What’s a place from your childhood that doesn’t exist anymore?
  • There used to be a very janky waterslides on a hilltop that closed down. The place was notorious for giving kids scrapes and bruises and other injuries for years, my parents were surprised it hadn't closed earlier.

  • Hold on, I am not here to spread misinformation! Like I said before, I genuinely had no idea about the trend of Tiananmen square posts since I don't browse r/all. As for why I haven't retitled it yet...didn't know you could!

Also the 3 week old twitter post, I got from a discord friend.

  • Why is every Searx instance down when I try to use it?
  • This is why I don't use searxng as my daily driver! I'm too lazy to self host and they're always down.

  • NOTE: Please read top comment!
  • Had no idea! Thanks for informing me. I will keep this post up because I think it is an interesting discussion to have

  • Best places to get human reviews/recommendations outside of reddit?
  • Doing that! But still would like an alternative for reddit.

  • Why do some people have a extreme hate for Furries?
  • I'm not a furry, I'm chill with furries, but I do wish there was more variety in the art style. A lot of it is human anime-esque with furry features or too mascot-y. I think I would be a furry if more of them were drawn like disney, looney toon, and other western cartoons. But not much is.

So even though I like cartoon animals, I can only consider myself maybe 5% furry at best.

  • Best places to get human reviews/recommendations outside of reddit?

Often times when duckduckgoing (is that the right term for that) advice for products, I use the !ddgr key to directly search reddit for advice. But in a post-blackout world, I need to do this a lot less. So I want to know what the best places are to get reviews and advice for products that are human and not top 10 listicals.

The official app is hot garbage
  • Safari allows you to install adblockers, there's multiple options too. Most vpns these days also come with adblock even if your browser doesn't allow it.

  • The official app is hot garbage
  • I used Narwhal most of the years I used reddit, it also had ads like the official app, but the difference is it ran so much smoother for many years! Main reason why I switched off it was slow development was causing it to become a bit buggy, not the ads.

  • What KDE or QT apps do you love that aren't well known?
  • It sadly doesn't have a linux version cause it's not foss. But according to the about firealpaca window, it primarily is coded in QT.

  • If Reddit phased out 3rd party apps gradually and tactfully, do you think this would have gone the way it has? The Reddit app is terrible, but is it any worse than navigating and learning the fedivers
  • I was a bit sad about the API changes, but I kept official app around for uploading video/image posts since those hosted on reddit started to get more views than imgur/other host website ones. So I wouldn't have minded switching apps full time. What got me angry was Spez's mistreatment of the Apollo dev. I am absolutely not a fan of the Apollo app, but no one should be treated that way. Plus the realization that many websites that use reddit API that I use frequently will go away as well (such as saving videos, pushshift reddit search, and spotlistr). That's what got me initially away from reddit.

  • You know what I don't miss? Awards.
  • It was fine when there was three (some comments here say back when there was one...or two which I guess depends on joining point haha). But I personally found the balance between gold, silver, and platinum the sweet spot. Gold for really good posts, silver for posts that, while not as good as gold, were still pretty helpful/decent, platinum being the best of the three, where the post was so extraordinary it deserved more than gold.

When they added more rewards it removed the whole flow. All of them were the most worthless, cringworthy memes, and a lot of them were given out for literally free. To make things worse, they were often misused as well, there were a ton of posts marked with the cringe "wholesome" award that were very not wholesome because the users awarding didn't have any of the other free awards and couldn't pay.

Getting reddit gold beforehand was already having a perception of being "cringe" but I think the addition of the many "meme awards" only made things worse. I think it would have been better if a system was implemented where awards could have been voted upon to posts that truly deserved it or were considered "historic" in some way.

The best way to protest against reddit is simply to not interact with Reddit
  • Yeah this is the message I intend. I still check reddit occassionally for the random question (and also to work on my userstyle since it's inspired by the colorscheme). However, I don't stay in too long, don't upvote, comment, or create posts, since that adds traffic to the site.

  • The best way to protest against reddit is simply to not interact with Reddit

I see a lot of posts about how they uploaded anti-spez stuff onto reddit, or participated in the nsfw spams/john oliver spams. While I get wanting to let it all out, this ultimately keeps up engagement on reddit rather than bringing it down.

