this meme was made using GIMP
  • Me too. Gimp is awesome. I can do everything I want and more really easily. I just don't get the hate. Photoshop is cancer, it's slower than Gimp and it's not even worth pirating. It hurts Adobe more if you use open source alternatives.

  • You can pirate media that uses that new blu ray drm by plugging a capture card into the overpriced compatible DVD player and recording the video. Also, it's a way to transfer saved content from a dvr as their hard drives are always encrypted (do those still exist). The video stream on all this stuff is encrypted with hdcp to prevent this but there exist hdcp strippers. It seems to still be possible to buy them even on Amazon. Stock up before they get banned. Frankly I'm surprised they aren't banned already.

  • Would you pet a cat for $800?

$800 to pet a cat. The cat likes being petted and his name is Jim.

HDMI forum rejects AMD's open source 4K@120Hz and 5K@240Hz HDMI driver
  • The only disadvantage of display port that I can think of is that it's harder to find capture devices (or at least Linux compatible ones) that have display port. Generally no one cares about that stuff though. I use capture cards because I sometimes do stuff involving other computers and it's 1000 times more convenient to have a vlc window floating around with the display output.

No one seems to have this use case besides me, I'm just glad that there exist capture cards fast enough to do playback in real-time and not a 5 second delay. I don't stream.

No 4K@120Hz and 5K@240Hz via HDMI 2.1 for Linux users with Radeon.

Damn now I have to boycott an entire video connector.

Wendy's now says it won't surge-price menu items
  • I did fast food for a long time and don't really see how lowering prices when it's not busy then increasing them during peak hours is going to do less harm than good. I think it would make more sense to charge a little less when they're busy and have lots of employees and can make food faster. Then charge the normal price when it's slow and they have less employees.

It's probably more about impressing investors as having bigger numbers in your sales report during peak hours looks good.

  • I was just joking kind of. I am a struggling computer engineering student always looking for ways to use my skills to earn a little extra income. What type of system compatibility would you need? Arduino compatible serial? Vintage AT motherboards? Some other thing like maybe a commander x16? If people really would be willing to buy homebrew graphics cards like that maybe I'll look into it.

  • /r/theoryofreddit post asking why reddit seems dead
  • It was too "easy" for regular users to get upvotes and too hard for bots to get upvotes probably. Certain comments and posts now have downvote caps of 0 points so depending on what agenda a comment supports, it may not be possible to downvote into negative numbers.

As a rule of thumb, anything you say is getting downvoted but if someone else posts the same thing, it gets highly upvoted. Reddit is cancer.

  • Huh, I thought you were supposed to use -sri. I hate dealing with the AUR, that stuff doesn't work half the time. I'm sure there are reasons for making it annoying like that but I haven't really put much thought into it before. I'd like to think making the AUR a pain in the ass makes things less likely to break, and hopefully that's not just because you're less likely to install AUR packages.

  • Nintendo is suing the creators of Switch emulator Yuzu
  • Yet another reason I never buy anything from Nintendo. Fuck those fucks. On average only like 2 Nintendo games per console generation are ever any good anyway. They should be held responsible for all the e-waste they generate.

  • Uuh I was planning on scamming people by making low quality anvils but this works too.

You can also make copies of Ben Eater's "world's worst video card", put it on a pcb with an isa slot and wait for goobers to buy them on ebay. As long as it can actually output video you don't have to accept returns.

  • Help me choose a keyboard

I am in the market for a new keyboard. I really want something that is backlit, has a volume control and has the full layout with numpad. If I can't find something with those 3 features I'll just keep fighting with my shitty half working one because it's not that bad and there not being a better option will just motivate me into finding some new way to fix it probably. I kind of don't care if it's membrane or not, as long as it's not expensive. In my experience membrane keyboards last longer anyway.

There's a few cheapo options on Amazon that look promising but beyond that they only come with 2 out of 3 of the features I need. That's why I came here for advice.

I have a g910 thats old and starting to get all kinds of key bounce issues. I've replaced most of the switches and it's still doing it so it's either a circuit board issue or a chip issue.

Also, it's fucking bullshit that there's not a backlit mod for the ibm model m.

I like women but I also like cock but I'm not otherwise attracted to the male body at all. Wtf is my sexual orientation? AITA?

I like women. I like the shape and curves of the female body. I like boobs, I like asses, I like pretty vaginas. I also appreciate and am aroused by a nice cock. I'm however not otherwise attracted to the male body. I like femboys as long as they have a feminine-like shape and curves, as many of them do.

    WTF is my sexual orientation?

    Absolutely. Fuck. Alcohol.

Drank 3 beers and 1 shot of whiskey last night like a law abiding citizen instead of smoking weed. Holy fucking shit hangovers are worse than I remember. Fuck everyone fighting to keep weed illegal. They're all subhuman trash.

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I'm helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because "Linux can't play games" despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones.

2 days later, no game has been played yet. We can't even get steam to start. I even installed Arch on a sata ssd I donated just to verify the pc parts actually work (took less than an hour). It took 1 and a half days to even get the Windows 11 installer to get past like the 3rd screen.

Fucking fuck. Dealing with all this fucking bullshit is far worse than not being able to play a few trashy anticheat pay 2 win games. The anti Linux circlejerk is real.

How do I get my Debian server to stop crashing?

I have this Debian server that won't stop crashing. It crashes once every 2 or 3 days. Everything's up to date, the cpu is good and prime 95 never finds any problems. The ram is good and I've run every ram test there is and never found anything wrong. I just can't get it to stop crashing and it's driving me insane.

I used to have an arduino connected to the motherboard's reset jumper and then set up a bash script as a systemctl service that sent a signal to the arduino every 10 seconds and if the arduino didn't receive a signal after 30 seconds it forces a reboot. This doesn't even automate the process of restarting after a crash because too often, the server will crash just lightly enough that everything except that autorestart bash script service stops working so it won't reboot. It does double amount the time the server works without manual intervention though which is better than nothing but not good enough.

Other than just randomly installing different distros until I find one that doesn't do this (reinstalling an os and then setting all the server stuff back up is very time consuming), what can I do to troubleshoot/solve/stop or otherwise do anything about these crashes?

How do I install the Nvidia driver for my 1080ti in Debian 12?

Seriously. Installing the nvidia-driver package doesn't work. I've tried all the suggestions I could find on an internet search and they didn't work. I can install it with apt install nvidia-driver, it gives me the "Nvidia x server settings" program but it doesn't have anything in it. I'm locked to 1 monitor and the only resolution I can choose is 1024x768. The only thing I haven't tried is installing the the Nvidia driver from their website but I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to do that because it will 100% guarentee the os will get borked if you ever do a major upgrade and the one time it happened to me, I couldn't fix it without a drive format and reinstall despite several days of trying everything except a drive format and reinstall. However if that's the only working modern way to install it, fine.

This is like my first time having to install Linux in forever. Linux doesnt bork itself as often as Windows so it's hard to get experience.
