Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?
  • I'm realizing that a few weeks ago I wanted a lot of people to flock to Lemmy and away from Reddit. At this point I just don't think about Reddit anymore and find myself hoping Lemmy doesn't get too popular because of everything that comes with that (trolls, meme posters, bots)

  • How do I stop seeing post from 2 or 3 days ago?
  • There's currently a bug with "hot" and "active" where old posts remain at the top. I don't remember the details but it's getting fixed in v.0.18 (which is already in release candidate 4).

There are two solutions until the fix is released:

    • get your server admin to reboot the server everyone in a while. This seems to temporarily refresh the content.
    • use "new" or "top day". That's what I've been doing.
  • OK Boomer Shooter: How indie games breathed new life into a dying genre
  • The article did address this:

The internet loves roasting “boomers,” the shorthand term for the Baby Boomer generation born in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Admittedly, most boomer shooter fans are likely Gen-Xers and Millennials, but they’re still co-opting the term in a sarcastic but positive way that conveys the old-school nature of this niche genre.

It all comes down to it rolling off your tongue better.

  • OK Boomer Shooter: How indie games breathed new life into a dying genre
  • Great article! All to say that if it wasn't for indie devs, genres like this one would have stayed dead. I'm glad they brought it back. If there's a market for it, they should make the game. AAA studios only want the highest ROI so they were always unlikely to take the risk on something like this.

  • Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?
  • Your second to last point really rings in for me. You'd think with all the posts and traffic on Lemmy that there would be ad clutter or push for other internal paid brands, but it's just so clean and only about the posts and comments.

  • Jellyfin, we are moving away from Reddit and we are pleased to announce our new forum!
  • Also a Plex lifetime user. I tried jellyfin not too long ago to see what the fuss was all about. I had heard that they handled her tonemapping better.

The interface is different but more or less just as good as Plex. It's definitely more for the person that likes to dive in the details of the config of their server. For example, you need to setup your own domain for external users to connect to. It's not done automatically like on Plex.

The focus on your content vs the "free" content Plex shoves in our face is nice I must admit.

Just a question of preference. In the end I stuck it out with Plex... For now.

  • Cities Skylines 2 just solved every road and traffic problem ever
  • I hope the traffic logic gets an improvement. I remember having a lot of weird behavior with lane changes where every car would decide to change lanes at on specific spot on the road and line up to get to that spot.

Looking forward to see what else they'll be improving on.

  • Far-Right Extremists Keep Targeting Canadian Schools and Residential Areas. It’s Getting Out Of Control.
  • Large, well-funded organizations

Never heard of these orgs but this sound like they're funded by foreign entities trying to destabilize our democracy. All theoretical of course.

Shouldn't the government prevent this kind of funding? Or at least investigate it? This seems unlikely that they would be funded locally.

  • How do you get a better front page on Lemmy without so much old stuff?
  • I remember reading that there is a bug with Hot and Active at the moment where older posts keep a high priority for too long. It's supposed to be addressed in the v.0.18 release in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, I use New or Top Daily. Not perfect but it gives fresher content.

  • Populating communities on new instance

I've spun up a new instance and understood that there would be no initial communities under All.

I know I needed to search for a community to get the federation to get started, but do I need to search for every community for the to appearing the list?

The servers been up for almost 24 hours and I still only have the 2 communities I searched for in the list.

EDIT: Found my answer. Seems like each new community needs to be searched.
