Australia's protester crackdown didn't start with Hannah Thomas — and it won't end with her
  • That's a pretty standard and accurate description of most protests, I don't think it's intended to hide anything. It's just highlighting the simple fact that there's no reason for police to use violence on a peaceful person. There's essentially no way this could be justified anyway, it's not like she was about to attack someone. That SMH article kinda points out the big thing, the protestors were talking to the police trying to understand exactly what was happening from a legal standpoint, and then the cops escalated for no apparent reason.

This happens a lot. It's really important to understand exactly what powers cops are exercising and if they're allowed to, because they lie constantly in order to manipulate and intimidate people. This whole thing is rotten with the smell of authoritarian crap. It's not illegal to protest, but our right to do so is rapidly being incriminated and things like this will only become more common as the police are praised for beating the communities they claim to protect.

  • Queensland public servants forbidden from including acknowledgments of country in email signatures, Labor says
  • Oh, I hadn't thought to include it in mine. Good idea. I'm tempted to add a free Palestine too, but I probably shouldn't stir the pot too much when I'm trying to not draw attention to myself lol

  • Question: Downloading music in 2025?
  • If you haven't already done it, Pat (the Bunny) put all his stuff on archive and he's far from the only one.

  • What free things online should everyone take advantage of?
  • Not everyone likes the way these images are built, but the liinuxserver.io containers are so easy to use. You can replace so many cloud services using these, I've replaced:

    • All streaming platforms
    • Google drive
    • Google photos
    • Every note app
    • The library (sorta, I just host an ebook server for manga that won't fit on my reader)
    • Grocery lists
    • Exercise tracking apps

Plus I've setup some awesome new stuff like a website for one of my collectives and a few things to automate server maintenance.

You need somewhere to host your services (I'm using an old PC) and a little linux experience, but it's absolutely worth giving it a crack. I might work in the industry but I learnt more making my little server than I ever did on the job.

  • How's your week been?
  • Way to go! I've just started working out again too and I absolutely share your pain. I've been doing strength training though, I always struggle to get outside to do cardio when it's this damn cold haha. Good on you for looking after your knees and best of luck when you start doing leg day, I know a lot of people hate it, but personally it's my favourite.

Either way, keep it up! I hope we both stick to our plans and make amazing progress.

  • How's your week been?
  • I went to court to appeal my conviction and fine, I was expecting a good behaviour bond but nope! Turns out judges don't like when cops lock you up for 7 hours when they only needed to get your name and address. So woo, clean record again!

I also got super lucky and a friend of mine was playing a gig at a small town on the way to court, so I got to spend Saturday hanging out with some Aussie folk punk artists at a really cool venue.

My solicitor continues to prove herself a great ally, in the middle of my hearing she started whispering to me about how she's been doing work with trans rescue, they look like a good group. They help people escape persecution for being trans, they have resources for getting out of the US too.

Overall a good weekend, there were still plenty of challenges but I think I managed everything okay.

  • Local Voltron - Last Place Comics
  • I was literally joking about "body horror voltron" with a friend yesterday

  • How many of you use Lemmy and ONLY use Lemmy vs Reddit?
  • I stopped using Reddit when I joined Lemmy, but I've still got a Facebook account because the family chat is in messenger, and I use Instagram because that's where a lot of important information about things like rallies and mutual aid are disseminated (it's a bonus that it's also where I find cool gigs too).

I've also got Tumblr and mastodon, but I don't use them much at all, I live here more than anywhere else.

  • Good horse girl books?
  • Oh wow, I wasn't expecting that! Sounds like fun

  • Good horse girl books?
  • I figured as much, but I thought OP might be looking to recreate the childhood experience.

  • Good horse girl books?
  • The saddle club is a book series iirc. I just remember the TV show being popular when I was a kid, but I've never been a horse person so I can't say if the books or show are worth it.

  • Do you find protest fun?
  • Sometimes it can be fun, I've had a fair bit of fun during some rallies by handing my megaphone to loads of different people, we had a counter protest back in April that turned into a dance party too.

I've also been to plenty of scary ones. I had one where I had to run away from violent cops and change into a different outfit behind dumpsters. Sometimes the adrenaline can be fun if it's a more spicy action, usually the nerves go away once you get started.

  • What's an unexpected skill you have?
  • Patch making, and I've no idea why people are surprised about it tbh. It's really easy if you've got access to a printer (or you can trace from a screen) and a pair of scissors.

That said I have a slightly unusual process where I design stencils in fusion 360 and then print them on my 3D printer, they're durable and reusable that way. I'm still working on improving the final print quality, but I've had some really good results like this gigantic Ash Bricky back patch that took me ~20 hours over three days.

    Disclaimer

I bought the actual shirt I swear, it just wasn't the right shape or size for a back patch. Also I never sell other people's designs like this.

  • Ice protests live streams - non mass media
  • The few times I've been around for the organising of live streams, we've either done it directly to our own socials and/or an independent journo might come and either stream or record some stuff, but I don't think I ever got their names when that's been organised ahead of time.

At one I attended, the organisers provided burner phones for people to livestream an action, I believe to their personal accounts? I never saw the footage of it though.

  • Tell me about when a stranger was kind to you
  • I met a guy called Big Al on a family camping trip and he was pretty cool. He was the first hippy I ever met, living out of a van and trailer, solar panels all over the roof and making some money selling bags made from men's ties.

I don't really remember what he did other than maybe teaching me a fishing knot, maybe feeding me and showing me some cool stuff. At the very least, it's a very positive memory and possibly part of why I love the off grid dream.

