Another reason to leave Reddit: I forgot how hostile it can be
  • Are you me? I felt the exact same way. Then if it hurts, you have to hide those feelings too because people will make fun of you for being "too sensitive." "It's just the internet, get over it." Rejection sensitivity is real and it sucks. I quit commenting on Reddit because of that. I never understood why people think the internet isn't a real place, so it's okay to be cruel. We may be somewhat anonymous here, but we're still people with feelings. If you're mentally in a bad place, little things can really feel big. They add up.

I recently got on meds for my ADHD, too. It's helping me a lot, I hope you're having good luck with yours too. :)

  • Another reason to leave Reddit: I forgot how hostile it can be
  • Also if anyone reads a comment from me and I sound like an asshole, please let me know! It's almost certainly not intended, especially anywhere on Beehaw.

This kind of energy is why I like it here on Lemmy, and especially Beehaw. Being nice should be the default. On Reddit, I got downvoted so many times just for asking a question in good faith. Then if getting downvoted bothers you, you get mocked further. "It's just the internet, grow up" kind of stuff. Downvoting may not be a big deal to some people, but some don't understand that it can have an effect on your mental health to feel rejected so much. You don't know what other people are going through, having a heavily downvoted comment could even be a last straw for someone. Getting constantly insulted and downvoted can feel like the whole world is against you if you're in a bad place. And a lot of people are in a bad place, especially since 2020. A lot of people are lonely and only have the internet to talk to, and if the internet rejects you too? It hurts. It's not that hard to be nice, especially to people who mean well. I hope Lemmy stays like this as much as possible.

I would also like to be notified if I sound like an asshole about anything. It sounds dorky, but spreading even small moments of positivity really does have an effect on our world. We can see the damage that rage bait has done to people. Little things add up and they do have an effect on all of us. Let's try to spread kindness as much as possible.

  • Lemmy v0.18.0 Release
  • That explains why I can still see Beehaw and post comments through Jerboa, I was already logged in. I'm getting a few little bugs though, but that's to be expected with a new platform so I'm not too worried about it. It's kinda fun watching a new platform get started.

  • Lemmy v0.18.0 Release
  • I'm getting this on Jerboa after their latest update today, I'm guessing it's temporary while we're upgrading but just wanted to point it out in case it was helpful in some way.

  • Infinity going subscription-only!
  • I have auto update turned off for apps, so I didn't get the last update for Infinity and I can still use it to see Reddit, for now. Once it dies I'm out though. I can't imagine they will be able to get enough subscriptions to support the app, so I'm not really sure what the goal is here.

The Infinity listing in the Play store links to this post that has a bit more info (warning: Reddit link) https://www.reddit.com/r/Infinity_For_Reddit/comments/147bhsg/the_future_of_infinity/

Even the people subbed to r/Infinity_For_Reddit are saying they won't buy a subscription. Wouldn't Infinity be racking up a huge bill from Reddit once the API change goes into effect? There's no way subscriptions will cover that so I don't understand why they're doing this.

  • A whistleblower raised safety concerns about OceanGate’s submersible in 2018. Then he was fired.
  • It feels like the Titanic is an irony magnet. It's like some cosmic force is still really salty that they called it an "unsinkable ship."

For example, some of the passengers on this missing submarine:

    • The founder of the submarine company who complained about safety regulations, now lost and trapped in his unsafe vessel.
    • The Guinness World Record holder for longest time spent traversing the deepest part of the ocean in a single dive will now likely be at the bottom of the ocean forever.
    • The director of the company who owns the salvage rights to the Titanic. The company that has brought many artifacts to the surface, now likely leaves its director on the ocean floor with the wreckage.

  • I'm gonna be honest with you chief, I can't take seriously a "protest" that keeps paying the same people it's protesting against
  • Yeah, I noticed a lot of people on posts like this saying they were giving out all of the awards they've saved up over time before deleting their Reddit accounts. I don't think this is all brain dead people paying the company they're boycotting. They're using the awards they have left to bring attention to the protest. I had a bunch of awards to give out from when someone randomly gave me gold but I never gave Reddit any money.

  • My /r/piracy troll post just hit reddit frontpage!
  • I agree with all of this. I definitely think at least some of them are astroturfing. The mods from r/adviceanimals got kicked and ever since then, they mostly post memes that say things like "the official app isn't so bad, you guys!" We all know u/spez isn't above editing comments for petty reasons and since he got caught, I'm sure he's more careful about not getting caught editing things to suit him now. I wonder if the voting system is rigged, too, at least in some subs.