The best way to make sure things go your way? Vote with your wallet, or in this case your voice. Don't speak on reddit. Devote more time helping out the alternatives grow and flourish. And as much as it is a meme, touching some grass can help your mental fortitude.

If you absolutely 100% need to interact with reddit, I suggest installing a redirector addon (such as privacy redirect or... redirector) that can link to a teddit or libreddit instance. Or archiving it with wayback/archive.is/ghostarchive.

Lemmy.world is now the biggest Lemmy instance!
  • Congrats on the growth .world!

  • Queens of the Stone Age - "Emotion Sickness"
  • New album is fantastic! Their best stuff in a long time.

  • Why Kbin insead Lemmy?
  • TIL I can block domains!

  • Why Kbin insead Lemmy?
  • Mainly better UI, less questionable dev, and better support with mastodon if I chose to browse mastodon.

  • Introducing Narwhalbin: the old reddit colorscheme for Kbin!
kbin.social Introducing Narwhalbin, the old reddit colorscheme for kbin! - Kbin Userstyles and Userscripts - kbin.social

Made mostly for fun, I highly suggest pairing with the [kbin enhancement script](https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/468612-kbin-enhancement-script) and [kbin slim](https://userstyles.world/style/10437/kbin-slim) for max immersion....

Introducing Narwhalbin, the old reddit colorscheme for kbin! - Kbin Userstyles and Userscripts - kbin.social

Figured to crosspost this here too, since I think it could help reddit migrators get comfy (or for those who prefer the colorscheme I suppose).

I am working on an userstyle to bring the "old reddit" colorscheme to Kbin. This userstyle also has some optional quality of life features to make the layout more similar to old reddit as well. I suggest to check out the original post for more details if you're interested!

Also if anyone can figure out how to make the Kbin text on the top not white, that would help a lot! I will make sure to credit you.

Are there any addons like RES for Kbin yet?
  • kbin enhancement script is the closest thing right now I think, but /m/kbinStyles has a lot that are worth looking into

  • It’s official — LCD TVs won’t see any further development.
  • Wow it's insane how fast technology goes. Feels like yesterday the first LCDs were releasing, but apparently not!

  • Why are conversations on Reddit often so hostile and toxic now days?
  • Nah I disagree, perhaps cause I am a zoomer but all the zoomers I know and communicated with online have been way more civil and understanding than previous generations. They even apologize to each other when a conversation goes way out of hand. Toxicity can go across every generation, but the millennial internet was/is a lot worse.

  • What KDE or QT apps do you love that aren't well known?
  • Firealpaca is how I discovered kde and I don't see it mentioned too often, so I will take my chances and say that. However it's the only kde program I know of that isn't FOSS. But I typically prefer it's simplicity over the bells and whistles of gimp and sometimes krita.

    Random aesthetics I saved #3

Seafoamsadness - the underappreciated greenish-grey aesthetic from the 2000s [Kbin]

    What is it?

I love looking at aesthetics, but my favorite one is one from the 2000s. Greenish-greys with blurry filters. It was used incredibly often, yet there's very little documentation on it! I hope with this community to change that, or at least give the aesthetic more appreciation.

Why is it named like that?

Modification of a suggestion from my r/tipofmytongue post about the aesthetic. The person suggested Seafoam Shame and Verdant Melancholy, so I combined the two.

    Some examples

Rihanna - Don't stop the music Minutepass commercial Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Eminem - Stan (most extreme green example) Twilight

Anyone else a little disappointed how the blackout is going?

I mean don't get me wrong, its cool a lot of subs have and still are participating in the blackout, but I think it wouldve been better to link a new home for the subreddits participating somewhere in the private message. Show spez, hey if you dont change, we aren't going to use your site (or use it less).

When introducing members to kbin/lemmy don't mention the fediverse!

I introduced kbin to someone today who asked what the fediverse was. I answered for them of course, but it made me realize that the concept is still technobabble for most people. The average joe probably doesn't care or notice that server A is really talking to server B. Just have them find out on their own and if a mass migration does need to happen from A to B, just make a standard announcement.

TLDR; most people's reactions to the word fediverse.
