How to remove smell from lunch box?
  • This is my go to for things that I can easily move around. It works well and minimizes use of chemical cleaning agents.

  • UV light, works best during the summer.

  • Americans, what are your plans if Trump wins in 2024?
  • The "stick head in sand" method has become extremely popular and it is a serious problem.

  • General Discussion Thread: November 2023
  • Thread for December is now up.

  • Argentina elects 'shock therapy' libertarian Javier Milei as president
  • And here I was enjoying the conversation, despite knowing I wouldn't convince you. Thanks for ruining it.

  • Argentina elects 'shock therapy' libertarian Javier Milei as president
  • "those same wealthy capitalists are the ones calling the shots in the first place"

That's a good reason to take money out of the hands of the state.

  • Argentina elects 'shock therapy' libertarian Javier Milei as president
  • "...tying a State’s sovereign fiat money to a commodity belongs in the dustbin of history."

I've got to ask, what makes you say this? Especially when scarcity is one of the most critical properties of money, and the governments of the world have shown their willingness to print money infinitely. Which makes modern, unbacked, Fiat currencies virtually worthless in the long run.

  • Argentina elects 'shock therapy' libertarian Javier Milei as president
  • Bitcoin does present a possible solution to the monetary woes of Argentina.

Mileis election signals a growing awareness that central bankers are just scammers and getting off the gold standard was one of the biggest mistakes humanity ever made.

  • I'm happy to briefly address those for you. For starters I'm only referring to Bitcoin, and not other "crypto".

    • The base layer is indeed "to slow and expensive" to make day to day purchases such as coffee. However layer 2 applications built on top of the base layer, such as the lighting network, enable nearly instant transactions extremely cheaply.
    • Bitcoin solves many problems with existing currencies, all you have to do is look to countries with failed economic systems. Or the billion people around the world who lack access to even the most basic financial services, such as banking. You may not see a use for it but people living under failed regimes do.
    • This is much more complicated and it's difficult to explain the advantages of securing a monetary system with energy in a concise way so I'll instead say this. The energy necessary to secure the network is indeed a cost, but without a complete understanding of Bitcoin you cannot evaluate if it is outweighed by the benefits. Of course I believe the benefits far outweigh the cost.

    Hopefully that helps.

  • Did you read the report I linked?

  • For anyone who is interested here is a report from Fidelity that provides a fairly concise analysis of Bitcoin and it's value proposition.

    https://www.fidelitydigitalassets.com/sites/default/files/documents/1012662.3.0 Bitcoin First Revisited_Final.pdf

I encourage everyone to take the time to read at least the first few pages, I think you'll be surprised by what you find.

  • It's not a paradox
  • I'm glad you put the effort in, it's the only way humanity can improve upon itself.

I agree with what you've said and think this graphic agrees with you as well. I don't believe it implies that violence should be used against the intolerant but rather that action should be taken to remedy intolerance.

However I do see what you mean, as it's phrasing doesn't preclude violence either and could be further refined to highlight that point.

  • There's a lot of technical answers being proposed but you really need to keep in mind your target audience. Do they actually care how it works at all, or are they less technically minded.

Take the email comparison, it makes an excellent example for people who know how email works but most people don't know so it's not helpful as a comparison to them.

For the layman it's probably best to stick to a simple description, such as: The Fediverse is community organized social media, it works the same as Reddit/Twitter but it's not owned by any company. There are a few extra steps when you first sign up, but it's well worth it for the extra control you get.

  • So far I've found it too be great. Currently using Wallet of Satoshi, which was super easy to set up. Payments are pretty much instant and haven't had any problems at all.

For now I'm just using it to throw people some sats on nostr for good content, but I'm sure my usage will grow as adoption continues.

  • I just went over to your anime instance for less then a minute and found 3 images sexualizing children. Loli content is CSAM.

  • Governments subsidize wars by printing "money"
  • You seem to have a fundamental misunderstanding of monetary systems and methods of governance. You do not need to print money to provide those services, tax revenue is more then enough to cover all critical infrastructure and support systems.

"There is also no downside to it, if you keep it under control."

It is never kept under control, name one nation where money printing hasn't run rampant due to corruption.

I doubt I'll convince you here but i'd encourage to to take a deeper look at why you believe this. As you do keep in mind that many foundational aspects of mainstream economic theory have been proven wrong by other scientific disciplines such as psychology.
