require sharing more personal information than a large section of the lemmy users are willing to participate in.

It is an experiment. You don't have to give away super intimate information just because you are interested in topics that can support people in their personal lives, especially in an increasingly constrained but also disconnected society. For example, I am deeply interested in the health and welfare of children (as well as the environment) but I no longer have children in my personal life.

I see a risk of the proposed community falling into a superficial lifestyle magazine type of thing. You know like the ‘5 best pasta dishes for a cheap night in’ type articles.

Ha ha, don't pastafy the concept 😜 (btw, there is a food community here already). If from the beginning it were made clear that shallow, silly content was not the intent but that it is to provide current understanding and research on health, sociological, psychological topics as they affect people in their personal lives would this make it sound less sloppy?

What I’ve done with communities I’ve wanted to contribute in large ways to is search for a list of sources.

The area covered by this hypothetical community is far too broad to give a list of sources. I imagine these would emerge just from the posts put up by people, including for example, the reliable 'The Conversation', Guardian, mastheads and a plethora of organisations.

If this community were to start and I were to be a moderator (as you've suggested elsewhere) I would ask what genuine topics people here would be interested in and take some cues from that as well as put up articles that I find relevant. People may not be interested at all and that's fine but I believe it's fair to give them an opportunity to think of a new possibility.

  • Not necessarily but perhaps yes if it were put up by someone whom the information had helped. The community, if one got established, would indicate the kinds of topics they'd find useful and/or interesting. You're making it look like a cheap self-help group and that might put people off.

  • Could be on ways to look after your health at different stages of life, on family activities, on dealing with toddlers or teenagers, on strengthening relationships, on children and education, on asking where you might find help/support for particular issues from other people who may have experienced similar situations. Those sorts of topics.

My sense (and I could be mistaken) is that Aussie Zone is pretty head-oriented and that it might be worth adding something more heart-centred.

I enjoy the topics I find on Aussie Zone very much. It's great to see the thoughtful and intelligent comments the majority of people make but there seems to be a lack of comments where people get into the more personal areas of living.

  • Did you see 7.30 on ABC tonight? One of the flotilla members explained her experience. https://iview.abc.net.au/video/NC2601H081S00 She said when they got back to Turkiye some of them were hospitalised etc. and said the flotilla lawyers had the documentation showing proof of injuries. Ferguson said at the end that no Australian consular staff in Turkiye had been asked for help with medical assistance.

They now need to show that documentation because as you know Israel says the crew were treated legally. Australians 'out there' who distance themselves from knowing about the commonplace brutal reality that happens in Israeli-occupied territory need to see that even Westerners can be treated in humiliating and abusive ways by Israeli authorities, even though it is only a fraction of what Palestinians are subjected to.

  • Perhaps, or perhaps she would come up against a community whose people stand up for each other and whose work keeps the country fed despite terrible conditions and who don't 'bludge' on the welfare system. I am not cranky with you, just with the thought that someone could come up with the conclusion you describe.

  • I agree with you but it's scientific research in order to find out how this particular type of content affects people. We have to at least do what we can protect those who are vulnerable.

You can see how the big picture affects the particular but also how the particular affects the general. By changing and/or becoming more conscious of the particular we can become more alert to the wider world and make changes there too. Nothing is simple.

  • Agree.

But that requires buy-in from the electorate and allowing time and energy for politics when instead we’re all just greedy and over worked out over consuming.

Which in itself is part of the programming: "be, buy, have, own" etc
