  • I think that using large language models to summarize email (especially marketing), news, social media posts or any type of content that uses a lot of formulaic writing is going to generate lots of errors.

The way I understand large language models, they create chains of words statistically, based on "what combination is the most likely based on my training material"?

In marketing emails, the same boilerplate language is used to say very different things. "You have been selected" emails have similar wording to "sorry this time you have not won but...". Same cheery "thanks for being such a wonderful sucker" tone and 99% similar verbiage except for a crucial "NOT" here and there.

  • At this point writing "baselessly" after Trump's claims is just redundant. We live in a post-facts world now where what's true is decided based on how many people can be convinced of it. It's Truth made Social... It's... Wait... Oooh Truth Social... now I get it!

  • Plot twist: Trump and Musk are secretly champions of Liberalism and Democracy who, striving to strengthen again our antibodies against fascism and populism, decide that the world needs new villains to unite against and selflessly sacrifice themselves.

As the two grow frustrated from the weak reactions, their antics become increasingly over-the-top to the point of caricature.

    • I ran on a platform of insulting everyone and they elected me. Including most of the ones I was directly threatening with deportation
    • yeah, I did a f*ing Nazi salute right at your inauguration. Twice, to make sure it got caught on video
    • ha good one! I said I'd annex Canada and Greenland. Oh, and that I'd turn Gaza into a great resort!
    • Sh#t, that was a good one, surely there's a crowd with pitchforks out there now? No? The f*k is wrong witth these people!?
  • Yes it's a particularly dumb slogan when most of their common "plan" is about destroying Europe. They are basically saying "can we go back to hating and periodically invading each other?".

These guys are united by their dislike of each other. Which is fair enough, because I really dislike every single one of them too. I just wish instead of all this talking they mounted on their horses and jousted, like back then when Europe was, you know... great?

  • The full quote in the article is

I’ve said before and I’ll say it again: the problem with Rory and people like him is that he has an IQ of 110 and thinks he has an IQ of 130. This false arrogance drives so much elite failure over the last 40 years

So, Vance seems to be saying thati Stewart is above average but the problem is that he thinks he's almost a genius. The "false arrogance" bit, though... So Stewart is only pretending to be arrogant and he's actually a pretty down to earth guy who does not think he's a genius? Overall pretty solid bromance thing going between those two!

  • Tariffs seem to be Trump's go-to move nowadays. "Grab them by the wallet".

    • To Putin: stop the war or tariffs!
    • To Europe: buy more US oil or tariffs!
    • To Denmark: gimme Greenland or tariffs!
    • To Melania (probably): pretend you can still bear being in the same room with me or tariffs!
    • McDonald's - "cash or card, sir?" "Tariffs!"
  • I meant something even more radical than translating language. This is Google maps changing borders for disputed territories depending on what side of the dispute the user is: https://theweek.com/speedreads/451127/google-maps-changes-chinas-borders-based-viewers-locations .

I imagine Apple has similar policies too where they adhere to local regulations or just don't want to piss their users in any country, so they just show everyone what the want to see.

So yes, they do have the tools to do it and on top of that they also have a consolidate tradition of doing it.

  • I don't know... Isn't naming (and even country boundaries) already localized based on where the users are? Isn't a possible scenario that Apple and others could show Gulf of America to US users and Gulf of Mexico to everyone else without even spending too much effort?
