  • There's your problem, the pixels since the pixel 5 have been dogshit for battery life. My wife had a bunch of problems with her 6, so we traded for a 7. Same problems. My pixel 3 was one of my best phones and I knew a bunch of people with 4s who loved them. Seems like since the 5 it's been nothing, but issues. Then they introduced their tensor chip which is just an overheating battery sucker.

  • I was upset about the SMS thing as well. I also switched to Google messenger app on my phone for SMS/RCS. While they do have encryption in transit, I'm pretty sure it's not encrypted at rest on the server side like signal is.

  • From what I understand, SMR is fine for NAS as long as you aren't doing a lot of reads. Like hosting a multimedia server that pulls videos and stuff from the NAS. I recently stood up a TrueNAS server a few months ago with SMR WD disks and it works fine for my use case. It's RAIDed and backed up to cloud storage. I'm now looking into standing up a media server, but I won't use that NAS storage for that.

  • Reddit obviously. Pretty much any corpo controlled social media in general though. Deleted my FB account about 5-6 years ago and never looked back. Deleted my barely used Twitter account after muskrat took over.

Blizzard. Haven't played a Blizzard game since 2012 ish. I was deployed and would play WoW in my downtime until a major update came out and completely broke me, blizzard was no help in the multiple tickets that I submitted. Tried every fix I could find on the internet at the time. I asked them if they could send me an install disc, I'd even pay for it. Hard no from blizzard. It was clear they didn't care about a long time player like me. That was it for them. Now over the years we have seen all of the scandals and games rampant with microtransactions. I'll never play another one of their games unless I pirate the shit out of it.

I'm becoming increasingly intolerant to all of the tech price increases so I've been ramping up my self hosting capabilities. I just need time which is a hard commodity to come by for me anymore. This is really the only thing preventing me from cancelling Netflix right now because Netflix is easy for my kid to access across devices.

I have wanted to cancel Amazon for months now, but that's a battle I've lost to the wife. She gets everything on there. I've tried the argument that we can just order stuff when we have a cart over $25 for the free shipping. I've mentioned about how many late shipments we've got over the last few months. 2 day shipping has become a straight lie at this point. We don't watch Amazon prime video at all.

  • I recently rescued a baby RES from falling into my crawl space access. Little guy was all dried up and barely moving. I've owned reptiles in the past and my wife loves turtles so we decided to keep it. A lot of research and learning was done to figure out what it needed and how the tank needs to be kept along with all of the chemical balances. Both of my children were made aware that they need to wash their hands before and after handling the turtle. There is a lot of tank maintenance weekly. We've had it for over 3 months and no one has gotten sick.

MOST reptiles carry salmonella which is why you should wash your hands before and after handling. It bothers me that they say turtles with shells smaller than 4" are worse. The only reason that they say that is because smaller turtles are cute and more likely to be picked up by children. A turtle under 4" is not more or less likely to give you salmonella than a larger turtle.

  • You do realize that streaming companies have been looking at ways to prevent people from subbing and canceling constantly. That won't be an option much longer. Just like the password sharing crackdown and price increases, they are constantly looking for ways to keep that revenue.

  • I work in IT and I've been against the cloud for over a decade and I always got looks like I was crazy. We still have vendors pushing us to buy into the cloud, I'll fight tooth and nail all the way. Unfortunately, a lot of vendors aren't giving much of a choice anymore by making their services cloud only. We'll have to start building custom applications soon to keep everything on-prem.
