  • Any reason for switching to Opera over say Firefox and alternatives? Opera is chromium, which makes them susceptible to manipulation from Google. I think open source / nonprofit projects are still worth supporting even if they originate in the US.

Zen browser is a solid recommendation for regular users, it has a beautiful layout and some new features that would make a browser change more palatable.

Solid recommendations on the other stuff, I should pass them along to people

  • I was unsure about the change back when 'Karma' counts were removed from Lemmy. I don't think that I have missed them ever, as a user, mod, or admin.

  • This is very helpful, thank you for sharing!

Do you have any recommendations for training / certifications? A friend asked me recently and I didn't know what to recommend

edit: Sorry I missed the section where you talked about that. Thank you :)

  • I hadn't considered that one before

Someone who bought a Tesla before, who is trying to sell it now, may have to sell it to someone who supports Musk. At a loss at that

Sell their houses to who Ben? FUCKING AQUAMAN!?

  • Users are concerned that this moderation tactic could be abused or just improperly implemented.

This is the key bit. It's good to try and make safer online spaces. But Reddit's automated moderation has been bad for a while, and this might get more users caught up in false positives

I've seen comments tagged as abusive regardless of the context:

    • someone quoting a news article
    • someone making a hyperbolic joke (especially in gen-Z subs)
    • actual abuse

For well moderated subs, the vast majority of those reports became false positives over time. For the mod queue, this didn't affect the end user since mods can dismiss the false positives. But automated 'scores' won't account for that.

We're going to see even more annoying algospeak like "unalive", only it's going to be in news quotes as well

  • Couldn't see how to add more

To link multiple images, you can either

    • link to an external gallery in the main post
    • place them in the post body with this format: ![](ImageLink)

You can do the same in comments. For example if I go

    ![](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9b/Birds_Illustrated_Canada_Goose.jpg/636px-Birds_Illustrated_Canada_Goose.jpg)

    It shows up like this

It's also best practice to add alt text in the square brackets:

![painting of a goose standing in front of some boats](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9b/Birds_Illustrated_Canada_Goose.jpg/636px-Birds_Illustrated_Canada_Goose.jpg)

Some apps and front ends will have a little image icon that can help you upload more images into the post / comment body

  • In line with this, thinking through how you'll deal with the bad outcome can help you get past them

    For example

Me organising an event and only 1 person turning up (this would have stopped me in the past)

    • being able to get to know that person better
    • not ordering the food until after the event starts
    • ending early, or having an alternative plan that works for smaller groups

Me failing a class and having to repeat it next year

    • planning what the schedule will look like, or how that would shift your course planning

It doesn't bounce around in your head as much afterwards, because you've "solved" the problem

  • Risky

    Jump
  • math requires it, the risk is just too high

  • Thank you for making a post! I'll pin it in the community :)

    Looking forward to it

  • I always found the "don't tell people you use Reddit" thing to be a bit weird. Some people used it, some people didn't, same as any other site

It sounds like that's not a thing anymore

  • Interestingly

The original reddit was closer to hackernews than the generic site it is now. Not only that but spez has admitted that the original traffic was artificial, by which I mean, the owners themselves were creating fake engagement through various means, such as scraping and cross-posting content from sites like digg via sockpuppets to appear that the site had way more traffic than it had.

  • Yup, and Reddit started in 2005 (which is 2 decades ago now) with its large migration in 2010. Lemmy only really got going in 2023, and it's growing

Misskey is a Mastodon style platform, that is popular in Japan and existed from a while back. They added activitypub support in 2018

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misskey

  • I usually don't check them unless I need to reference something, but I recommend the alternative UIs for looking through old messages. The default Lemmy UI makes it annoying to follow along in past conversations, while Photon for example has a chat layout
