Beethoven's 9th Symphony
  • Let’s say you put like 1000 violinists all in a big, long row. Then, have the first violinist play a note, then the second plays the very same note, then the third, and so on. Let’s say you could also time it so that at the very moment the sound wave from one violinist hits the next is when that one plays the note. Brrrrrrump! All the way across. Let’s also say you could time it perfectly so that the waves don’t cancel each other out. What would happen?

  • Sovcit seems puzzled.
  • Similar to what happened in the 2008 housing bubble, companies have been giving car loans to people they know probably can’t afford it because they know they’ll probably get the car back again pretty soon, and the person will still be on the hook for the portion they owe for the time they had the car. Plus interest.

  • Anon misses some signals
  • Very similar situation, but in Physics, LOL. My self esteem was so low that I just assumed she was being lazy and taking advantage of me. I KNEW she was smart enough, but she kept asking me for help over and over. I don’t just give people answers, I work through it with them to teach them. Haha, looking back on it, she was probably just enjoying that interaction, meanwhile, I’m stewing inside about how this girl could be so ignorant as to accidentally keep sending me flirty signals and messing with me so she didn’t have to do her work. Funny thing is, I did like her. It just didn’t compute in my teenager brain that a girl would want to talk to me for any reason beyond getting some quiz answers out of me.

  • How do you recover from seeing something awful on the Internet?
  • This is a good question, though. Seeing horrible things on the internet can affect you. Anywhere from getting wigged out to full out trauma is possible.

Personally, if I come across something like that, it’s a good cue to take a quick break from screens. Go for a walk. Eat if you’re hungry. Drink if you’re thirsty. Spend quality time with your pets or plants if you have any. Pay attention to how you’re feeling and do what might be necessary to make you feel good and healthy. In that state, it’s easier to bring yourself back to the here and now. Look around you and appreciate your life. Seeing how real and raw those things are can give a person perspective, but if you overexpose yourself or ruminate on them, it can fuck you up a little bit. Even if you’re “desensitized.”

If you’re lucky enough where things like that aren’t a regular part of your life (as it is for most of us here), use it as a lesson in not just taking care of yourself, but also of others and society as a whole. There are fucked up people in the world, yes. Sometimes the bad guys win and terrible or disturbing things happen, yes. It’s best to maintain pride in knowing you’re not trying to contribute to that problem, in whatever little way you can.

And if you can’t seem to shake it, get some therapy. Not just for that one thing, but, it may be likely you’re slipping into rumination or worldviews that make it difficult to handle depression. Therapy is great, for real. Shop around and find a therapist you like.

  • Imagine being a Trump supporter just because that’s who your team picked and you don’t want to vote for a democrat so you’re just going with it. Then you look around the proverbial room and see these people all around you. If you’re one of those people and frequently feel like maybe you’re the smartest one in the room, perhaps you should start considering whether you’re standing in the right room. I mean, you should’ve considered this a while ago, but still, this would be a good opportunity. There might still be a few out there, who knows. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • Henry Rollins, untitled prose
  • All I know is that he’s somebody that a lot of people might characterize as a very intense, crazy motherfucker. The man needed an outlet and found it in Black Flag. I don’t know a whole lot about him as a person aside from the occasional thing like this that pops up, and I think I saw a documentary that featured him not too long ago. Knowing that he struggled with being different and then finding his life’s work in music is my main takeaway.

  • Hospitals don't care about COVID.
  • I’ve been in and out of a fair number of hospitals lately. Some people are jaded or tired of it, yes, but I’ve also noticed a big difference between hospital systems. Overall management and enforcement of policies helps keep those things in check. Some hospitals are definitely better at this than others.

  • Gladys orcas sink another sailboat in the Strait of Gibraltar: ‘They don’t go like a battering ram’
  • Orcas are smart. This article suggests it’s not intentional and maybe out of curiosity? Whatever. They figured out how to sink boats without ramming full speed. How much you wanna bet they’re pillaging the sunken ships for food and drinks and stuff. Special little treats that sailboats happen to carry. Or maybe they get pissed off when one of them dumps their lavatory waste or something.