  • How's your week been?
  • My whole world still feels irreparably broken, but I'm doing a little better every day. I'll probably go back to work next week, although to be honest I could really do with another week or two so I can finish more stuff that'll keep my head above water, but I'll manage I think.

I'm back to working with my collectives already. I'm trying to get my FnB chapter properly organised for once, and I'm trying to set up a WordPress blog for my trans network but self hosting it is a bit annoying.

I started doing a year in pixels thing to track my recovery. I started it on the day I last had to go to hospital, I think I'm progressing well. If I'd started this earlier there'd probably be two weeks of solid red...

  • How's your week been?
  • Way to go!
I've been struggling with the same sort of problems for a while too, sometimes it's a big win to just get one thing done. Lately for me just making a meal has been a big challenge (I had popcorn for dinner last night). I wish I had any advice that wasn't keep trying and try not to get too stressed out 😅

  • How's your week been?
  • hugs I hope things get a little easier soon ❤️

  • How's your week been?
  • I gotta try electrolysis sometime, I've been doing IPL at home because laser was too expensive but I can't get rid of the last bit of facial hair -3-

  • Max Rule

This is Max, my brother's greyhound (hey bro if you're reading this). He was keeping me company today while I took some time to relax and recover from recent traumatic stuff, he's the goodest boy like that.

Not pictured are the two miniature poms who cuddled with me today as well.

    HRT and Mental Health

I was meant to record a segment for a radio program to discuss some of the unique implications that being trans can have for your mental health. We'd decided to talk a bit about how I'd ended up getting an ADHD diagnosis as a result of starting feminizing hormones, they'd made it significantly worse and I was struggling to keep up with daily life.

Now I've ended up having to put that recording off for a while because I was struggling with some pretty severe depression, but it seems like this is probably borderline personality disorder. I saw a few Reddit posts where some said they'd had noticed theirs get worse after starting hrt and I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced anything like this, or knows about research into it?

Could be any disorder or condition, it's all good to know about as there doesn't seem to be that much info out there beyond people's experiences, it could help others to hear yours. (I'll add mine to the comments)

I won't share any details on that program beyond what I get your consent for or anything reasonably vague such as "I spoke to x other people who've had similar experiences."

Trans Day of Visibility Rallies 2025 Australia

Rallies for Trans Day of Visibility will take place across Australia from March 30. With an election weeks away, now is the time for solidarity.

Trans Day of Visibility Rallies 2025 Australia - Zee Feed

This article is from before the actions happened, I'm sharing this one because it's well written and touches on the points we consider most important: intersectionality and solidarity. Also we forgot to plan a post action media release for my city and got absolutely no media attention after the fact oops (except for community radio ♥️♥️♥️3CR❤️❤️❤️).

It's worth noting that this approach was so overwhelmingly successful that the rally in my city ended up being several times larger than anything we'd anticipated, 3000+ attendees at the peak. If you're looking at organising a radical campaign like this, use your contacts and ask your allies to mobilise, it's incredibly powerful stuff and builds power for their movements as well.

The discussion on mainstream queer activism being inadequate and toxic is very important and worth understanding in detail. You can't build a lasting movement or obtain liberation by throwing minorities under the bus and capitulating to oppressive patriarchal norms that reinforce harmful stereotypes and gender roles.

We've experienced this first hand. The day after the rally, an NGO announced their own action appropriating the name we chose and on the same day as a rally for refugees. They silenced all critiques, spat in the face of what we stood for and even claimed they organised one of the rallies in another city. They also have history of silencing the voices and efforts of trans people (especially from other marginalised groups) while platforming the politicians who pass legislation to suppress and erase us. It's been absolutely awful to deal with, but you cannot be complicit in it.

    Bring your friends!

If you're able to make it to the State Library on the 31st, please come and show your support. There are a lot of awful things happening to trans people and it's time we demand protection, the right to gender affirming care and an end to pink washing.

The 31st is the trans day of visibility, but we are now very visible and without protection that visibility is violence. We are done asking to be seen, we now demand to be safe.

(Mods pls remove if not allowed, I checked the guidelines and couldn't find anything disallowing it)

    Request: BIFL USB-C Earbuds/DSP IEMs

I basically listen to music constantly, and when I'm on holiday or riding my bike I generally use USB-C earbuds. I've had way too many wireless buds break and I'm sick of them, but these aren't fairing much better tbh.

Problem is that the cables always eventually stop working, often from my phone being in my pocket while I'm walking or cycling. I've been able to partly extend their life by keeping my phone in the thigh pocket on my cargo pants but it often just falls over and bends the cable more sharply than my hip pocket.

I'm looking for either a pair of highly durable earbuds either USB-C or 3.5mm with a USB-C DAC recommendation, or even better a DSP cable that I could use with IEMs with a 0.78mm connector.

I'm also open to any other suggestions at all.

    Arrested for disobeying rule

Yep, I got arrested trying to block a coal ship in the world's largest coal port and I'm proud as fuck, give all your love to the protest organisers. I've talked about it a ton over in this thread (and a few others in similar communities). I was joined by a handful of other people, including a student doctor who is in this photo but hard to see, she's on my right in the shade. She's so damn brave and a huge inspiration.

This took place at the People's Blockade, an annual "protestival" organised by a group called Rising Tide.

I'm the (misgendered 😡) 27 year old in this article.

170 people then set a new record for the largest civil disobedience action in Australian history the following day, they're all incredibly brave people who have had enough.

We fought the government in court and won the right to protest against the fossil fuel corporations who are burning our children's futures. We also fight to secure the future jobs of the workers in these industries, demanding a 78% tax on current fossil fuel projects to help them in the transition to a renewable future.

It's been a long few days, I've just arrived home about half an hour ago. Goodnight.
