  • In their defense, for someone who has never heard of Lemmy/the fediverse, it's reasonable for them to be cautious. So many other platforms are VC funded, do guerilla marketing, have hidden agendas, etc. It's especially bad on Reddit with all the AI astroturfing now.

I've seen a bit of that in the Canadian reddit comms, where new users are initially concerned that they're joining another american tech startup's platform. Once they learn how the network works, how the software is open source, and (specific to lemmy.ca) that the site is managed by a non-profit and the servers are in Vancouver, they're more excited about it :)

  • With the proxy websites, it's more of an alternative frontend where you still need an account on the platform.

    What might be happening is

    • your device or IP address is flagged from your previous attempts
    • they've connected it to your real name / shadow profile somehow

So if you really need to use it and there's no alternative, you could do one of

    • make the real account, ideally from a privacy friendly browser, and give the absolute minimum info you can. Name and email, no profile image, privacy settings to max
    • make an account on a new device / wifi network, and have it be believable for the kind of person joining Facebook for the first time. I haven't tried this myself but I've heard it mentioned before

Whether you made an account or not, you can keep an eye out for alternatives. Over here there are a few alternatives, and one of them (Karrot) has been growing in popularity

    https://betakit.com/south-koreas-neighbourhood-buy-and-sell-app-karrot-hits-one-million-canadian-users-builds-toronto-engineering-hub/

It might enshitify at some point, but it's been nice so far

  • Thanks :)

  • It looks like there are a number of reports on this post. If you could edit a tag into the title, such as [satire], that would probably make everyone happy

  • When an instance is defederated, that happens at the server level. That content doesn't get loaded onto your Lemmy instance to begin with, and so you wouldn't see anything. From memory the comment count would be lower on a post on your instance compared to the foreign one

  • That might be your language settings. Go into your main Lemmy settings and make sure that 'Undetermined' is selected

  • Did you happen to change the link? I don't notice the issue

It might also help to take screenshots of what you're seeing

  • Thundermail -- not to be confused with Mozilla's decades-old Thunderbird email client -- will be an email service similar to Gmail that can be used within Thunderbird and on the web. With Thundermail, you can use either a Thundermail email address or a custom domain. Also, this new 100% open-source email service will never use your email to train AI, flood your inbox with ads, or collect and sell your data. (So maybe it's not that similar to Gmail.) That's a big win for those who are concerned about privacy.

Huh interesting, Mozilla and Proton are having more and more overlap. More choice is a good thing?

  • Unfortunately I don't have a good version on hand, and the online translation service didn't make much sense when I pasted it in

I'll share if I find anything!

  • There's probably more we can do to improve our internal shipping networks, and maybe the simplified interprovincial trade stuff will help with that

As a temporary workaround, maybe you can see if there are people nearby who also need the item you are purchasing? Buying something in bulk and sharing it with others, could help somewhat

  • Maybe they meant "intentionally"

  • In addition to moderating, I think the biggest help would be to participate in the smaller communities. Regular posts and discussions go a long way

Just saw the new MapleMusic community, subscribed :)

  • Since lemmy.ca is federated, you can see content from everywhere. However you also have a lot of control over your feed, and you can either block communities you don't like or (my preference) primarily use the 'subscribed' feed and only subscribe to the content you want to see.

This guide page might help: https://fedecan.ca/en/guide/lemmy/for-users/detailed-overview

If you look on !canada@lemmy.ca, we maintain a pinned post with a list of Canadian communities to subscribe to

  • This might be the wrong community for this?

  • For sure!

For now I can say that all your songs got points, and I think one of yours was in 4th place :)