  • My /r/piracy troll post just hit reddit frontpage!
  • I see that the trolls I was talking about are managing to find their way to Lemmy. They never have any actual insightful things to say, it's just reducing your arguments to the most simplified version and repeating them back in a childish condescending way. It's almost like...that's not all the protest is about? Not sure if these are just kids trying to be edgy, or if they're working for Reddit, or if they're just u/spez being petty. I try to be an empathetic person, but I have a really hard time understanding thinking it's fun to belittle people for caring about things. It's such a waste of energy. If you need attention, learn a skill and impress people with it, I assure you it's a much more fulfilling way to get people to notice you. I hope these people can get the emotional support they need someday.

  • My /r/piracy troll post just hit reddit frontpage!
  • The bootlicking on that post (in a PIRACY sub nonetheless) is wild. Lots of "you don't understand, Reddit is a COMPANY! 😭" I've peeked in on Reddit a bit and I've been seeing those kinds of "won't somebody think of the shaaaareholdersss and adminss" comments on a few posts related to the protest. Things like this insightful little nugget:

"Seems all the reddit hate is based solely on reddit doing something similar to twitter, and I'm supposed to be upset cause "Elon man bad"? Tons of APIs cost money to use... build your own platform that freely allows everyone to scrape all "your" content, lead by example please..."

I wonder how many of those are Reddit employees and bots? They can't all be u/spez alts, can they?

Oh and this is fun too, did you know that we're all liTeRaLlY extremists over here?

"Lemmy is very far-left. They are literally extremists, I'll not be part of that shit."

Guess Reddit is going to be taken over by alt-right trolls too.

Edit: Still figuring out how the formatting works over here.

  • soliciting a new round of community suggestions
  • I would like this too, I think it would be nice to have some art communities that are just for artists to help each other improve skills and some for showing off finished art to everybody. Unless I just haven't found it, I haven't seen a whole lot of art on Lemmy yet.

  • soliciting a new round of community suggestions
  • It does, but asexual people only make up about 1.66% of sexual minorities, so they may get drowned out in a combined community. Iit might be nice for them to have their own space.

I would also like to put in a vote for demisexuality, but since that's an even smaller slice it would be pretty niche at this stage.

  • It feels like we’re on the brink of something
  • That sounds really hopeful. Where and when did the events covered in the book take place? Also, what was the name of the book?

  • Parts of Reddit are staying dark. Our search results may suffer for it.
  • I figured out yesterday that if you go to the Google cached version, you can still see old posts. If I try it on mobile, the cached option isn't there, but on my PC I can click the (...) next to the search result, and click the cached option. Trying to figure out how to do that with mobile.

I fully support the blackout and I am trying to keep my Reddit traffic to a minimum, but I was trying to figure out a technical problem yesterday and it was a huge pain to find anything useful. Way too much SEO crap to wade through.

  • [LIVE THREAD] Donald Trump's arraignment in Miami; his supporters expected to protest outside of courthouse
  • Oh good, that explains it then. I'm so used to being suspicious that everyone is a bot lol

  • [LIVE THREAD] Donald Trump's arraignment in Miami; his supporters expected to protest outside of courthouse
  • I'm new to Lemmy like most of us are, and so far that comment is the first one I've seen that feels like a malfunctioning bot. Can someone with more tech knowledge than me explain if we are going to have a bot problem on Lemmy like we did on Reddit?

  • These are my favorite planters. What's yours?
  • These are so cute! I made a bulbasaur planter and put a little cactus in it. I am terrible with plants and can't get it to root though lol

  • Sad
  • And the puns. My god the puns.

I just wanted more info about what's going on in a video, and now I have to wade through hundreds of low effort puns. And most of them the exact same dumb joke repeated over and over.

  • current lemmy status
  • Oof, I can see why some of those instances are blocked, though. Since I'm on Beehaw, I checked their block list and...wow. Scrolled through each one for a few minutes and now I'm hoping I'm not on some kind FBI list for it. A few highlights from my research expedition:

    • A meme featuring various characters (MLP, Vaporeon, Peter Griffin, etc) unironically mourning Ted Kaczynski
    • NSFL gore
    • People calling for the execution of cops who stopped rioters on Jan 6
    • SO. MUCH. LOLICON.
    • "Hahaha look at this WOKE LIB 🤣🤣🤣"
    • QANON. QANON EVERYWHERE.

I was only on each one for a minute or so. I don't think I'm missing out on anything except maybe being put on some kind of list.
